En Marina Greenwich afrontamos esta primavera con energías renovadas y muchas ganas de seguir mejorando. Por ello, manteniendo el compromiso de ofrecer el mejor servicio a nuestros usuarios, durante el pasado invierno

hemos llevado a cabo un proceso de renovación de nuestras instalaciones. Hemos realizado una fuerte inversión destinada a la sustitución de tres pantala-nes, al cambio del 50% de las torretas y a la moder-nización de la luminaria del puerto apostando por los leds, de acuerdo con una mayor eficiencia ener-gética sin descuidar la estética de nuestra marina.

Sinceramente esperamos que este año sea muy bueno en todos los sentidos. El turismo sigue cre-ciendo en toda España y nosotros no somos una excepción. Así que en nombre de todos los que for-mamos Marina Greenwich os damos una calurosa bienvenida y esperamos que disfrutéis de todas las maravillas de este rinconcito alteano. Como su buena gastronomía mediterránea, de la que se-guro será buen estandarte el nuevo Restaurante Club Náutico, uno de los locales con más solera del puerto que inicia una nueva etapa gestionada por la marina en colaboración con el Grupo Collados, una empresa con larga experiencia en gastronomía, servicios y eventos de alta gama. ¡Salud!

At Marina Greenwich this year we will be confronting the spring with renewed energies and the desire to continue improving. For this, main-taining our commitment to offer the best service possible to our consum-

ers, last winter we undertook a process of reno-vation to our installations. We have made a large investment destined to the substitution of three pontoons and 50% of the power pedestals have been changed together with the modernization of the illumination of the port where we have opted for leds so as to achieve greater energy efficiency without neglecting the aesthetics of our marina.

We sincerely hope that this year will be a very good one in every way. Tourism continues to grow throughout Spain and we are no exception. So on behalf of all of us at Marina Greenwich we would like to give you a very warm welcome and hope that you will enjoy all the marvels of this little cor-ner in Altea, as well as its wonderful Mediterrane-an cuisine, of which we are sure the standard will continue with the new Club Nautico Restaurant, one of the most traditional locals in the port that begins a new era managed by the marina in collab-oration with the Grupo Collados, a company with a long-standing experience in gastronomy, services and up market events. Las características de este pedacito de la Costa

Blanca son tan apreciadas que para muchos se

ha convertido en un auténtico Sangri-La. En la

novela de Horizontes perdidos este término hacía

referencia a una tierra de felicidad permanente,

en paz y aislada del mundo exterior, y aunque

afortunadamente aquí sí estamos conectados con el mun-

do exterior, representa un destino identificado como un

La isla griega de Corfú nos hace soñar des-piertos con un paraíso tranquilo dueño de un pasado en el que la historia se diluye con buenas dosis de mitología. Según ésta, Kérkyra, su nombre en griego, proviene de una bella ninfa de la que Poseidón se ena-moró, raptándola y llevándosela a una isla

que hasta entonces no tenía nombre. Y también es en esta tierra donde Ulises naufragó durante su viaje de regreso a Ítaca, y donde Jasón y los argonautas vivieron parte de sus aventuras...

Su ubicación le regala un agradable clima mediterráneo y sus dimensiones (una longitud de 80 kilómetros y un pro-medio de anchura de 18) son perfectas para conocerla a fondo durante unas vacaciones. En ella uno se encuentra con un litoral en el que conviven abruptos acantilados con una abundante vegetación, bahías de postal con aguas de color turquesa e interesantes localidades como Gastouri, Kontoli, Komeno y por supuesto Corfú capital, la mayor y más bella ciudad medieval de Grecia. Una ciudad que

nació como antigua fortaleza de origen bizantino levanta-da para proteger los intereses de la república de Venecia contra el imperio otomano. Su casco antiguo ofrece un laberinto de callejuelas donde conviven palacetes, ele-gantes edificios neoclásicos, viejos cafés y negocios, con iglesias, museos y bonitas plazas, como la de Spianada y su famoso Listón, una zona porticada hecha a imagen de la parisina rue de Rivoli. Desborda historia –ha estado bajo dominio veneciano, francés y británico– y encanto, por lo que no es de extrañar que la Unesco la haya incluido en su listado de urbes Patrimonio de la Humanidad.

Corfú no sólo ha encandilado a dioses y héroes griegos, también ha seducido a notables personajes, como Goethe, Oscar Wilde o, algo más recientemente, a los hermanos Durrell que pasaron aquí cinco años de su infancia o ju-ventud, según a que hermano nos refiramos. Fue un perio-do que les marcó muy positivamente en sus vidas y sobre el que el pequeño de ellos, el escritor y naturalista Gerald escribiría años después en la famosa trilogía “Mi familia y otros animales”, “Bichos y demás parientes” y “El jardín de los dioses”. También es en Corfú donde la reina Sofía pasó parte de su infancia, concretamente en el palacio de Mon Repos, que primero fue residencia del gobernador inglés y después de la familia real griega durante sus estancias

veraniegas. Hoy se puede visitar pues ha sido reconver-tida en museo. No es el único personaje de la realeza con memorias de la isla, pues también la emperatriz Sissi debió guardar buenos recuerdos de sus años pasados en el pa-lacio de Achillion (Aquiles), en Gastouri. Ambos palacios se encuentran a pocos kilómetros al sur de Corfú y muy cerca de otro lugar de imperdible visita: el insólito islote de Pontikonisi y el monasterio de Panayía Vlacherna.

En la costa norte de la isla se encuentran otros lugares de interés, como Sidari con su espectacular Canal d´Amour, un rincón del litoral caracterizado por las peculiares for-mas que han adoptado sus rocas areniscas debido a la ero-sión del viento y el mar. Y descendiendo por su vertiente oeste, desde la localidad de Peroulades se descubren más fabulosas calitas y aguardan el monasterio de Paleokas-tritsa, Angelokastro –un fuerte bizantino del siglo XII–, y localidades como el pueblecillo de Pélekas. Y, por supues-to, más paradisíacas playas como la de Mirtiotissa, muy apreciada por Lawrence Durrell o la de Ermones, donde supuestamente apareció Ulises. Sin duda, un buen lugar para naufragar.

The most popular of the seven Ionian Islands is located off the northern coast of Greece. It is an enchanting place laden with history and beautiful scenery that has captivated its own and strangers from the times of Ulysses. Corfu

The Greek island of Corfu lets us day-dream with a peaceful paradise, owner of a past in which its history is diluted with good doses of mythology. According to the myth, Kerkyra, her name in Greek, comes from a beautiful nymph who Po-seidon fell in love with, abducting her and

taking her to the hitherto unnamed island. It is also in this land where Ulysses was shipwrecked during his journey back to Ithaca, and where Jason and the Argonauts lived part of their adventures...

Its location has been blessed with a pleasant Mediterrane-an climate and the dimensions (a length of 80 kilometers with an average width of 18) are perfect to explore it dur-ing a holiday. On her one can find a coastline where steep cliffs coexist with abundant vegetation, picture postcard bays with turquoise waters and interesting places like Gastouri, Kontoli, Komeno and of course Corfu capital, the largest and most beautiful medieval town of Greece. A city that originated as an ancient fortress of Byzantine origin erected to protect the interests of the Republic of

Venice against the Ottoman Empire. Its old town is a maze of narrow streets paved with cobblestones where palaces intertwine with elegant neoclassical buildings, old coffee shops and businesses with churches, museums and pretty squares, like the famous Spianada and its famous Liston, an arcaded area made in the image of the Parisian rue de Rivoli. Overflowing with history –it has been under Vene-tian, French and British rule– and was pleased, which is not so surprising when the Unesco included it in its list of World Heritage cities.

Corfu has not only bewildered Greek gods and heroes, but has also seduced well known personalities, such as Goethe, Oscar Wilde or, more recently, the Durrell broth-ers who passed five years of their childhood and youth, depending on which brother we refer to. It was a period in their lives that marked them very positively and it was about that, that the smallest of them, the writer and nat-uralist Gerald wrote years later the famous trilogy "My Family and Other Animals", "Birds, Beasts and Relatives" and "The Garden of the Gods.” It is also in Corfu where Queen Sophia spent part of her childhood, concretely in the palace of Mon Repos, which was the first residence of the British governor and after of the Greek royal family during their summer holidays. Today it can be visited as

it’s been converted into a museum. But the queen is not the only sovereignty with memories of the island; also the Empress Sissi must have treasured good memories of her years passed in the Achilleion palace (Achilles), in Gas-touri. Both palaces are to be found just a few kilometers south of Corfu and are very near to another place which is a must-visit: the incredible Pontikonisi Island and the Vlacherena monastery.

On the north coast there are other places of interest, such as Sidari with its spectacular Canal d'Amour, a niche on the coastline characterized for its peculiar forms that its sedimentary rocks have adopted due to the erosion by the wind and sea. And descending down her west slope, from the locality of Peroulades we can discover more fab-ulous coves and awaiting treasures such as the monastery of Paleokastritsa and Angelokastro –a Byzantine castle of the XII century–, and places like the small village of Péle-kas. And, of course, the most idyllic beaches like the Mirti-otissa, highly regarded by Lawrence Durrell or the one at Ermones, where supposedly Ulysses appeared. Without a doubt, a good place to be shipwrecked.

Entrevistamos a Carolina hace tres primaveras, cuando lideraba el partido político de Ciudadanos Independientes por Altea (CIPAL) y era la edil de urbanismo de dicha localidad. Hoy sigue siendo conce-jala (hasta mayo), pero sus miras apuntan mucho más lejos, pues es la candidata de Ciudadanos (C´s) a la Presidencia de la Generalitat Valenciana en las elecciones autonómicas del próximo 24 de mayo.

nes para utilizarlas como agencias de colocación pasó. Si a estas alturas el PP y el PSOE, tal y como parece, no lo han entendido, van mal. O hacen las reformas para regenerar el sistema, o la ciudadanía nos dará el poder para hacerlas no-sotros, no hay otra salida.

¿Cuáles son los principales cambios que necesita la Co-munidad Valenciana?Lo más urgente es una batería de medidas para impedir que vuelva a reproducirse la corrupción (listas abiertas, li-mitación de mandatos, prohibir donaciones de empresas a partidos...), eliminar duplicidades y burocracia (diputaciones provinciales fuera, fusionar ayuntamientos...). Asimismo es necesario dinamizar la economía apoyando a pymes y au-tónomos y cambiar el modelo productivo de la Comunidad para que sus ingresos no dependan únicamente del turismo. Para eso habrá que apostar de una manera decidida por la innovación, la rehabilitación, la eficiencia energética y la agricultura ecológica.

Más allá de las siglas, tu corazón siempre ha sido ver-de, ¿qué le aportas a Ciudadanos como ecologista con-vencida?Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente señalaba: “La naturaleza es la propia esencia del hombre, y su destrucción, implicaría nuestra propia ruina”. Creo que muchos se empeñan en presentar ecología y desarrollo como dos conceptos incompatibles. Yo, en cambio, no solo creo que se deben conjugar desarro-llo y naturaleza, sino que contravenir esta última, como de-cía Félix, es un suicidio económico.

Cuando hablas de ecologismo pragmático, ¿a qué te re-fieres?El ecologismo pragmático es no pedir imposibles sino mar-car tendencias que sean asumibles por la ciudadanía y que permitan conjugar desarrollo y ecología. Por ejemplo, no se trata de dejar de usar energía y volver a las velas, se trata de usarla de fuentes renovables.

