Já dizia Camões: “O amor é fogo que arde sem se ver”.

Nesta edição da The Avenue, dedicamos várias páginas ao melhor dos sentimentos, o amor, ou não estivessemos quase a cele-brar o Dia de São Valentim.

Na altura em que eu andava a estudar, al-guns dos meus colegas “arranjavam” uma namorada ou um namorado próximo do dia 14 de Fevereiro, só para terem alguém com quem partilhar este dia e para receberem um presente em troca.

Nunca consegui perceber estas relações fu-gazes porque para mim o amor não surge ao virar da esquina. O amor é o resultado de muita convivência, de muito conhecimento de nós e do outro, de muita partilha (de bons e maus momentos) e principalmente de muitos sentimentos, alguns tão confusos que nem eu os consigo expressar. Basta senti-los para sabermos o que é o amor.

Se tem uma cara-metade e quer que este dia seja memorável, temos algumas suges-tões de locais e presentes. Desde Lisboa, passando por Sintra, ou até mesmo algumas das cidades mais românticas do mundo, o número 5 da The Avenue não se esquece de evidenciar o sentimento que todos querem sentir mas que só alguns conseguem nutrir.

In this edition of The Avenue, we dedicated several pages to the best of feelings, love, or we were not about to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

At the time I was studying, some of my colleagues had “arranged” a girlfriend or a boyfriend near to the day of February 14th, only to have someone to share this day and to receive a gift in return.

I never could understand these fleeting relationships because for me love does not come around the corner. Love is the result of companionship, a lot of knowledge of us and each other, sharing a lot of (good and bad times) and especially of many feelings, some of them are so confused that I can express them. We just have to feel them to know what love is.

If you have a loved one and you want to make this day a memorable one, we have some suggestions for places and gifts. From Lisbon, through Sintra, or even some of the most romantic cities in the world, the number 5 of The Avenue does not forget to show the feeling that everyone wants to feel but only some people can nurture.

O Mosteiro dos Jerónimos situa-se em Be-lém, Lisboa, perto do Rio Tejo. Constitui o ponto mais alto da arquitectura manuelina e o mais notável conjunto monástico do sé-culo XVI em Portugal.

Este mosteiro é um testemunho monu-mental da riqueza dos Descobrimentos por-tugueses e os seus elementos decorativos são repletos de símbolos da arte da nave-gação e de esculturas de plantas e animais exóticos.

O monumento foi encomendado pelo rei D. Manuel I, pouco depois de Vasco da Gama ter regressado da sua viagem à Índia e foi financiado em grande parte pelos lucros do comércio de especiarias.

O seu nome deriva do facto de ter sido en-tregue à Ordem de São Jerónimo, nele esta-belecida até 1834. Após 1834, com a expulsão das Ordens Religiosas, o templo dos Jeróni-mos foi destinado à Igreja Paroquial da Fre-guesia de Santa Maria de Belém.

Dentro do Mosteiro estão os túmulos do rei D. Manuel I e da sua mulher D. Maria, D. João III e da sua mulher D. Catarina, D. Sebastião e D. Henrique e ainda os de Vasco da Gama, de Luís Vaz de Camões, de Alexandre Her-culano e de Fernando Pessoa.

O monumento é considerado património mundial pela UNESCO, e em 7 de Julho de 2007 foi eleito como uma das sete maravilhas de Portugal.

The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is located in Belém, Lisbon, near the Tagus River. Constitute the highest point of Manueline architecture and the most notable monastic group of the sixteenth century, in Portugal.

This monastery is a monumental testimony of the richness of the Portuguese discoveries and its decoration elements are full of symbols of the art of navigation and sculptures of exotic plants and animals.

The monument was commissioned by D. Manuel I, after Vasco da Gama returned from his trip to India and was funded largely by the profits of the spices trade.

Its name derives from the fact that it was delivered to the Order of São Jerónimo, there established until 1834. After 1834, with the expulsion of religious orders, the temple was intended to parochial church from parish of Santa Maria de Belém.

Inside the monastery, are the tombs of kings D. Manuel I and his wife D. Maria, D. João III and his wife Catarina, D. Sebastião, D. Henrique and still Vasco da Gama, Luís Vaz de Camões, Alexandre Herculano and Fernando Pessoa.

The monument is considered World Heritage by UNESCO, and on July 7th 2007, it was elected as one of the seven wonders of Portugal.

O Centro Cultural de Belém localiza-se na Praça do Império, em Belém.

