Keeping Your Kids Safe on Social Networking Sites

When you combine the immediacy and tell-all atmosphere of socialnetworking with the not-fullydeveloped impulse control of teensand pre-teens, kids are bound to over-share, resulting in someawkward moments at best and predation at worst. Socialnetworking sites encourage and enable people to exchangeinformation about themselves, share pictures and videos, and useblogs and private messaging to communicate with friends, otherswho share interests, and sometimes even the world-at-large. Andthat's why it's important to be aware of the possible pitfalls thatcome with networking online.

Some social networking sites attract pre-teens even kids asyoung as 5 or 6. These younger-focused sites don't allow the samekinds of communication that teens and adults have, but there arestill things that parents can do to help young kids socialize safelyonline. In fact, when it comes to young kids, the law provides some

protections and gives parents some control over the type ofinformation that children can disclose online.

For sites directed to children under age 13, and for generalaudience sites that know they're dealing with kids younger than 13,there's the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Itrequires these sites to get parental consent before they collect, maintain, or use kids' information. COPPA also allows parents toreview their child's online profiles and blog pages.

Parents sometimes can feel outpaced by their tech-savvy kids. However social networking isn't really about technology, it's justanother platform for communication. And parents have a lot theycan teach kids in that arena to help them stay safer as theysocialize online.

Death of Film: Last Roll of Kodachrome Processed

What do you know about Dwaynes Photo Service of Parsons,Kansas? It is the place where the very last roll of the Kodachromewas processed.

Kodachrome, the slide-film that inspired songs, was discontinuedby Kodak last year at 74 years of age. The color emulsion was avictim of its own weird processing requirements, which didnt usethe usual E6 chemistry designed for transparency film, andtherefore wasnt worth supporting in the age of digital.

The last roll was shot by National Geographic photographer SteveMcCurry, who shot the 36 exposures in New York (actually, thelast three shots were exposed in Parsons before dropping off thefilm at Dwaynes). The pictures will be part of a NationalGeographic piece in the near future.

McCurrys film may have been the official last roll off the production line, but Dwaynes will still process any Kodachromethat you might have until December 10th this year. And then it willshut down, forever. People may still shoot analog, but with the

death of Kodachrome comes the spiritual death of film.Disponivel em: Acessado em 10 denovembro de 2010.