Como despedida, haznos una promesa electoral…y re-cuerda que la próxima primavera te esperamos para hacer balance…Si las encuestas se confirman y los valencianos nos dan la oportunidad de llegar a las instituciones, no nos an-daremos con chiquitas. No nos interesan los puestos ni calentar el sillón, solo queremos hacer las reformas estructurales que necesita nuestra Comunidad. Eso les prometo, trabajar más y hablar menos que los demás, ante todo, efectividad.

Desde 2014 (con las elecciones al Parlamento Europeo) militas junto a Ciudadanos, ¿cómo surge ese idilio con la formación de Albert Rivera?Les sigo la pista como movimiento ciudadano desde que se crearon allá por el 2006 porque me parecieron una alterna-tiva interesante al bipartidismo, y me uní a ellos cuando de-cidieron salir de Cataluña y dar el salto a la política nacional. Conocí a Albert Rivera personalmente presentando mi libro No importa de dónde vienes, sino a dónde vas y consideré –y hoy lo sigo pensando– que valía la pena apoyarles.

Ahora afrontas un gran reto, ¿cómo llevas el salto de la política más local a la autonómica?Es un desafío personal y profesional de primera magnitud pero en el fondo, con independencia de la dimensión geo-gráfica en la que me encuentre, seguiré trabajando por las mismas ideas y el mismo proyecto. No dejaré de intentar cambiar la manera de hacer política, de buscar un urbanis-mo sostenible reorientando al sector hacia la rehabilitación, de reconvertir al sector agrario al ecológico, de apostar por una gestión eficiente que ahorre en gastos superfluos y se concentre en satisfacer las necesidades básicas de las per-sonas en sanidad y educación… En definitiva, trabajar por el bien común, eso es política útil.

Defiendes una tercera vía reformista que se plantea como alternativa al bipartidismo y al populismo, ¿de ver-dad hay hueco para todos? ¿Estamos asistiendo a una nueva era política?Por supuesto, estamos asistiendo a una segunda transición. Frente al inmovilismo de los dos grandes partidos, que por su interés partidista se niegan a hacer las reformas que reclama la ciudadanía, se presentan dos opciones para el cambio. Una de corte revolucionario que aspira a derribar el sistema, y otra, Ciudadanos, que representa el cambio sensato, el cambio desde las instituciones y mediante el consenso.

¿Cuál es tu diagnóstico sobre la salud política y social del país?Creo que esta crisis no solo ha sido económica, ha provo-cado una verdadera catarsis en la opinión pública, que por fin ha entendido que la política “o la haces” “o te la hacen”. De ahí la necesidad que ha sentido la gente de empoderar-se a través de formaciones políticas que provienen, como nosotros, de plataformas ciudadanas. El tiempo de la vieja política, de los partidos que funcionan como clanes, como estructuras de poder destinados a parasitar las institucio-

We interviewed her over three springs ago, when she was leading the political party of the Independant Ciudadanos for Altea (CIPAL) and was the councilor for town planning. Today she is still a councilor but her sights are aiming a lot further, as she is the candidate of Ciudadanos (the Citizens Party also known as C´s) for the Presidency of the Valencian Government in the next autonomous elections on May 24th.

You defend a third reformist path as an alternative to bipartisanship and populism, is there really room for everyone? Are we witnessing a new political era?Of course, we are witnessing a second Spanish transition. Faced with the immobility of the two major parties, which for their partisan interest refuse to make the reforms that the people are demanding, there are two options for the change. One is a clean revolutionary cut that aims to overthrow the system, and the other, Ciudadanos, that represents a sensible change, the change from the institutions and by means of consensus.

What is your diagnosis of the political and social health of the country?I think that this crisis has not just been economic, it has caused a real catharsis in the public opinion, which has fi-nally understood that in politics "or you do it" "or they do it for you". Hence the needs that the people have felt to gain power through political formations that have come through citizen platforms like us. The times of old politics, of the poli-tical parties that function like clans, like structures of power destined to parasitize the institutions to use them as em-ployment agencies has finished. Since 2014 (with the elections for the European Par-liament) you are an active member with Ciudadanos, how has this idyll with the formation of Albert Rivera come about? I’ve been following their tracks as a citizen’s movement since they started back in 2006 because I thought that it was an interesting alternative to bipartisanship, and I joined them when they decided to leave Catalonia and take the jump to national politics. I met Albert Rivera personally when I was presenting my book It does not matter where you come from, but where you are going and I thought –and I still do– that supporting them has been worthwhile.

Now you face a big challenge, how are you taking the jump from local politics to the regional ones?It’s a personal and professional challenge of the first magni-tude but basically, irrespectively of the geographical dimen-sion where I am, I will continue working for the same ideas and the same project, and I will certainly try to change the way of doing politics, seeking sustainable town planning by reorienting the sector towards rehabilitation, reconverting the agricultural sector to ecological, promoting efficient managing to save on unnecessary expenses and focusing on satisfying the basic needs of the people in public health and education... In short, work for the common good, that’s useful politics.

PSOE, as it seems, haven’t understood, then something’s wrong. Or they make the reforms to regenerate the system, or the people will give us the power to do them ourselves, there’s no other solution.

What are the major changes that the Valencian Commu-nity needs?The most urgent is a series of measures to prevent that corruption doesn’t repeat again (open lists, limitations of terms of office, prohibit company donations to the politi-cal parties…), eliminate duplicity and bureaucracy (no more county councils, merge local governments...). It is also ne-cessary to boost the economy by supporting the small and medium businesses and the self-employed and change the production model of the Community so that their incomes do not depend solely on tourism. For that it will be neces-sary to invest in a determined way for innovation, rehabili-tation, energy efficiency and organic farming.

Beyond political parties, your heart has always been green, so what are you contributing to Ciudadanos as a convinced ecologist?Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente a famous TV naturalist stated:

"Nature is the very essence of man, and his destruction would imply our own ruin." I think that many insist on presenting ecology and development as two incompatible concepts. I instead believe that not only should we combine develop-ment and nature, but contravene the latter, as Félix said, it is an economic suicide.

When you talk about pragmatic environmentalism, what do you mean?Pragmatic environmentalism is not asking for the impos-sible but to set trends that are acceptable for the people and that permits combining development and ecology. For example, it is not about stopping to use energy and return back to candles, but use the renewable sources.

As a farewell, give us an electoral promise... and keep in mind that next spring we will be waiting for your evaluation…If the polls are right and the Valencians give us the oppor-tunity to get to the institutions, we will not beat about the bush. We’re not interested in positions neither to outstay our welcome, we just want to make the structural reforms that our Community needs. That I promise, to work more and to talk less than the others, above all, effectiveness.

Alo largo de la línea de costa próxima a Marina Greenwich existen innumerables puntos que resultan óptimos para descu-brir la riqueza de nuestros fondos marinos. Los amantes del buceo descubrirán rinco-nes de fácil acceso en los que aguarda una fauna y una flora muy variada y colorida. Y

por supuesto, no hace falta ser un experto en inmersiones para descubrir dicha belleza submarina. Unas buenas gafas de bucear y unas aletas pueden ser más que suficientes para acercarse y enamorarse de gran parte de estos paisajes.

Las aguas de Altea forman parte del área protegida del Par-que Marítimo Terrestre de la Sierra Helada y no muy lejos, en Calpe, encontramos otro lugar protegido, el peñón de Ifach y sus aguas. Esto nos garantiza amplias zonas en las que las que es muy fácil avistar gran cantidad de especies de peces, pues su pesca está controlada.

ALTEAEl cabo de Toix y toda la pared del Mascarat, que es la prolongación al mar de la sierra de Bernia, es uno de los lugares más prolíficos para el buceo, pues acumu-la hasta siete puntos de gran interés con nombres tan sugerentes como las fuentes, el jardín de Neptuno, el rincón de Ricardo, la punta de la luz, el oso, la punta de Toix y, ya en el lado que mira a Calpe, la cala. Al inicio del acantilado hay una serie de fuentes que brotan a esca-sa profundidad proporcionando nutrientes a los peces, por lo que es una zona llena de vida. En los fondos de la pared se suceden grietas y cuevas junto a fondos areno-sos y rocosos, praderas de posidonia y afloramientos de coral, lo que constituye un entorno privilegiado para las especies que encuentran aquí un ecosistema muy rico. Se pueden ver langostas, congrios, meros, corvinas, pargos, peces piedra, pulpos, sepias, morenas, rayas, peces luna, barracudas…

CALPELas aguas que rodean al peñón de Ifach ofrecen otro enclave a tener en cuenta. Cualquier punto que lo bordea es inte-resante para bucear costeándolo, pues posee aguas poco profundas en las que se alternan zonas rocosas con prade-ras de posidonia y fondos arenosos. Quiénes deseen probar una inmersión con botella pueden decantarse por tres: los arcos, las redes y el pecio. La primera, y más famosa, toma su nombre de unas formaciones rocosas en forma de arcos a los pies del peñón en donde vive, a escasa profundidad, una vasta variedad de especies, incluido el caballito de mar, muy difícil de ver. Las otras inmersiones hacen referencia a una antigua zona cubierta por redes de pesca dada la prolife-ración de peces y a un punto donde se descubren diversos fragmentos de un viejo barco de pesca.

SIERRA HELADAEn el tramo de costa situado entre Altea y Benidorm desta-can dos zonas especialmente bonitas a los pies de la Sierra Helada: la isla Mediana y la cueva del elefante. A la prime-ra se la conoce también como la isla de los pulpos dejando claro que es un paraíso para estos moluscos cefalópodos; la segunda hace referencia a la curiosa forma de las rocas que indican el punto de una inmersión que se adentra por una fascinante cueva que está llena de estalactitas.

ISLA DE BENIDORMPara acabar, no podemos olvidar uno de los puntos más codiciados por los amantes del buceo en aguas mediterráneas, la Llosa. Se trata de un lugar solo apto para expertos, situado en la cara opuesta a la costa de la isla de Benidorm. Se sumerge a 33 metros en un abismo azul con fuertes corrientes ocasionales que atraen a peces de gran tamaño y que en sus arrecifes también aloja morenas, pulpos y crustáceos.

Along the coastline adjacent to Marina Greenwich exists many locations that are ideal to discover the richness of our sea-beds. Diving enthusiasts will find plac-es with easy access where there waits a varied and very colourful fauna and flora. And, of course, this doesn’t mean you have

to be an expert diver to discover such underwater beauty. Good snorkeling equipment is more than enough to come closer and fall in love with many of these landscapes.

The bay of Altea is part of the protected area of the Natural Park of Sierra Helada and not so far away, in Calpe, we can find another protected site, the Rock of Ifach and its waters. This guarantees us larger areas where it’s a lot easier to see greater quantities of species, as here the fishing is controlled.