O edifício de linhas modernas e simples, onde a pedra atinge o seu máximo valor e impressividade, foi concebido pelos arqui-tectos Manuel Salgado e Vittorio Gregotti. As obras foram iniciadas em Setembro de 1988 e finalizadas em Setembro de 1993.

Numa primeira fase foi concebido para aco-lher a sede da presidência portuguesa da Comunidade Europeia e posteriormente para desenvolver actividade cultural.

A sua localização visava assinalar o ponto de partida dos descobrimentos marítimos, que deram “novos mundos ao mundo”, abrindo portas a outras culturas, e alargando todo o espaço cultural e artístico a nível mundial.

Dentro do Centro Cultural de Belém podem ser encontrados gabinetes técnicos, salas de qualidade, auditórios, lojas, restauração, galerias de exposição, jardins, actividades pedagógicas e museus.

O Centro alberga, desde Junho de 2007, o Museu Colecção Berardo.

The Centro Cultural de Belém is located in Praça do Império, in Belém.

The building with modern and simple lines, where the stone reaches its maximum value and impressiveness, was designed by the architect Manuel Salgado and Vittorio Gregotti. The works began in September 1988 and were finalized in September 1993.

Initially was designed to accommodate the headquarters of the Portuguese presidency of the European Community and later to develop cultural activity.

Its location was intended to mark the starting point of maritime discoveries, which gave “new worlds to the world,” opening doors to other cultures, and extending all the cultural and artistic space worldwide.

Within the Centro Cultural de Belém you can find technical offices, quality rooms, auditoriums, shops, restaurants, exhibition galleries, gardens, museums and educational activities.

The Centre lodges since June 2007, the Museu Colecção Berardo.

O Padrão dos Descobrimentos situa-se em Belém, junto ao Rio Tejo. O monumento foi construído para homenagear os elementos envolvidos no processo dos Descobrimen-tos portugueses.

Inicialmente, o monumento foi encomen-dado pelo regime de António Oliveira Salazar aos arquitectos Cottinelli Telmo e Leopoldo de Almeida, para a Exposição do Mundo Por-tuguês (1940), e desmontado posteriormen-te em 1958.

O monumento actual é uma réplica do an-terior e foi construído em betão com escul-turas em pedras de lioz.

Foi inaugurado em 1960, como forma de co-

memorar os quinhentos anos da morte do Infante D. Henrique, o Navegador.

O Padrão dos Descobrimentos tem a forma de uma caravela estilizada, com o escudo de Portugal nos lados e a espada da Casa Real de Avis sobre a entrada.

D. Henrique, o Navegador, ergue-se à proa, com uma caravela nas mãos. Em duas filas descendentes, de cada lado do monumen-to, estão as estátuas de heróis portugueses ligados aos Descobrimentos.

Na face ocidental encontram-se o poeta Ca-mões, com um exemplar de “Os Lusíadas”, o pintor Nuno Gonçalves com uma paleta, bem como famosos navegadores, cartógrafos e reis.

The Padrão dos Descobrimentos is located in Belém, near the Tagus River.The monument was built to honor the elements involved in the process of the Portuguese Discoveries.

Initially, the monument was commissioned by the regime of António Oliveira Salazar to architects Cottinelli Telmo and Leopoldo de Almeida, for the Portuguese World Exhibition (1940), and subsequently it was dismantled in 1958.

The current monument is a replica of the former one and it was built in concrete with limestone sculptures.

It was inaugurated in 1960, as a way to celebrate the five hundredth anniversary

of the death of Infante D. Henrique, the Navigator.

The Padrão dos Descobrimentos has a stylized caravel shape, with the shield of Portugal on the sides and the sword of the Casa Real de Avis, on the entry.

D. Henrique, the Navigator, stands on the bow, with a ship in the hands. In two descendants rows, on each side of the monument, are the statues of Portuguese heroes linked to the Discoveries.

On the west face are the poet Camões, with an exemplary of “Os Lusíadas”, the painter Nuno Gonçalves with a palette, as well as famous navigators, cartographers and kings.

A Torre de Belém localiza-se na margem norte do rio Tejo. Foi construída estrategi-camente, entre 1514 e 1520, para defesa da barra de Lisboa. Com o passar do tempo, e com a construção de novas fortalezas, mais modernas e mais eficazes, a Torre de Belém foi perdendo a sua função de defesa.

Durante os séculos que se seguiram, de-sempenhou funções de controle aduanei-ro, de telégrafo e até de farol. Inicialmente, estava cercada por águas em todo o seu redor, mas aos poucos foi sendo envolvida pela praia de Belém, que existia ali, até se incorporar hoje à terra firme.

