Uma peça submete-se a esforço de torção, quando atua um torque em uma das suas extremidades e um contra torque na extremidade oposta ou quando sua extremidade oposta encontra-se engastada, ou seja, presa de forma estática.

O torque atuante em um eixo é definido através do produto entre a intensidade da carga aplicada e a distância entre o ponto de aplicação da carga e o centro da secção transversal (pólo).