ALTEACabo de Toix and the entire Mascarat Wall, which is the pro-longation to the sea from Sierra Bernia, is one of the most prolific places for diving, as it counts on seven locations of great interest with intriguing names such as The Springs, Neptune´s Garden, The Corner, The Light Point, The Bear, The Toix Point and on the side facing Calpe, The Cove. At the beginning of the cliff in shallow waters there are a number of freshwater springs that provide nutrients for the fish, so it’s an area full of life. On the back of the walls there are crevices and caves together with sandy and rocky bottoms, meadows full of sea grass and outcrops of coral, which makes this a privileged environment for the species that find here a very rich ecosystem. Here you can see lobsters, eels, groupers, sea bass, snappers, stone fish, octopus, cuttlefish, moray eels, stingrays, sunfish, barracudas...

CALPEThe waters surrounding the Rock of Ifach offer another en-clave to keep in mind. Any point that it borders is interesting for diving, as it offers shallow seabeds which alternate rocky areas with meadows of sea grass and sandy bottoms. Those who wish to take a dive with bottles have the option of three: The Arches, The Nets and The Wreck. The first, and most fa-mous, takes its name from rock formations shaped like arch-es at the foot of Ifach where there lives, in shallow depths, a large variety of species including seahorses, which are very difficult to see. The other dives refer to an older area cov-ered by fishing nets given the proliferation of fish and a point where various fragments of an old fishing boat can be found.

SIERRA HELADAOn the stretch of coast between Altea and Benidorm there are two locations particularly highlighted for their beauty which are situated at the foot of Sierra Helada: The Median Island and The Elephant Cave. The first one is also known as Octopus Island making it quite clear that it is a paradise for these mollusks cephalopods; the second refers to the pecu-liar shape of the rocks that indicate the point of immersion that enters into a fascinating cave that is full of stalactites.

BENIDORM ISLANDFinally, we can’t forget one of the most coveted spots for div-ing enthusiasts in these Mediterranean waters. It’s called La Llosa and it’s situated on the side of the island facing out to sea, and is only suitable for experts. It extends to a depth of 33 meters into a blue abyss with occasional strong currents that attract larger fish and within its reefs one can find moray eels, octopus and crustaceans.

Hace un año nos hablaba de un gran reto profesional y personal, competir en la mítica

regata en solitario, La Ruta del Ron. Y el pasado mes de diciembre su sueño se hizo

realidad, logrando la victoria y convirtiéndose en el primer navegante español en ganar una regata transoceánica estableciendo, de paso,

un nuevo récord… No podíamos perder la ocasión de volver a entrevistarle.

Enhorabuena… De Saint Malo (Francia) a la caribeña Guadalupe en 16 días, 17 horas, 47 minutos y 8 segundos a bordo del Tales II, un class 40 100% español. Victoria y récord. ¿qué te ha aportado esta nueva experiencia en solitario?He sido el tercer español en hacer la regata. En la primera edición estuvo Joaquín Coello y en 2010 Gonzalo Botín. En España no hay mucha tradición de navegación en solitario, pero yo sabía que nuestro proyecto era competitivo, te-níamos nivel. Salíamos a ganar. Todo ha sido muy intenso y emocionante. Cuando entras en una dinámica tan positiva, como la que hemos vivido en esta regata desde que empeza-mos a organizarla, todo va sobre ruedas. Ha sido un trabajo muy minucioso. Los pequeños errores cometidos durante la competición han sido por encabezonarme con alguna cosa puntual, pero nada grave, así es que he ido siempre con la moral muy alta y todo ha estado muy bien organizado. Ha sido muy bonito.

¿Cómo han sido esos 16 días?Los primeros días fueron los más duros, nada más salir rompí el foque y me quedé sin electrónica, pero cuando lo superé me vine arriba. Hemos tenido unas condiciones me-teorológicas muy favorables, y una vez pasado Finisterre me relajé un poco, pensé que lo más difícil había pasado ya. Por supuesto, también hay mucho trabajo de mesa de cartas, y

yo he estado todo el tiempo muy concentrado en mi trayec-toria y velocidad.

Las últimas 48 horas antes de llegar a meta fueron de nue-vo muy intensas. A unas 300 millas de Guadalupe, un tupido mar de algas gigantes hizo la navegación muy incómoda y pe-ligrosa, especialmente para la quilla y el timón. Fue ahí cuan-do además se me enredó el spinnaker en el estay, y en una breve calma tuve que subir al palo, cortarlo y quitarlo. Me preocupaba mucho el cansancio acumulado que cada vez iba notando más. Así es que durante las últimas nueve millas me las apañé para hacer dos mini-siestas, pues no quería llegar sin fuerzas para atender a la prensa que me iba a abordar.

El final de la regata fue muy rápido y, de hecho, cuando llegué ¡no había nadie de mi equipo para recibirme! Me recordaba a cuando empecé hace 15 años en las regatas mini, donde nos jugábamos el tipo navegando 10 días incomunicados y al llegar a meta no había nadie para recibirnos. Esta vez me pasó algo similar, pues al llegar tuve que usar las velas como defensas y no tenía ni amarras, ni hotel, ni camiseta para cambiarme… pero me daba igual. Pensé “yo ya he hecho lo que quería hacer. Me voy a tomar unas cervezas con los que estén y listo”. Anécdotas aparte, ahora tengo otro nivel téc-nico y deportivo y esta regata tiene mucha más difusión y alcance, pero la llegada tuvo ese punto y me hizo gracia.

¿Cómo se plantea uno algo tan básico como dormir y comer en una regata de estas características?He comido bastante pasta y arroz, no me quejo del menú. He bajado cuatro kilos, que no es mucho. Incluso he tenido tiempo para darme unas tres duchas durante la travesía. Estaba todo bien organizado y la dinámica ha sido muy buena. Dormir es otro cantar, llevaba un despertador que imita a una sirena de parking, pues en estas circunstancias es vital despertarse a tiempo. Su sonido era tan horrible que en muchas ocasiones me despertaba antes de que sonara y otras incorporaba el sonido al sueño… un día soñé que estaba en mi furgoneta esperando a que se levantara la barrera de un parking. El desgaste es brutal, se duerme entre tres y

cuatro horas de cada 24 en franjas de máximo 40 minutos. Y al principio y al final de la regata, se duerme aún menos.

¿Es cierto que tuviste un problema con las manos?Normalmente voy sin guantes y se me pelan las manos. Hago cayo y después, al acabar, lo pierdo. Pero en esta ocasión el segundo día me salieron dos cayos enormes y tuve que po-nerme guantes porque me quedaba mucho por delante, ¡no podía permitirme quedarme sin manos! Corrientes, mareas, inclemencias meteorológicas... a veces parece que estás pendiente de todo menos de ti mismo. Duermes mal, comes mal… estás desbordado de la cantidad de cosas que hay que tener en cuenta, y la cabeza es lo más importante.

¿qué pasó a sotavento de Guadalupe?La isla es muy alta sobre todo en la parte sureste, el viento es alisio y hay una montaña que ofrece una zona de calma total. En este escenario, frente a la capital, Basterre, se co-loca una boya a una milla de la costa y esto crea un efecto acordeón. Vas rápido y de repente cae el viento y te llega una fuerte racha del otro lado, tienes que frenar porque si no, te estrellas contra la costa. Es muy peligroso, imagina cómo afecta a los trimaranes de 40 pies. Mantienen este trazado por tradición, porque en la primera regata (1978)

no tenían muy claro si eran mas rápidos los monocascos o los multicascos. Y tras veintitantos días de navegación soli-taria (sin los sistemas de comunicación que hay ahora y con un seguimiento mucho más deficiente), fue muy excitante ver coincidir a dos embarcaciones en la llegada a meta. El monocasco de Malinovsky estaba entrando cuando llegó a toda velocidad el trimarán de Birch y lo superó por 98 se-gundos de diferencia.

un proyecto 100% español pero sin ningún tipo de patrocinador, ¿crees que ahora será más fácil conseguir financiación para nuevos proyectos?Nosotros teníamos nivel para estar en primera línea y he-mos hecho todo lo posible para estar ahí. Además hemos hecho una regata muy bien ganada. Pero efectivamen-te, fui sin patrocinador, un barco totalmente en blanco y 100% español. Esto es pura marca España y es increíble que se cuide así. Es algo que choca mucho, especialmente en el extranjero. Desde que gané he tenido muchas recep-ciones importantes, ahora por lo menos me llaman para escucharme y saber en qué proyectos ando. Creo que todo esto es muy bueno para mi y para la vela. Veremos.

¿Te han felicitado tus principales rivales, como Kito de Pavant?En el extranjero ha gustado que este tipo de vela empiece a desarrollarse en España. Somos los únicos que hemos hecho un proyecto así, 100% nacional. En cuanto a Kito, tengo mucha amistad con él. De hecho, correremos juntos la próxima Jacques Vabre. Le admiro mucho. Navega muy bien y nunca da nada por perdido. Cuando voy a Francia me hospedo en su casa, somos muy amigos y nuestra rivalidad es sana, constructiva. En la regata estuvimos relativamente cerca. Lo que me pasaba a mi, lo que me iba encontrando en la ruta, sabía que también le pasaba a Kito. Pensé en llamarle por radio en varias ocasiones y al final ninguno de los dos lo hizo, pero estuvimos ahí jugándonos el tipo y el barco, y sabíamos que estábamos en las mismas circunstancias.

¿Hubo algún momento durante la regata en el que pensaste “esto es imposible” o mantuviste siempre el áni-mo y la concentración?Cuando Gonzalo Botín me propuso este reto, me metí de cabeza. No era un proyecto con apoyo financiero, pero la profesionalidad y calidad humana de todos los integrantes era excelente. Le he dedicado un año y medio de trabajo. Durante la regata, en los momentos bajos me acordaba de toda la gente que lo ha hecho posible. Hemos compe-tido contra grandes proyectos y además hemos ganado.

Has sido el primer navegante español en recibir el prestigioso trofeo francés, Trophée Course Open uNCL, y también en España están reconociendo tu labor impor-tantes clubs náuticos, como el Real Club de Santander y Real Club Marítimo del Abra – Real Sporting Club… ¿qué significa todo esto para ti?

En cierto modo aún estoy aterrizando. Cuando llegué estaba desbordado. Los cuatro primeros días no paraba de sonar el teléfono, tenía entrevistas, ruedas de prensa, me inundaban de mails, whatsapps… ahora lo estoy procesando. Quere-mos proyectar una imagen honesta, transparente y cercana de la vela. Aún hay bastante oscurantismo en España. Hay que normalizar la vela. Dicho esto, estoy encantado con el resultado de esta regata, y muy agradecido. Para mejorarlo, sólo nos queda la Vendée Globe.

¿Estarás en la próxima cita de la Vendée Globe? Quiero estar, pero sé que es difícil. Organizarlo todo es un trabajo muy costoso pero afortunadamente tengo algunas posibilidades y mientras tenga ilusión lo voy a intentar. Va a ser difícil llegar a la edición de 2016 como nos gustaría, estaría bien ir con un barco existente y con la vista puesta en la siguiente, para diseñar y construir un barco desde cero.

¿Tienes alguna oferta para patrocinarte en esta ocasión?Aún no, estoy en ello. Tengo algunas pistas y cosas abiertas. Estoy moviéndome mucho y avanzando muy rápido. Ganar La Ruta del Ron me ha abierto muchas puertas y me ha dado mucha visibilidad.

¿Y este año qué harás?Quiero navegar al máximo en cosas que me gustan y en las que aprendo. Todo de cara a prepararme para la Vendée Globe. Me voy casi un mes a Omán con un equipo inglés. Y en octubre también quiero hacer la Transat Jacques Vabre.