O monumento é todo rodeado por deco-

rações do Brasão de armas de Portugal, incluindo inscrições de cruzes da Ordem de Cristo nas janelas de baluarte. Estas carac-terísticas remetem principalmente à arqui-tetura típica de uma época em que o país era uma potência global (início da Idade Mo-derna).

A Torre de Belém é um referente cultural, um símbolo da especificidade do país que passa pelo diálogo privilegiado com outras culturas e civilizações.

Em 1983 foi classificada como Património Mundial pela UNESCO e foi eleita como uma das Sete Maravilhas de Portugal a 7 de Julho de 2007.

The Torre de Belém is located on the north bank of the Tagus River. It was strategically built, between 1514 and 1520, to protect the bar of Lisbon. Over the time and with the construction of new forts, more modern and more effective, the Torre de Belém lost its defensive function.

During the followed centuries, it performed roles of customs officer control, telegraph and even headlight. At first it was surrounded by water on all around, but gradually it was being enveloped by the Belém beach, which existed there, until incorporate today at dry land.

The monument is all surrounded by decora-

tions from the Portugal Coat of arms, including entries from crosses of the Order of Christ in the bastion windows. These characteristics remit mainly to the typical architecture of a time when the country was a global power (beginning of the modern age).

The Torre de Belém is a cultural reference, a symbol of the specificity of the country which passing through privileged dialogue with other cultures and civilizations.

In 1983, the tower was classified as World Heritage by UNESCO and was elected as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal at July 7th, 2007.

LLisboa pode não ser Paris ou Veneza mas também tem os seus encantos para ofere-cer a quem a visita. No dia de São Valentim, 14 de Fevereiro, vai perder-se de encantos, com a sua cara-metade, pelas ruas da cida-de das sete colinas. Ou não fosse Lisboa um dos destinos mais promissores de 2012.

Comecem por tomar o pequeno-almoço na baixa pombalina, para tomar o pulso à cida-de. As esplanadas e cafés, bem localizados e com vistas para as melhores praças lisbo-etas, são o local ideal para comer a primeira refeição do dia.

Depois, subam até ao Castelo de São Jorge e vislumbrem a vista maravilhosa de um dos melhores miradouros da cidade. As próxi-mas paragens são nos extremos da cidade. Na Praça da Figueira, podem apanhar o auto-carro panorâmico, que disponibiliza dois tra-jectos distintos: o Tagus Tour e o Olisipo Tour.

O primeiro percurso é dedicado à Lisboa

dos finais do século XIX e início do século XX, com passagem pelos monumentos de Belém. O outro circuito passa pelos princi-pais museus da cidade e percorre o Parque das Nações, local onde a arquitectura con-temporânea é privilegiada.

On Valentine’s Day, February 14th, you will be lost in charm, with your better half, by the streets of the city of seven hills. Or Lisbon was not one of the most promising destinations in 2012.

You can start by taking breakfast in downtown, to take the pulse of the city. The terraces and coffee shops, well located and with the best views of Lisbon’s squares are the ideal place to eat the first meal of the day.

Then, go up to the Castelo de São Jorge, enjoy the wonderful view of one of the best viewpoints in the city.

The next stops are at the extremes of the city. In the Praça da Figueira, you can take a panoramic bus, which offers two distinct tracks: the Tagus Tour and the Olisipo Tour.

The first course is dedicated to Lisbon from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, passing by the monuments of Belém. The other circuit passes through the city’s main museums and tours the Parque das Nações, place where the contemporary architecture is privileged.

If you prefer to know the inner city, the best solution is to enter the red electric, number 28, in the Praça do Comércio, to appreciate the old, traditional and typical Lisbon.

After you spending the day “tread” the corners of the city, you can enjoy a nice dinner in a house of Fado or in any restaurant.

SINTRA

Sintra é, sem dúvida, um dos paraísos de Portugal. Em 1995, foi declarada pelo UNES-CO, Património Mundial, no âmbito da cate-goria Paisagem Cultural.

O seu nome deriva da palavra cynthia, sím-bolo da lua na mitologia céltica. Os roma-nos chamavam-lhe Mons Lunae, o Monte de Lua, e aí eram feitos sacrifícios em sua honra. Toda esta carga mística em seu re-dor mantém-se até hoje.

Sintra é anualmente visitada por muitas pessoas atraídas pelas belezas naturais, pelos monumentos e pela história da vila.

A The Avenue deixa algumas sugestões para um passeio romântico, por Sintra, com a sua cara-metade.