Congratulations... From Saint Malo (France) to the Caribbean Guadeloupe in 16 days, 17 hours, 47 minutes and 8 seconds aboard Tales II, a class 40, 100% Spanish. Victory and record. What has this new solo experience meant to you? I’ve been the third Spaniard to do the race. In the first edi-tion Joaquín Coello did it and in 2010 Gonzalo Botín. In Spain there’s not a lot of tradition for sailing alone, but I knew that our project was competitive, we had the level. We went out to win. Everything has been very intense and excit-ing. When you enter in dynamics so positive such as we have lived in this race from the first moment of organizing it, then everything is worth the effort. It’s been a very meticulous job. The smaller mistakes made during the competition have been for my stubbornness over a specific thing, but nothing serious, so I was always in high spirits and everything has been very well organized. It’s been really great

How where those 16 days?The first days were the hardest, just at the start I broke the jib and I was left without electronics, but when I got over

that I started to pickup. We’ve had some very favourable weather conditions, and once pasted Finisterre I began to relax a bit, I thought that the hardest part was over now. Of course, there’s a lot of work also on the chart table, and I’ve been all the time concentrated on my course and speed.

The last 48 hours before crossing the line were again very intense. At about 300 miles from Guadeloupe, a dense sea of giant seaweed made the navigation very uncomfortable and dangerous, especially for the keel and rudder. It was there also where the spinnaker got entangled around the stay, and once the sea calmed I had to climb up the mast, cut it and remove it. I was very concerned about the accumulat-ed tiredness that each time I was noticing more. So during the last nine miles I managed to make two small naps, be-cause I didn’t want to arrive worn out to attend the press that were going to be there.

The final part of the race was very fast and, in fact, when I ar-rived, there wasn’t anybody of my team there to greet me! It reminded me of when I started 15 years ago in the mini rac-

yachtsman to win a transoceanic race and establishing, incidentally, a new record... So we couldn’t miss the occasion

to interview him again.

es, where you risked your neck 10 days isolated and when you crossed the finishing line, there wasn’t anybody there to receive you. This time something similar happened to me, as I had to use the sails as fenders, I didn’t even have ropes nor a hotel or tee-shirt to change into... but it was the same for me. I thought “I’ve just done what I wanted to do. I'm going to have a few beers with those who are around and that’s that”. Anecdotes aside, now I’ve got another technical and sport-ing level and this race has much more diffusion and scope, but the arrival had that point and it made me laugh.

How does one contemplate something so basic as sleeping and eating in a race with these characteristics?I've eaten quite a lot of pasta and rice, I can’t complain about the menu. I’ve lost four kilos, which isn’t a lot. In fact I’ve had time to take three showers during the crossing. Everything was well organized and the dynamics have been very good. To sleep is another story; I had an alarm clock that imitates a parking siren as in these circumstances it’s vital to wake-up on time. The noise was so horrible that on many occasions I woke up before it rang and other times incorporated it into my sleep... one day I dreamt I was in my van waiting for the parking barrier to raise. The fatigue is brutal, one sleeps for three to four hours in every 24 in intervals of maximum 40 minutes, and at the beginning and at the end of the race, even less.

Is it true you had a problem with your hands?Usually I go without gloves and my hands peel. A callus forms and after, at the end, it goes. But on this occasion on the second day I had two huge calluses and I had to put on gloves because I had a long way to go and I couldn’t afford to be without my hands! Currents, tides, weather conditions... sometimes it seems that you are aware of everything else except yourself. You sleep badly, eat badly... you're over-whelmed with the amount of things that you have to consid-er, and keeping your head is the most important.

What happened on the leeward side of Guadeloupe?The island is very high especially on the south east part, there’s a north-west wind and there’s a mountain that cre-ates an area of total calmness. In this scenario, with a buoy positioned a mile from the coast, opposite the capital, Bas-terre, this creates an accordion effect. You’re going quickly and then suddenly the wind drops, then you get a strong gust from the other side, well you’ve got to slow down oth-erwise you can end up on the shore. It’s very dangerous; imagine how it affects the 40 foot trimarans. They maintain this course for tradition, because in the first race (1978) they weren’t sure whether the monohulls were faster than the multihulls. And after twenty something days of solitary navigation (without the communication systems that there are these days and with poorer tracking systems), it was very exciting to see two boats coincide on the finishing line. The monohull of Malinovsky was entering when suddenly the trimaran of Birch arrived at full speed and overtook it with a difference of 98 seconds.

A 100% Spanish project without any type of spon-sor, do you think now it will be easier to get finance for new projects?We had the level to be at the forefront and we’ve done everything possible to be there. Apart from that we’ve done a well deserved regatta. But in effect, I went without a spon-sor, a boat entirely white and 100% Spanish. This is a pure Spanish mark and it’s incredible that this can happen. It’s something that surprises a lot, especially abroad. Since win-ning I’ve had many receptions and the most important has been the king of Spain. Now at least they call me to listen and to find out what projects I’m looking at. I think this is all very good for me and for the nautical world. Well, we’ll see.

Have your main rivals like Kito de Pavant, congratu-lated you yet?Abroad, they like that this type of sailing is developing in Spain. We are the only ones who have done a project like this, 100% national. As for Kito, I’m very friendly with him. In fact, we’re going to sail together in the next Jacques Vabre. I really admire him. He’s a great sailor and never takes any-thing for lost. When I go to France I stay at his home, we’re very good friends and our rivalry is healthy and construc-tive. In the race we were relatively close. What was happen-ing to me, and what I was finding along the route, I knew it

was also happening to Kito. I thought about calling him on the radio several times but in the end neither of us did it, but we were there risking our necks and the boat, and we knew we were in the same circumstances.

Was there any moment during the race when you thought "this is impossible" or did you always maintain your spirits high and your concentration?When Gonzalo Botín proposed this challenge to me, I jumped in head first. It wasn’t a project with financial sup-port, but the professionalism and human qualities of all the members was excellent. I've dedicated to it a year and a half of work. During the race, in those lower moments I remem-bered all the people who had made it possible. We’ve com-peted against larger projects and even so we’ve won.

You’re the first Spanish yachtsman to receive the prestigious French trophy, Trophée Course Open uNCL, and in Spain other important yacht clubs such as the Real Club of Santander and the Real Club Maritimo del Abra

- Real Sporting Club... are acknowledging your work. What does all this signify to you?In a way I’m still landing. When I arrived I was overwhelmed. The first four days the phone didn’t stop, I had interviews, press conferences, I was flooded with mails, whatsapps... and now I'm processing it all. We want to project an honest, transparent and accessible image to sailing. There is still a considerable obscurantism in Spain. Sailing needs to be nor-malized. Having said that, I’m delighted with the outcome of this race, and very grateful. To better it, we only have to do the Vendée Globe now.

Will you be at the next meeting of the Vendée Globe?I want to be, but I know it's hard. To organize it all is a very expensive job but fortunately I have some possibilities and while I’m still full of hope, I’m going to try. It’s going to be difficult to reach the 2016 edition as we would like, it would be great to go with an existing boat and with an eye on the next one, to design and build a boat from scratch.

Do you have an offer to sponsor you on this occasion?Not yet, I'm working on it. I have a few leads and things open. I'm moving a lot and advancing very quickly. Winning the Route du Rhum has opened a lot of doors for me and given me a lot of visibility.

And what are you going to do this year?I want to sail as much as I can in the things that I like and where I can learn, looking especially towards the prepara-tion for the Vendée Globe. I'm going to Oman for almost a month with an English team. And in October I also want to do the Transat Jacques Vabre.

Among those receptions that Alex Pella mentioned gener-ically, without a doubt the most important has been with His Majesty the King Felipe VI of Spain, with whom he met last February.

Este espectacular proyecto firmado por Stefan Monro está he-cho en base al mítico modelo Phantom de la casa inglesa Rolls Royce. Se trata de un prototipo que bien podríamos imaginar en manos de James Bond mientras surca a gran velocidad la bahía de una ciudad. Un pequeño yate de super lujo y diseño

con capacidad para dos pilotos y cuatro pasajeros que quizás pronto se haga realidad. 450 indica su extensión en pies (45,0) mientras que EX indica que se trata de un boceto experimental, que ha contado con el beneplácito de Rolls Royce pero no es un encargo de la casa. Monro lo ha presentado como proyecto de fin de carrera en la Universidad de Coventry (Reino Unido) tras su paso como becario en Rolls Royce. Y parece que ha sabido aprovechar al máximo su tiempo allí pues ha cap-tado y plasmado a la perfección el espíritu british y su estilo gentleman adaptado a un diseño moderno y rompedor, con la más puntera tecnolo-gía y sin perder un ápice de clase y elegancia. No en vano, este proyecto le ha valido el premio al mejor diseño Contechs Steve Olney de 2013.Con una eslora de 14 metros y una proa que recuerda mucho al morro del Phantom, el 450EX no tiene camarotes pues está concebido como yate de navegación costera, pero posee baño y un amplio espacio inte-rior de estilo minimalista en el que se sitúan los pilotos y pasajeros en seis asientos de cuero blanco que contrastan con el resto del espacio en el que domina la teka.

his spectacular project signed by Stefan Monro has been designed on the base of the legendary model Phantom by the English house of Rolls Royce. This is a prototype that one could well imagine in the hands of James Bond while he speeds across the bay of a city. A small but super luxu-

ry yacht design with the capacity for two pilots and four passengers, which may very soon become a reality. 450 indicates its length in feet (45.0) while EX denotes that this is an experimental concept, which has been welcomed by Rolls Royce but does not mean that it is a custom or-der. Monro presented this as his final year project at Coventry Univer-sity (UK) after his internship at Rolls Royce. And it appears that he has taken full advantage of his time there, because he has captured to per-fection the British spirit and gentleman style adapting them to a very modern and daring design, with all the latest in technology without los-ing an ounce of class and elegance. So not surprisingly, this project has earned him the Contechs 2013 Steve Olney award for the best design. With a length of 14 meters and a large bow that reminisces the nose of the Phantom, the 450EX doesn’t have cabins as its design is for coastal navigation, but it does have a bathroom and a spacious min-imalist style interior where the pilots and passengers are located in six white leather seats that contrast with the rest of the space which is enhanced with teak.

El pasado mes de noviembre Valladolid se convirtió durante unos días en el epicentro mundial de las tapas más deseadas, un auténtico laboratorio ex-perimental de gran nivel en el que el jurado del X Concurso Nacional de Pinchos y Tapas «Ciudad de Valladolid» otorgó el premio a la mejor tapa de Es-paña de 2014. La ganadora fue “Qué percibes”, un

trampantojo de percebes y foie elaborado por el alavés Iñaki Ro-drigo Rojas, del restaurante Punk Bach de Madrid. Una creación realmente delicada y sorprendente que según los expertos del certamen aunaba técnicas avanzadas, productos óptimos y una sensibilidad notable.

El jurado, presidido por el chef Martín Berasategui, no lo tuvo fá-cil pues la competición reúne a participantes realmente exigen-tes y creativos. El segundo premio fue para Helena Rodríguez Centeno del restaurante Goizeko-Kabi de Madrid, y el tercer puesto recayó en José Ignacio Castroviejo, del restaurante detapas Villa Paramesa de Valladolid, también de Madrid.

mÁs PremiadosAdemás de los tres primeros puestos también se premió otras categorías, como la de la «Tapa más Tradicional», que fue a parar al cocinero Alex Múgica (restaurante La Cocina de Alex Múgica, Pamplona, Navarra) por su creación “Zurrukutuna… todos a una”. Last November, Valladolid during a few days became the epicenter of the most desired tapas, an authentic experimental laboratory of the highest level where the jury of the X National Competition of Pinchos and Tapas "City of Valladolid" awarded the prize to the best tapa of Spain in 2014. The winner was "What do you perceive", a tompe l´oeil of barnacles and foie

elaborated by Iñaki Alava Rodrigo Rojas, from the Punk Bach restaurant in Madrid, a truly delicate and amazing creation that according to the experts of the competition, combined advanced techniques, ideal products and remarkable sensitivity.

The judges, chaired by the chef Martín Berasategui, didn’t find it easy as the competition brings together really demanding and creative participants. The second prize went to Helena Rodríguez Centeno from the restaurant Goizeko-Kabi in Ma-drid, and third place went to José Ignacio Castroviejo from the Villa Paramesa tapas restaurant, in Valladolid.

El concepto de la tapa es sin duda muy español,

aunque cada vez gana más adeptos en todos los

rincones del planeta. Hay varias teorías que expli-

can su origen pero la más aceptada lo atribuye a

una visita que realizó Alfonso XIII a Cádiz. Al pare-

cer, antes de regresar a palacio se detuvo a tomar

algo en la venta "Ventorrillo del Chato", en la playa

del mismo nombre. El monarca pidió una copa de

jerez y como hacía viento el camarero puso una

loncha de jamón sobre la copa, para evitar que en-

trara arena. Alfonso XIII quedó asombrado cuando

lo vio pero se comió el jamón antes de beberse el

jerez, e inmediatamente después pidió encantado

“otro jerez con tapa”.

The concept of the tapa is without a doubt very

Spanish, although it’s gaining more followers in

every corner of the planet. There are many theo-

ries that explain its origin, but the most accepted

is the one that attributes to a visit made by Alfon-

so XIII to Cadiz. Where, apparently, before he re-

turned to the palace he stopped to have a drink

at the inn “Ventorrillo del Chato”, situated on

the beach that has the same name. The monarch

asked for a glass of sherry and as it was a windy

day the waiter put a slice of ham on top of the

glass to keep the sand out. Alfonso XIII was aston-

ished when he saw it, but he ate the ham before

he drank the sherry, and immediately afterwards,

delightedly, asked for "another sherry with a lid”,

that is with a tapa!

¿qué tal ve de salud a los hombres españoles?En las últimas cuatro décadas la vida media de los varo-nes españoles ha aumentado en 10 años, subiendo de los 70 hasta casi los 80 años. Además envejecemos cada vez mejor, un 60% depende de la genética, pero un importan-te 40% depende del estilo de vida, incluido el deporte, la actitud ante los años, las ganas de vivir y de tener pro-yectos permanentemente.

La salud andrológica y urológica de los varones también ha mejorado enormemente ayudando a cumplir años en mejo-res condiciones. Antes los hombres no se cuidaban tanto, y tampoco existían los fármacos que hoy en día nos ayudan a envejecer mejor y más sanos.

Actualmente puedes encontrarte varones de 75-80 años de muy buen ver, con una magnífica sonrisa rejuvenecedora, maduritos pero aparentando ser más jóvenes. Lo de la son-risa es la mejor medicina y el gran secreto de la salud física y mental a partir de cierta edad.

Actualmente, ¿cuáles son los retos más esperanzadores en su campo?En el campo de la uroandrología, los grandes retos van liga-dos a la frecuencia de la patología tumoral prostática y de la disfunción sexual. El diagnóstico del cáncer de próstata antes de que manifieste síntomas es fundamental para conseguir un tratamiento curativo. Los métodos están evolucionando y cada vez son menos invasivos, evitando secuelas frecuen-tes y graves, como la impotencia y la incontinencia urinaria.

En el diagnóstico, el PCA-3 (test genético en orina) evita nu-merosas biopsias innecesarias en pacientes con PSA eleva-dos. Las nuevas investigaciones en el campo de la genética nos ayudarán muy pronto a conocer mejor los distintos tu-mores y podremos acceder a tratamientos más efectivos y menos violentos para los pacientes.

En la Unidad de Próstata que coordino en la Clínica Santa Elena de Madrid disponemos de Cirugía Laparoscópica Ro-bótica (Da Vinci), de HIFU (ultrasonidos de alta frecuencia), del último avance Focal One (HIFU focalizado por fusión de imágenes), Braquiterapia y la IMRT, en el ámbito de la ra-dioterapia, como los tratamientos más vanguardistas y de máximo nivel en el tratamiento de cáncer de próstata orga-noconfinado, y que no ha salido a otros órganos o tejidos.

Otro campo que ha sufrido un auténtico vuelco en los últi-mos años es el de la impotencia sexual del varón. Los pro-ductos vasoactivos han prolongado y mejorado la sexuali-dad de millones de hombres de todo el mundo. El Sildenafilo fue comercializado en EE.UU. en marzo de 1998 y en pocos

años fue récord de ventas en todo el mundo. Posteriormen-te han salido otros fármacos como el Tadalafilo y Vardenafilo con propiedades diferentes pero de eficacia similar. Gracias a esto, muchos varones han podido recuperar la “sonrisa re-juvenecedora”, a la que me refería antes.

Cambiemos de tema, ¿qué le trajo por Marina Greenwich y cómo la descubrió?Mi primera embarcación fue de 5,5 metros y con motor intraborda. Se llamaba My Alpha, la compré en 1995 de segunda mano a un conocido en L’Estartit (Gerona), y de inmediato la trasladé a Sitges. Íbamos en verano, muchos fines de semana y puentes al Hotel Meliá, junto al Port d'Aiguadolç. Pero pronto nos cansamos de tener la barquita tan lejos de Madrid y decidimos recorrer la costa en dirección descendente. Vimos muchas marinas hasta

que llegamos a Altea. La visita a Campomanes en 1998 fue como un flechazo, y conocer a Rosa en Capitanía, definitivo. Alquilamos un amarre y en menos de una semana My Alpha estaba en Altea. Los primeros años en Altea íbamos a otro Hotel Meliá, esta vez en Altea Hills. Nos gustó tanto la zona que acabamos comprando un apartamento, y con el tiempo, al igual que la barca, se quedaron pequeños. En 2004 cambiamos My Alpha por una barca algo mayor y con dos motores. Me di el gustazo de estrenarla y bautizarla con el nombre de Pelao, mi “mote” entre los amigos de Aiguadolç. Con la nueva barca compré un amarre y hasta hoy. En 2011 estrenamos un bonito ático en lo más alto de Altea Hills.

Han pasado los años, y mis limitaciones náuticas y las pocas ganas de aventura, han motivado que para mí el Pelao sea la barca con la que pienso jubilarme, eso sí, dentro de muchos años, porque en el mar uno se jubila cuando quiere.

¿Qué prefiere la navegación a vela o a motor?Me gusta más la vela, pero si es de algún amigo. La verdad es que yo vengo a Altea a descansar en todos los sentidos y la vela requiere más dedicación de la que estoy dispuesto a darle. El Pelao es muy manejable, me lo cuida una persona de confianza, y cuando llego de Madrid zarpo sin muchos que-braderos de cabeza rumbo a mis cortos trayectos costeros… y tan feliz. Me conformo con costear, hacer snorkel con el buen tiempo y saborear las comidas de las marinas cercanas o de poblaciones como Moraira, Calpe o Jávea, o Benidorm y Villajoyosa por el sur.

Sabemos que es un hombre muy familiar, ¿les inculca su pasión por el mar a sus nietos?Mi mujer –que también es patrón– y yo nos limitamos a pasearles y dejamos que decidan ellos si les gusta o no. Somos una buena pandilla. Con cinco hijos y ocho nietos, más yernos, nuera y amigos somos unos cuan-tos, y para salir juntos tendríamos que alquilar una embarcación más grande… todo se andará. Cuando el mar está calmado y salimos a calas cercanas, les en-señamos a los más pequeños el respeto por el mar y los cuidados del medio ambiente marino, así como las precauciones que deben tener para disfrutar del baño desde una embarcación.

una travesíaSólo hemos hecho una, haciendo escala en las islas cruza-mos entre el sur de Córcega y Cerdeña, y desde Porto Cer-vo mi mujer y yo nos fuimos a Roma, regresando a Madrid en avión.

He also collaborates, by spreading his medical knowledge, on various radios, televisions and publications, among others, MG MAGAZINE.

What do you think about the health of the Spanish men?In the last four decades the average life of Spanish men has increased by 10 years, rising from 70 to almost 80 years. Besides we’re aging better everyday, 60% depends on ge-netics, but a significant 40% depends on our lifestyle, in-cluding sport, attitude towards age, the desire to live and to be permanently occupied.

The andrology and urological health of the male has also improved greatly helping to fulfill years in better condi-tions. Before, men didn’t take so much care of themselves and neither did there exist medicines that we have today to help us age better and healthier.

At present you can find males 75-80 years very good look-ing, with a magnificent rejuvenating smile, mature but ap-pearing to be younger. A good smile is the best medicine and the great secret of physical and mental health after a certain age.

At the moment, what are the most promising challenges in your field?In the uroandrologic field, the great challenges are linked to the frequency of the prostate tumor pathology and sexual dysfunction. The diagnosis of prostate cancer before the symptoms appear is essential to achieve a cure. The meth-ods are evolving and becoming less invasive, avoiding fre-quent and severe effects, such as impotence and urinary incontinence.

In the diagnosis, the PCA-3 (genetic test in urine) avoids many unnecessary biopsies in patients with elevated PSA. New research in the field of genetics will help us very soon to know more about different tumors and we will be able to gain access to more effective treatments with less violence for the patients.

In the Prostate Unit that I coordinate in the Santa Elena Clinic in Madrid we have Robotic Laparoscopic Surgery (Da Vinci) of HIFU (high frequency ultrasound), the latest development Focal One (HIFU focused by image fusion), Brachytherapy and IMRT in the area of radiotherapy, the most advanced and of highest level for the treatment of localized prostate cancer, if it hasn’t gone to other organs or tissues.

Another area that has suffered a real turnaround in recent years is that of male sexual impotence. Vasoactive prod-ucts have prolonged and improved sexuality of millions of men around the world. Sildenafil was marketed in the US in March 1998 and within a few years it had record sales worldwide. After that other medicines have come on the market like Tadalafil, and Vardenafil with different proper-ties but similar efficacy. Thanks to this, many men have been able to recuperate the "rejuvenating smile", to which I re-ferred earlier.

To change the subject, what brought you to Marina Greenwich and how did you discovered it?My first boat was a 5.5 meters with an inboard engine. It was called My Alpha, I bought it in 1995 second hand from an acquaintance in L'Estartit (Gerona), and immediately I moved it to Sitges. We went in summer and many weekends to the Hotel Meliá, next to Port d'Aiguadolç. But very soon we got tired of having the little boat so far away from Madrid so we decided to explore the coast southwards. We saw many marinas until we got to Altea. The visit to Campomanes in 1998 was like cupids arrow, and meeting Rosa in the Captaincy was final. We rented a mooring and in less than a week My Alpha was in Altea.