Uma das maiores atracções turísticas da Serra de Sintra é o Palácio Nacional da Pena, localizado na histórica vila de Sintra e inseri-do no Parque da Pena. O Palácio representa uma das melhores expressões do Roman-tismo arquitectónico do século XIX no mun-do.

O Palácio e o Parque foram idealizados e concretizados como um todo. Do Palácio, o visitante avista o Parque da Pena. Este par-

que tem percursos e passeios lindíssimos, com inúmeras construções de jardins lá existentes.

Também o Palácio de Monserrate, inseri-do no Parque de Monserrate e situado na Freguesia de São Martinho, é famoso pelos seus jardins, onde se podem observar, mais de três mil espécies exóticas.

Para um passeio romântico, a paragem no Palácio Nacional de Sintra é quase obrigató-ria. Com características de arquitetura me-dieval, gótica, manuelina, renascentista e romântica, o Palácio torna-se alvo de muitos olhares curiosos. A sua construção iniciou-se no século XV e foi um dos Palácios reais portugueses.

E se existe romantismo é, sem dúvida, na Quinta da Regaleira. O famoso Palácio da Regaleira está rodeado de luxuriantes jar-dins, lagos, grutas e construções enigmáti-cas, lugares estes que ocultam significados alquímicos, como os evocados pela Maço-naria, Templários e Rosa-Cruz.

europeu e fica situado no extremo final da Serra de Sintra. O local é visitável mas não até ao extremo.

Para um fim-de-semana a dois, a The Ave-nue sugere-lhe alguns estabelecimentos de hospedagem onde poderá usufruir da tran-quilidade e serenidade que a Serra de Sintra tem para lhe oferecer.

A Casa da Pinheira, proporciona uma vista surpreende desde o Vale da Carregueira até à Serra de Sintra e, por isso, torna-se o sítio ideal para desfrutar duma tranquilidade única e inesquecível. Os quartos estão decorados com a colecção de arte, mobília e objectos pessoais de Olavo D’Eça Leal, uma referência no mundo das Artes do século passado.

Também situado na Serra de Sintra, o Cha-let Relógio encontra-se a oitocentos metros do centro histórico, a caminho do Palácio Nacional da Pena e do Castelo dos Mouros, numa zona bastante tranquila. Para quem quer conhecer a histórica e misteriosa vila de Sintra, o Bliss A Part, localizado em frente à estação dos comboios de Sintra, onde se inicia a rota dos transportes turísticos, torna-se o alojamento ideal. O charme da deco-ração e o mobiliário confortável garantem uma estadia encantadora.

Para quem procura um sítio, onde a praia não fique longe, o Solar do Magoito, situado na aldeia com o mesmo nome, fica a um quilómetro e meio da praia e a dez do Centro Histórico de Sintra. Está rodeado por um bos-que e uma mata de pinheiro mediterrâneo.

Mas nem tudo são paisagens. Sintra tam-bém está repleta de sabores únicos e incon-fundíveis. A The Avenue dá-lhe a conhecer algumas das especialidades gastronómicas de Sintra, que o deixarão, a si e à sua cara-metade, de água na boca.

Na Doçaria tradicional, os Travesseiros de Sintra são um dos mais afamados doces da região. São feitos de massa folhada, re-cheados com doce de ovos, com amêndoa e polvilhados de açúcar. Os travesseiros de Sintra são vendidos em quase todas as pastelarias da região, mas principalmente numa das mais afamadas pastelarias da vila velha, A Piriquita.

A Piriquita é um dos ex-libris de Sintra, tendo um importante papel na gastronomia desta região, apresentando por isso altos padrões de qualidade, o que lhe é exigido por se situar num dos locais mais turísticos de Portugal. E não menos famosas, são as Queijadas de Sintra, conhecidas em todo o mundo.

Segundo os arquivos da Torre do Tombo, as primeiras referências às famosas Queijadas de Sintra remontam ao século XIII, reinado de D. Sancho II. Nessa altura, e segundo es-tes arquivos, as queijadas eram uma forma de pagamento de foros.

Outra das especialidades são os Fofos de Belas, confeccionados, desde 1850, na já famosa Fábrica dos Fofos de Belas que foi criada há quatro gerações. São pequenos pães-de-ló, recheados de creme e polvilha-dos com açúcar, feitos de ovos, farinha e leite (para o creme interior).

E por fim, mas não menos saborosos, são os Agualvas. Estes doces apresentam uma forma triangular e a canela é o in-grediente essencial. Dizem os entendidos que “se não forem em triângulo, não são Agualvas”.