The first years in Altea we went to another Meliá Hotel, this time in Altea Hills. We liked the area so much we ended up buying an apartment, and over time, like the boat they became too small. In 2004 we changed My Alpha for a boat a little bigger with two engines. I treated myself to launching it and baptized her with the name of Pelao, my "nickname" among my friends of Aiguadolç. With the new boat I bought a mooring until today. In 2011 we premiered a very nice penthouse on the highest peak of Altea Hills.

The years have passed, and my nautical limitations together with not so much enthusiasm for adventure, have motivated that the Pelao will be the boat I think to retire with, of course, in a few years from now, because in the sea one retires when you want.

Do you like sailing or prefer motor boating?I like more to sail, but better when it’s a friends. The truth is that I come to Altea to rest in every way and sailing re-quires more dedication than I am willing to give it. The Pelao is very manageable, its looked after by a person that I trust, and when I come from Madrid I can set out without a lot of trouble, on course to my short coastal trips... and as happy as a Sam boy. I’m satisfied just coasting, do a bit of snorkeling with good weather and enjoy the food in the other nearby marinas or other towns like Moraira, Calpe and Javea, or Benidorm and Villajoyosa in the south.

We know you are a very family man; do you instill your passion for the sea in your grandchildren?My wife –who is also a skipper– and I just take them on rides and we let them decide for themselves if they like it or not. We are a good bunch. With five grown up children and eight grandchildren, including son in laws and daughter in laws and friends we’re quite a few, and to go out together we would have to rent a bigger boat... maybe in time. When the sea is calm and we go to nearby coves, we teach the little ones respect for the sea and the care of the marine environ-ment, as well as the precautions that they should take to en-joy a swim from the boat.

A crossingWe’ve only done one, stopping over in the islands, we crossed between the south of Corsica and Sardinia, and from Porto Cervo my wife and I went to Rome, returning to Madrid by plane.

Kon Tiki

El noruego Thor Heyerdahl, que falleció en 2002 a la edad de 87 años, fue uno de esos personajes que dejan huella en la historia. Originariamente biólogo marino, demostró en el transcurso de su vida mucho más inte-rés por la antropología que por los animales. Thor dejó tras de sí un legado de historias y

vivencias dignas de película. Aventuras que quisieron emu-lar los grandes viajes emprendidos por civilizaciones an-tiguas. Seguramente muchos le recuerden más que por su nombre, por el gran viaje por el Pacífico en la balsa llamada Kon Tiki. Y es que de todas sus aventuras, ésta fue la más espectacular. Es la historia de 101 días y 4.300 millas a bor-

do del mismísimo Pacífico, sobre un mero lecho de troncos. ¿Quién dijo que no era posible cruzar medio mundo así?

El motivo que le llevó a emprender tan insólito viaje fue de-mostrar su particular teoría. Thor defendía la hipótesis de que los polinesios descendían de los pobladores de la Amé-rica del Sur precolombina y que el océano que separa am-bos mundos no fue una causa de aislamiento, sino más bien el nexo de unión entre civilizaciones. surcar los mares hasta unir los más dispares destinos. Hacía falta experimentarlo, vivirlo en la propia piel. Así que Thor decidió emprender un viaje que dejó al mundo entero ex-pectante, más que nada por lo excéntrico y peregrino de la idea, todo sea dicho. Pero Heyerdahl no iba sólo, se las ha-bía arreglado sin gran dificultad para reunir a un equipo de cinco hombres dispuestos a cruzar el Pacífico con él, en una rudimentaria balsa de madera.

La Kon Tiki sería una embarcación hecha según las sencillas técnicas desarrolladas por los antiguos peruanos. Para su construcción, Thor se presentó en Ecuador acompañado de Herman, un ingeniero que prácticamente se había unido a su causa de la noche a la mañana. Allí se hicieron con la madera, materia prima de la futura embarcación. Los tron-cos los transportaron río abajo por el Guayas hasta llegar a Guayaquil, desde donde fueron enviados en barco hasta la Marina de Callao para realizar allí la obra. La embarcación consistía básicamente en nueve troncos –de cerca de 15 metros de largo y 60 centímetros de grosor– que se ensam-blaron únicamente con cabos de cáñamo, ni un mísero clavo fue usado.

Y así, el 28 de abril de 1947 seis hombres zarparon desde Callao rumbo al oeste: Heyerdahl, Knut Hasugland, Bengt Danielsson, Erick Hesselberg, Torstein Raaby y Herman Watzinger. Sólo Hesselberg tenía experiencia náutica, pero desde luego no a bordo de una precaria balsa. Debían rea-lizar el viaje contando tan sólo con los medios con los que podían haber dispuesto aquellos a los que pretendían emu-lar, así que aprendieron a gobernar la embarcación en plena travesía por la corriente de Humboldt, su autopista hacia Polinesia. Contaban con los vientos alisios y la corriente ecuatorial, que van hacia el oeste debido a la rotación de la Tierra. Las previsiones realizadas contemplaban 97 días

de navegación. Y lo sorprendente es que lo consiguieron en unos pocos días más: 101 días hasta llegar al atolón de Raroia, en el archipiélago polinesio de Tuamotu. Aunque la jornada del día 97 ya habían alcanzado la isla de Angatau, sólo que la corriente les impidió arribar a tierra...

El viaje no fue fácil, las largas noches y la crudeza del mar se encargaron de que no faltara ni emoción ni riesgo a bor-do de la Kon Tiki. Una carrera de obstáculos agravada a cada instante. Para alimentarse, se proveían de lo que el océano les brindaba. Y durante las 4.300 millas de trave-sía, Heyerdahl fue tomando nota de todo cuanto aconte-cía, e igualmente lo registró en lo que más tarde tomaría forma de documental. Un documental que obtuvo el Oscar en 1951, mientras que su libro, The Kon Tiki expedition, fue traducido a más de 65 idiomas.

Con la expedición Kon Tiki, Thor cubrió el trayecto que en su opinión emprendieron los primeros hombres que llegaron a las islas polinesias y demostró que no había impedimentos técnicos por los que los antiguos pobladores de América del Sur no pudieran haber emprendido tales viajes. Sin embar-go, y basados fundamentalmente en evidencias genéticas, la comunidad científica sigue creyendo que Polinesia fue poblada desde el oeste hacia el este, es decir, que sus ante-pasados serían asiáticos y no americanos. En cualquier caso, lo que nadie puede negar es que gracias a su teoría, y sobre todo a su praxis y gran espíritu aventurero, despertó el inte-rés del público y reavivó la atención internacional sobre las antiguas civilizaciones, ofreciendo nuevos puntos de vista e incitando a la investigación. Por sus teorías sobre las migra-ciones humanas en débiles embarcaciones y su decisión de ponerlas en práctica realizando él mismo tales viajes, Thor Heyerdahl se ha convertido en uno de los noruegos más fa-mosos del siglo XX.

The Norwegian Thor Heyerdahl, who died in 2002 at the age of 87, was one of those characters who leave his mark in history. Originally a marine biologist, but over the course of his life he demonstrated much more interest in anthropology than for an-imals. Thor left behind a legacy of stories

and experiences worthy of a film. Adventures that wanted to emulate the great voyages undertaken by ancient civiliza-tions. Probably many remember him more for the great voy-age across the Pacific on the raft called Kon Tiki, rather than for his name. As out of all his adventures, this one was the most spectacular. It’s the story of 101 days over 4,300 miles on board the selfsame Pacific, on just a mere bed of logs. Who said it wasn’t possible to cross half the world like that?

The reason that led him to do such an incredible journey was to demonstrate his particular theory. Thor defended the hypothesis that the people from South America could have settled in the Polynesia in pre-Columbian times and that the ocean that separated both worlds was not the cause of iso-lation, but rather the link between the civilizations. The idea of an ocean that unites was a constant in his different theses on migration. And in this case, to demonstrate that such a feat was possible, it wasn’t sufficient to prove that the winds and ocean currents effectively help to sail the seas bringing together the most disparate destinations. He needed to ex-perience it, live it in his own skin. So Thor decided to make a journey that left the whole world expectant, mostly for the eccentric and outlandishness of the idea, dare I say. But

Heyerdahl wasn’t alone; he had managed without difficulty to get together a team of five willing men to cross the Pacific with him in a rudimentary wooden raft.

The Kon Tiki would be a vessel made accordingly to the simple techniques developed by the ancient Peruvians. For its construction, Thor went to Ecuador accompanied by Herman, an engineer who had practically joined his cause overnight. There they acquired the wood, the raw material necessary for their future vessel. The logs were transport-ed downstream to Guayaquil by the Guayas, and from there sent on by ship to the Callao Marina to carry on the work. The vessel was basically made up of nine trunks –of about 15 meters long and 60 centimeters thick– which they as-sembled with only hemp rope and not one tiny nail was used.

And so, on the 28th of April, 1947, six men set sail from Callao westbound: Heyerdahl, Knut Hasugland, Bengt Danielsson, Erick Hesselberg, Torstein Raaby and Herman Watzinger. Only Hesselberg had sailed before, but cer-tainly not on board a precarious raft. They had to make the journey counting only on the same means that those peo-ple who they sought to emulate, could have had, so while crossing the current of Humboldt, their highway to the Pol-ynesia, they learned to govern the vessel. They had at their disposal the trade winds and the equatorial current, which flows westward due to the rotation of the Earth. The fore-casts contemplated 97 days of navigation, and the most amazing thing is, that they did it in just a few more: 101 days to reach the atoll of Raroia, in the Polynesian Tuamotu

The journey was not easy, the long nights and the severity of the sea saw to it that no emotion or risk was missing on-board the Kon Tiki. A long course of obstacles aggravated every moment. To feed themselves, they had to make do with what the ocean provided them. And during the 4,300 mile voyage, Heyerdahl would take note of everything that was happening, as well as registering in what later would take the form of a documentary. A documentary which won an Oscar in 1951, while his book, The Kon Tiki expedition, was translated into more than 65 languages.

With the Kon Tiki expedition, Thor undertook the route that in his opinion the first people had done to reach the Poly-nesian islands, demonstrating that there was no technical impediments why the ancient inhabitants of South Ameri-ca could not have done such trips. However, based funda-mentally on genetic evidence, the scientific community still believes that the Polynesia was populated from the west to the east, that’s to say, that their ancestors would have been Asians and not Americans. Whatever the case, nobody can deny that thanks to his theory and especially his abilities, together with his great adventurous spirit, he aroused the

interest of the public and reignited international attention about the ancient civilizations, offering new perspectives and encouraging research. So for his theories about hu-man migration in primitive vessels and his decision to put them into practice by making the same trips, Thor Heyer-dahl has become one of the most famous Norwegians of the twentieth century.

“A veces alguien hablaba en un bote. Pero en su mayoría los botes iban

en silencio, salvo por el rumor de los remos. Se desplegaron después

de haber salido de la boca del puerto y cada uno se dirigió hacia aque-

lla parte del océano donde esperaba encontrar peces. El viejo sabía

que se alejaría mucho de la costa y dejó atrás el olor a tierra y entró

remando en el limpio olor matinal del océano. Vio la fosforescencia de los sar-

gazos en el agua mientras remaba sobre aquella parte del océano que los pes-

cadores llaman el gran hoyo porque se producía una súbita hondonada de sete-

cientas brazas, donde se congregaba toda suerte de peces debido al remolino

que hacía la corriente contra las escabrosas paredes del lecho del océano […]

En la oscuridad el viejo podía sentir venir la mañana y mientras remaba oía el

tembloroso rumor de los peces voladores que salían del agua y el siseo que sus

rígidas alas hacían surcando el aire en la oscuridad. Sentía una gran atracción

por los peces voladores que eran sus principales amigos en el océano. Sentía

compasión por las aves, especialmente las pequeñas, delicadas y oscuras go-

londrinas de mar […], y pensó: las aves llevan una vida más dura que nosotros,

salvo las de rapiña y las grandes y fuertes. ¿Por qué habrán hecho pájaros tan

delicados y tan finos como esas golondrinas de mar cuando el océano es capaz

de tanta crueldad? El mar es dulce y hermoso. Pero puede ser cruel, y se enco-

leriza tan súbitamente, y esos pájaros […] son demasiado delicados para la mar.

Decía siempre la mar. Así es como le dicen en español cuando la quieren. A ve-

ces los que la quieren hablan mal de ella, pero lo hacen siempre como si fuera

una mujer. Algunos de los pescadores más jóvenes, los que usaban boyas y flo-

tadores para sus sedales y tenían botes de motor comprados cuando los híga-

dos de tiburón se cotizaban altos, empleaban el artículo masculino, le llamaban

el mar. Hablaban del mar como un contendiente o un lugar, o aún un enemigo.

Pero el viejo lo concebía siempre como perteneciente al género femenino y

como algo que concedía o negaba grandes favores, y si hacía cosas perversas y

terribles era porque no podía remediarlo. La luna, pensaba, le afectaba lo mis-

mo que a una mujer.”

Toda actividad al aire libre, deportiva o de ocio,

tiene distintos riesgos –según el tipo de actividad

y la edad del que la practica– de traumatismos

en los huesos y/o articulaciones. En esta ocasión

veremos los esguinces y luxaciones y aprenderemos cómo

conviene reaccionar.

En las embarcaciones de vela y motor los riesgos son debi-

dos generalmente a imprudencias fácilmente previsibles,

y por lo tanto prevenibles. No es lo mismo caminar por la

cubierta un día de mar en calma, con el suelo seco, que co-

rretear por la cubierta mojada, un día de mar arbolada. Las

posibilidades de accidentarse en el segundo caso son mayo-

res obviamente, y más si la persona que corre imprudente-

mente es una persona de edad avanzada.

Elegir el calzado apropiado en el barco es el primer consejo

de prevención en los traumatismos a bordo. El sentido co-

mún, como en cualquier actividad de la vida, es lo más im-

portante. Pero los accidentes no se buscan generalmente,

simplemente suceden y aquí explicaremos qué debemos ha-

cer ante un accidente traumático ya sucedido. Las personas

más susceptibles de sufrir estos accidentes a bordo son los

ancianos y los niños.

Un trauma sobre una articulación puede producir un es-

guince o una luxación. El traumatismo puede ser externo

(golpe) o un movimiento brusco e intenso, con fuerzas sobre

la articulación que produzcan dichas lesiones.

En ambos casos los huesos implicados sufren una separa-

ción, la diferencia es que en el esguince los huesos recupe-

ran su situación inicial y en la luxación los huesos implicados

no vuelven a su posición de partida. Hay luxaciones comple-

tas e incompletas (subluxaciones). En ambos casos se puede

tomar un analgésico, como paracetamol o metamizol, en las

primeras fases que son las más dolorosas, pero no antiinfla-

matorios, pues facilitan las hemorragias.

La articulación en la que se producen más frecuentemente

las luxaciones es la del hombro, 95 % luxación anterior y 5%

posterior. La sospecha es fácil por el dolor intenso, la defor-

mación de la zona y la incapacidad de movimiento de forma

inmediata. El tobillo y la cadera son las siguientes articula-

ciones en frecuencia de luxaciones, seguidas por las rodillas

y las cervicales.

Los primeros auxilios consisten en buscar el posicionamien-

to menos doloroso, aplicar hielo en la zona como analgési-

co e inmovilizar la articulación afectada, hasta llegar a un

centro sanitario. Sólo si hay presente un experto sanitario

se puede intentar reducir la luxación, de lo contrario no se

debe porque puede ser peor el remedio que la enfermedad.

En los esguinces las lesiones van desde estiramientos, con

o sin torsiones de los ligamentos (esguinces leves), hasta la

rotura de los mismos (esguinces graves), pero sin salida de

los huesos de su ubicación habitual en la articulación. De

mayor a menor frecuencia se producen en tobillos, rodillas,

hombros y codos.

Los esguinces también producen dolor intenso y su trata-

miento en primeros auxilios es el mismo que en el caso de

las luxaciones: se inmoviliza la zona lesionada en la posición

menos dolorosa y se aplica hielo como analgésico local, que

también previene o atenúa la aparición de hematomas.

Los tratamientos posteriores dependerán de los grados del

esguince y de si hay rotura o no, total o parcial, de los liga-

mentos implicados. Dichos tratamientos van desde la inmo-

ligamentos. Posteriormente, realizar una correcta rehabili-

tación será importante.

Any outdoor activity, sport or leisure, has differ-

ent risks –according to the type of activity and

the age of the person who practice them– of

traumas to the bones and/or joints. In this oc-

casion we are going to look at sprains and dislocations and

learn how we should react.

On sailing and motor boats the risks are generally due to

carelessness easily foreseeable, and therefore preventable.

It is not the same to walk on a dry deck on a calm day at sea,

as to run on a wet deck, on a stormy day. The chances of an

accident in the second case are obviously greater, especially

if the person running recklessly is an older person.

Choosing the right shoes on a boat is the first tip against

preventing injuries on board. Common sense, as in any ac-

tivity of life, is the most important. But we don’t look for ac-

cidents generally, they simply happen and here we are going

to explain what we should do when confronted with a trau-

matic accident. Those persons most susceptible to these ac-

cidents on board are the elderly and children.

A trauma to a joint may produce a sprain or dislocation.

The injury may be external (knock) or a sudden and intense

movement, making pressure on the joint that produces

these lesions.

In both cases the bones implicated suffer a separation, the

difference is that with a sprain the bones recover their initial

situation and with the dislocation the bones involved do not

return to their initial position. There are dislocations com-

plete and incomplete (subluxations). In both cases you can

take a painkiller, such as paracetamol or metamizol, in the

early stages that are the most painful, but not inflammatory,

because they facilitate bleeding.

The joint where dislocations occur more frequently is in the

shoulder, 95% dislocation anterior and 5% posterior. This is

easy to suspect for the intense pain, the deformation in the

area and the inability to move immediately. The ankle and

hip are the following joints frequently dislocated, followed

by the knees and neck.

First aid consists in finding the position where there is less

pain, applying ice to the area as an analgesic and immobi-

lizing the affected joint, all the way to the hospital. Only if

there is present a health expert can you try to reduce the

dislocation, otherwise you should not because the remedy

may be worse than the injury.

With sprains these injuries range from a tear, with or with-

out twisting of the ligaments (mild sprains), to breaking

them (severe sprains), without protrusion of the bones from

their usual situation in the joint. From highest to lowest fre-

quency they occur in ankles, knees, shoulders and elbows.

Sprains also produce severe pain and their first aid treatment

is the same as in the case of dislocations: the injured area is

immobilized in the position less painful and ice is applied as

a local analgesic, which also prevents and reduces bruising.

The subsequent treatments will depend on the degree of

the sprain or if there is a total or partial tear or not, of the

ligaments involved. These treatments range from immobi-

lization with a compression bandage in mild degrees, up to

surgery and plaster when there is a total tear or substantial

damage to the ligaments. Subsequently, to make a success-

ful rehabilitation is important.

• 4- CuEVA DEL ELEFANTE: Situada en plena Sierra Helada, entre Altea y Benidorm, es conocida así por la curiosa formación

rocosa que hay encima de la entrada de esta cueva submarina. Se encuentra a 12 metros de profundidad, en aguas cristalinas

y tiene una longitud de 25 metros. Aquí es fácil encontrar una gran variedad de peces, esponjas y moluscos.

• 5- ISLA MEDIANA: Situada muy cerca de la anterior, a esta inmersión se la conoce también como “la isla de los pulpos”, dada

su proliferación. También destaca por los bancos de castañuelas, Chromis chromis, que son especialmente abundantes. Alcan-

za una profundidad máxima de 22 metros.

• 6- LA LLOSA: Queda detrás de la isla de Benidorm, lejos de la costa y en aguas profundas. Es una inmersión que alcanza los

35 metros y está considerada como la más hermosa de la zona, por la gran variedad de especies que se avistan, especialmente

peces grandes y singulares como la escórpa o cabracho.

El Consejo de Ministros aprobó en septiembre

de 2014 el Real Decreto que establece el ré-

gimen jurídico y normas de seguridad y pre-

vención de la contaminación de los buques de

recreo de más de 24 metros de eslora y arqueo

bruto inferior a 3000 GT susceptibles de transportar hasta

12 pasajeros, coloquialmente conocidos como megayates.

De esta forma se regula por primera vez en España la situa-

ción específica de estos buques de recreo, lo que favorecerá

su matriculación en España y facilitará a los astilleros la uni-

ficación de estándares de diseño y comercialización de sus

productos dentro y fuera del país, por lo que supondrá un

incremento de su actividad relacionada con la construcción

y reparación de estos buques.

Entre otros requisitos, el Real Decreto establece la tripu-

lación que deben llevar estos megayates en uso privado o

comercial; los sistemas de comunicaciones; las autoriza-

ciones y certificaciones necesarias; las inspecciones que

deben pasar; las responsabilidades del propietario y pa-

sajeros; o por dónde y en qué condiciones deben navegar.

También determina las normas técnicas de seguridad y

prevención de la contaminación que deben cumplir estos

buques de recreo, desde su construcción y resistencia es-

tructural, las características de la maquinaria, la instalación

eléctrica y el equipo de gobierno, hasta los dispositivos de

salvamento, la seguridad contra el fuego, las radiocomuni-

caciones, medios de fondeo, amarre y remolque; y los aloja-

mientos y protección de las personas.

The Council of Ministers approved last Septem-

ber 2014 the Royal Decree establishing the le-

gal rules and standards on safety and pollution

prevention for recreational vessels of more

than 24 meters in length with a gross tonnage

of less than 3000 GT capable of transporting up to 12 pas-

sengers, commonly referred to as mega yachts.

In this way for the first time in Spain the specific situation

of these recreational vessels will be regulated, thereby pro-

moting registration in Spain and making it easier for the

shipyards to unify design standards and commercialize their

products in and outside the country, which will mean an in-

crease in its activity related to the construction and repara-

tion of these vessels.

Among other requirements, the Royal Decree establishes

the crew that these mega yachts should employ for private

or commercial use; the communication systems; the neces-

sary permits and certifications; inspections they must un-

dergo; the liabilities of the owner and passengers; or when

and under what conditions they should navigate.