Antigamente os Agualvas eram confeccio-nados por uma senhora que, entretanto, de-sapareceu e que os punha à venda numa pastelaria. Com ela, desapareceram estes formidáveis bolos. Há quase dois anos, uma pastelaria da zona, a Pastelaria “Mina dos Amigos”, no Cacém, iniciou o fabrico e venda destes doces, todas as sextas-feiras, a partir das 11 horas da manhã.

SIMPLE MINDS

The Simple Minds are returning to Portugal, on February 14th.The 5x5 live tour, which the British band will bring to Portugal, consists in the interpretation of five songs from each of its first five albums.

The Coliseu de Lisboa will be the stage of a concert with more than two and half hours, where the themes from the albums “Life in a Day”, “Real to Real Cacophony”, “Empires and Dance”, “Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Calling” e “New Gold Dream” will not be forgotten.

In the words of the lead singer, Jim Kerr, quoted by the concert promoter Everything is New: “This is the alignment that many of the Simple Minds fans have begged us to play and, finally, they will have a unique opportunity to see it.”

The five albums were released during the prolific period of Simple Minds, between 1979 and 1982, and had a huge cultural impact, since the birth of New Wave in the late 70s, through the revolution of dance music in the 80s and 90s, the music of the Manic Street Preachers, until the latest album from the Horrors, “Skying”.

The band, which reached its greatest popularity in the mid-1980s until the early 1990s, adopted the name of Simple Minds from the verse of a David Bowie song, “The Jean Genie”, “…so simple-minded, he can’t drive his module”.

A banda, que atingiu a sua maior populari-dade em meados da década de 1980 até ao início da década de 1990, adoptou o nome de Simple Minds, a partir do verso de uma can-ção de David Bowie, “The Jean Genie”, “...so simple-minded, he can’t drive his module”.

Os Simple Minds foram influenciados por uma diversidade de estilos musicais ao longo da sua carreira, a que o público foi-se adaptando, mas foi com êxitos como “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”, que a banda fez his-tória.

Comece pelas Portas do Sol, uma das en-tradas de Alfama - de onde pode admirar o Tejo e os telhados de Alfama. Corra pela es-cadaria abaixo, junto à muralha fernandina, na direcção da igreja de S. Miguel. Aqui vai encontrar muitas desculpas para parar.

Chegado a São Miguel, vire à esquerda e faça toda a Rua de São Miguel tendo a torre da Igreja de Santo Estêvão ao fundo como guia. Ao chegar ao final da rua não suba à esquerda, repare antes num estreito beco mesmo em frente e descaído para o lado direito. Aventure-se por ali acima.

A meio encontrará um grafitti que dá o mote - não dizemos para já o que é, estragar-se-ia a surpresa. Procure a igreja que lhe dá som-bra e aprecie a vista do Tejo que ela oferece. De costas para a Igreja siga à esquerda até encontrar um pequeno parque infantil, des-ça a rua do Vigário que corresponde à mais alta em relação ao jardim e esteja atento à sua esquerda. Está no Beco dos Paus.

Suba as escadas até ao topo e usufrua do largo. Abra a garrafa de vinho verde antes que aqueça, brinde ao que bem entender e ouça o que lhe segreda Alfama.

In every passionate move, there is an act of bravery. For this Valentine’s Day, dare to be brave. Fall in love in Alfama.

Fear nothing: the neighborhood will show you the way. Remember only to bring a bottle of Portuguese green wine and two glasses.

Begin at Portas do Sol, one of Alfama’s entrances – where you can admire the river and all the little house’s roofs. Run down the stairway that goes along the ancient city wall, heading towards S. Miguel’s church. Here you’ll find a whole lot of reasons to stop.

When you get to the church, turn left and travel along Rua de S. Miguel, having the steeple of Santo Estêvão’s church as a background guide. When you get to a

crossing, don’t go left. Notice instead a narrow alley in front of you, slightly to the right. Venture to go up those stairs.

Half way up, you’ll find a graffiti that sets the motto – this will remain a secret, so that we don’t ruin your surprise. Look for the church that casts a shadow over you and enjoy the wonderful view with a sparkling Tagus river as the landscape’s main character. With the church on your back, go left until you find a small children’s playground. Here you should go to the street that frames the playground on the top. From this street there is a small staircase that heads to Beco dos Paus.

Climb it and enjoy the nice and small square. Open the bottle of wine before it gets warm, toast to whatever feels right at that moment and listen to what Alfama is whispering.