It also stipulates the technical standards of safety and pol-

lution prevention that these recreational vessels must com-

ply too, from their construction and structural strength, to

the characteristics of the machinery, electrical installations

and the governing equipment, even the safety and rescue

systems, fire–extinguishing systems, radio–electronics, the

means for anchoring, mooring and towing; and the accom-

modation and protection of the people.

Es Vedràla silenciosa y misteriosa

Es Vedrà es un hermoso islote rocoso situa-do en el suroeste de Ibiza, frente a la cala d´Hort. Forma parte de una reserva natu-ral y ha sido siempre considerado en la isla como un lugar mágico y enigmático, lleno

de energía y fuerza. Es uno de los vértices del llamado “triángulo del silencio”, junto al peñón de Ifach en Calpe y la isla Dragonera en el sureste de Mallorca. Un espacio marítimo en el que se dice que las brújulas pierden su norte fácilmente, donde se oyen extraños ruidos y don-de se producen frecuentes avistamientos de ovnis. De hecho, existe una leyenda popular que asegura que bajo el islote se halla una especie base submarina de ovnis, atraídos por la energía magnética que desprende este enclave, tal y como ocurre en las pirámides de Egipto, en el famoso círculo de piedra de Stonehenge o en la isla de Pascua. También hay voces que apuntan a que éste po-dría ser un vestigio de la Atlántida o que precisamente por su característica irradiación magnética, desde que se separó de Ibiza se convirtió en su centinela protector, y lo cierto es que con sus 382 metros de altura y 60 hec-táreas parece una enorme catedral gótica que emerge del agua. Una imponente roca caliza que posee numero-sas cavidades, laberintos, cañones submarinos y cuevas que contribuyen a la sinfonía musical que emana el vien-to al atravesar este monolito.

Son muchos los testimonios que aseguran haber oído extraños ruidos y avistado luces en la zona. A mediados del siglo XIX, el sacerdote carmelita Francisco Palau ase-guró haber visto durante sus meditaciones en el islote a una dama de luz y a seres celestiales o extraterrestres. Y uno de los sucesos más llamativos de los que se tiene registro oficial es el llamado “caso Manises” que cuen-ta como el 11 de noviembre de 1979 un avión tuvo que realizar un aterrizaje de emergencia en Valencia tras afirmar que se vio amenazado por un objeto volador no identificado en Es Vedrà.

Sea como sea, lo cierto es que Es Vedrà posee una be-lleza incuestionable que transmite muchas sensaciones y resulta un lugar muy inspirador y creativo para escri-tores, pintores y artistas, como David Gilmour de Pink Floyd con su The orb feat o Mike Oldfield cuando com-puso su famoso Voyager.

Es Vedra is a beautiful small rocky island lo-cated in the Southwest of Ibiza, in front of the Cala d’Hort. It forms part of a nature reserve and has always been considered on the island as being a magical and mysteri-

ous place, full of energy and strength. It forms part of the “triangle of silence”, together with the Rock of Ifach in Calpe and the isle of Dragonera in the Southeast of Mallorca. It’s a maritime area where it is said that com-passes easily lose their bearings, where strange noises are heard and where frequent sightings of unidentified flying objects occur. In fact, there exists a popular leg-end that assures that there is a secret base of UFO´s under the island, attracted by the magnetic energy that this enclave releases, exactly the same that occurs in the pyramids of Egypt, in the famous circle of Stonehenge or on Easter Island. There are also other opinions that suggest that this could be a remnant of the Atlantis, or precisely because of its magnetic radiation char-acteristic, since its separation from Ibiza has become her sentinel protector, and the fact is that with its 382 meters high and 60 hectares it looks like a huge gothic cathedral emerging from the water. It is an impressive sedimentary rock that possesses many cavities, mazes, underwater canyons and caves that contribute to the musical symphony that the wind emanates while pass-ing through this monolith.

Many are the testimonies that claim to have heard strange noises and have seen strange lights in the area. In the mid-nineteenth century a Carmelite priest, Fran-cisco Palau, said he had seen during his meditations on the islet a lady of light and celestial beings. And one of the most striking events which is officially recorded is the “Manises case” which reports that on the 11th of November, 1979 a plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Valencia after stating that it was threatened by an UFO over Es Vedra.

Whatever the case may be, the fact is that Es Vedra has an undeniable beauty that transmits many sensations and results in a very inspiring and creative place for writers, painters and artists such as David Gilmour of Pink Floyd with his The orb feat or Mike Oldfield when he composed his famous Voyager.

It’s one of the symbols of Ibiza, an imposing mass of great beauty that possesses a history full of mystery and paranormal elements.

La hidrólisis visible se presenta en forma de ampollas que aparecen en la obra viva y dependiendo de su tamaño se puede determinar el grado en el que el casco está afectado. De tres a diez centímetros de diámetro se consideran de gran tamaño. Estas am-

pollas nos indican que las capas del laminado afectadas son bastante profundas, obligando a realizar un tratamiento completo que elimine el antifouling, el gel coat y varias ca-pas de fibra de vidrio para llegar a la raíz del problema. En estos casos, siempre que las ampollas sean generalizadas por todo el casco, se procede al chorreo completo de la obra viva (con materiales abrasivos como silicato de aluminio o granallas vegetales), quitando las capas afectadas hasta su saneamiento completo. Tras el chorreo, se debe llevar a cabo un seguimiento permanente del secado del casco, evitando al máximo la humedad ambiente y los lavados con agua a presión.

Una vez seco el casco se procede al tratamiento que se reali-za a base de imprimaciones de epoxi de alto espesor y poste-rior masillado también con masillas de epoxi, volviendo a dar una forma fina al casco y finalizando con varias capas más de imprimación de epoxi antes de aplicar el antifouling. En algu-nos casos, en el que se han tenido que quitar varias capas de fibra y en el que el casco puede haber quedado debilitado, será necesario volver a laminar con tejidos de fibra de vidrio para reforzar la estructura antes de proceder al tratamiento anteriormente descrito.

Las ampollas de tamaño medio, de uno a tres centímetros de diámetro, indican que las capas afectadas son más su-perficiales y se tratan de forma muy similar a las de gran ta-maño, aunque el proceso de secado se reduce bastante. En algunos casos será suficiente con la eliminación de las capas de antifouling y gel coat. Al tener que quitar menos espesor, se puede optar por el lijado de dichas capas, minimizando la necesidad de remasillar todo el casco y reduciendo el coste del tratamiento.

Las ampollas pequeñas, de menos de un centímetro de diá-metro, indican un principio de problema, es decir, se ven afectadas las capas más superficiales del casco. En algunos

casos, al pinchar estas ampollas no se aprecia el olor carac-terístico avinagrado del líquido acumulado en su interior. Estas ampollas se deben marcar lo antes posible al sacar el barco del agua ya que tienden a desaparecer rápidamente al secarse el casco. Su desaparición no significa que no exista el problema, ya que al volver a hidratarse, reaparecen. Para tratar estas ampollas, es recomendable realizar unas catas en varias zonas del casco antes de proceder al chorreo o lijado y así determinar el grado de hidrólisis del casco (las catas también se pueden realizar con los otros tipos de am-pollas, aunque son casos más evidentes y fáciles de determi-nar). En el caso de que las ampollas sean muy superficiales, suele ser suficiente con pinchar y purgar todas las ampollas, decapar el antifouling y proceder a un lijado suave del gel coat. Se debe observar el grado de humedad del casco y su evolución. Una vez seco o en condiciones óptimas para el tratamiento, se aplicará un tratamiento preventivo a base de imprimaciones de epoxi y es fundamental llevar un segui-miento del casco en las siguientes varadas para observar su posible reproducción.

Visible hydrolysis comes in forms of blisters that appear below the waterline and depending on their size it can be determined to what extent the hull has been affected. From three to ten centimeters in diameter, these are considered

as being large. These blisters indicate that the layers of the laminate affected are quite deep; making it necessary for a complete treatment to remove the antifouling, the gel coat and several layers of fiberglass to get to the root of the prob-lem. In these cases, whenever the blisters are widespread, the next procedure is to blast the complete hull (with abra-sive materials such as aluminum silicate or vegetable gran-ules), removing the affected layers to achieve a complete sanitation. After blasting, an ongoing monitoring of the drying out process must be conducted, avoiding to the max-imum humid atmospheres and pressurized wash downs.

Once the hull is dry, the treatment can proceed by applying very thick epoxy primers and subsequently also with epoxy paste, to give back a fine coat to the hull, finalizing with several more layers of epoxy before applying the antifoul-ing. In some cases where various layers of fiber have been removed and maybe the hull has become weakened, it will be necessary to laminate again with fiberglass material to reinforce the structure prior to proceed with the treatment mentioned above.

Medium sized blisters, of one to three centimeters in diame-ter, indicate that the layers affected are more superficial and they are treated very similarly to the larger ones, although the drying process is greatly reduced. In some cases it is just sufficient to eliminate the layers of antifouling and gel coat. Not having to remove so much thickness, one can choose to sand these layers, minimizing the need to redo the entire hull and reduce the cost of the treatment.

Small blisters, less than one centimeter in diameter, indicate the beginning of this problem, that’s to say, only the super-ficial layers of the hull are affected. In some cases, when piercing these blisters the characteristic smell of sour fluid

accumulated in the interior can go undetected. These blis-ters should be marked as soon as the boat is taken out of the water as they tend to disappear quickly as the hull dries out. Their disappearance does not mean that there is not a problem, because as soon as it is hydrated again, they reap-pear. To treat these blisters, it is advisable to make tests in various areas of the hull before proceeding to blast or sand and that way determine the degree of hydrolysis of the hull (the tests can also be made with the other types of blisters, although they are cases more evident and easier to deter-mine). In the event that the blisters are very superficial, usu-ally it is enough to puncture and drain all of them, strip down the antifouling and proceed with a light sanding of the gel coat. The degree of moisture in the hull should be observed as well as its evolution. Once it is dry or in optimum condi-tions the preventive treatment can be applied with epoxy primers but afterwards it is essential to keep monitoring the hull every time it is taken out of the water to observe possi-ble recurrence.

Marina Greenwich along with Grupo Collados -a company with a long standing record in the gastronomic field, backed by various awards such as la Marmita de Oro and the Premio Club Gourmet- are the new persons responsible for this adventure, they will be maintaining its tradi-tional cuisine together with the splendid views overlooking the boats, but there will be changes in the installations and décor.

uNa temporada repleta de victoriasEl equipo de motos de agua de Marina Greenwich ha cosechado

en 2014 unos resultados extraordinarios. En Offshore F1,

Enrique García ha logrado el segundo puesto del campeonato

de España y el tercero en el campeonato de Europa. En

Offshore F2, Alberto Ríos ha ganado el campeonato de España,

mientras que Sergio y David Rodríguez de Arellano han

ocupado el segundo y tercer puestos respectivamente. Este

último ha ganado además la Copa del Rey en esta categoría

y el campeonato de España en la categoría Rallyjet F2, en

la que Alberto Ríos ha logrado el tercer lugar y ha ganado la

Copa del Rey. Al cierre de esta edición el equipo partía rumbo

a Guadalupe para disputar en abril el Campeonato del Mundo.

Esperamos que este año la buena racha continúe.

outstanding results in 2014. In Offshore F1, Enrique

García has obtained second place in the championship

of Spain and third place in the European championship.

In Offshore F2, Alberto Ríos has won the championship
