DIn the first quarter of 2007, we experienced the vigor of agribusiness and the
amazing entrepreneurial capacity and resilience of our entrepreneurs.
Driven by the US, and also global, decision to use bio-energy as a partial
replacement to fossil fuels, agribusiness came back to life. Prices of commodities
recovered significantly and agriculture regained trust and prosperity.
Most agribusinesses, particularly those linked to exports, are having to make
adjustment to face the difficulties the market is going through at the moment, but
despite the hurdles, Brazil is soon to be the largest world producer of food and bio-
energy.
For all that, I am very optimistic about 2007, especially because 2006 was a
difficult year for agribusiness which endured high costs, low investment levels and
an unfavorable exchange rate. However, there has been some quantitative and
qualitative growth. Looking towards the future, I am firmly convinced that we have
a structured plan of action as well as commitment and determination to seek for
sustainable growth which will send us on a journey to the Age of Prosperity.
Together with growth, we will continue to focus on safety, quality and our respect
for people and the environment — values that are absolutely crucial for the
business — which was clearly demonstrated in the recently published Social
Statement for 2006.
We would like to invite you, our reader and friend, to join us at FMC in our pursuit
for a future of sustainable economic, social and environmental growth.
Let's get to work!!! Success and trust, because “the best is yet to come”!! And, if
you can dream, you can make it happen. After all, you are great.

The beauty of a gestureWe believe that it is timely to remind you in this edition that
there is beauty in everything that we do in an ethical way,
whether it is due to the duty we feel towards our conscious-
ness or because of a commitment we have taken on with
sustainability. What is important is not to be indifferent.
Small attitudes can generate huge consequences and help us
have an ethical behavior in life. Everything depends on the
way we react to facts. There is a creating force contained in
everything that we are and do, by means of which we can
give way to grandiose works of art.
To take a stance, attempting to interfere in things and change
their direction is a way man has to create and to become
strengthened. A simple gesture is enough to make us bigger
and better people.
May the reading of FMC Square on the issue of Social and
Environmental Responsibility allow the reader to see the
beauty where there is always room for one more gesture.
Responsabilidade Social e Ambiental possa levar o leitor a

Acompanhar com atenção quaisquer mudanças nas populações de plantas daninhas presentes na lavoura;
Monitorar a população de plantas daninhas e o início do aparecimento da resistência;
Arrancar e destruir plantas suspeitas de resistência;
Praticar rotação de culturas, já que essa prática favorece a alternância de herbicidas a utilizar na área;
Rotacionar os herbicidas, evitando utilizar, por mais de duas ocasiões consecutivas, produtos que apresen-tem o mesmo mecanismo de ação;
Utilizar associação de herbicidas com diferentes mecanismos de ação ou fazer aplicações seqüenciais dos mesmos;
Usar de forma intensiva o manejo integrado de plantas daninhas, principalmente quando houver constatação de escapes no controle químico de determinada espécie;
Realizar aplicações seqüenciais de herbicidas com diferentes mecanismos de ação;
Evitar que plantas resistentes ou suspeitas produzam sementes;

A nicelooking problem
espite the fact that sometimes they can be beautiful, like the
case of Ipomoea, weeds are a true headache for agriculture Dproduction and they can be one of the most serious
economic problems of soybean growers. Large weed infestations can
cause severe losses to those crops. A lot has been done to control
this evil weed and the use of herbicide is the most common method
adopted by growers to promote a faster and more efficient control
strategy, only compared to the use of mechanical practices.
Weed control became easier because some soybean cultivars are
resistant to glyfosate. It is less costly and the new option is also more
flexible and more efficient when it comes to eliminating weeds. By
the new method, the development stage of the weed comes second
when compared to the possible impact caused to the yield of grains.
However, these methods must be carefully used in order to avoid
yield losses to the crop when the controls are applied too late after
the emergence of the beans or the selection of tolerant weed species
or herbicide resistant weeds.
In the case of the GMO soybean, some aspects about the dynamics
of the population of weeds and the possibility of selecting species
that are tolerant and resistant to glyfosate were not completely
anticipated. The types of management and herbicides used in a
certain area can cause changes in the type and number of species
that are part of the local population. This can be explained by the fact
that herbicides are not capable of equally controlling all the different
species in a given population. As a result, some of them grow even
more. Under these circumstances, low occurrence weeds in an area
can multiply and become a serious problem to growers.
That occurs because the herbicide is chemical substance capable of
selecting populations of plants. As such, its continuous use in the
same area can cause the appearance of weeds that are both tolerant
and resistant to the herbicide. In the case of soybeans from the
South of Brazil, mainly from Rio Grande do Sul, the use of glyfosate
for the past eight years provoked the selection of species that have
always been tolerant or hard to control, such as tropical Mexican
clover (Richardia brasiliensis); morning glory (Ipomoea sp.); prickly
sida (Sida rhombifolia); day flower (Commelina sp.) and Rhodes
grass (Chloris sp.). An increased dose of the herbicide or its
application during the initial stages of weed develpment, improve the
control of some of these species. However, in most cases it may be
necessary to have na association of herbicides to obtain a more
efficient control.
Herbicide weed resistance is the natural and inherited capacity of
some biotypes, within a certain population of weeds that can survive
and reproduce after exposure to a dose of herbicide which would be
lethal to another population of the species. This is true of any
herbicide, although the appearance of resistant cases varies in terms
of frequency and mechanisms.
Until 2003, the cases of weed resistance in soybean crops, were
restricted to ALS enzime(acetolactate sintase) inhibiting herbicides
and ACCase enzime (acetyl CoA carbozilase) inhibitors. In 2004,
there were reported cases of resistance to Protox inhibiting
herbicides in the state of Paraná. More recently, in areas were
glyfosate is commonly used, there have been cases where other
biotypes were identified: Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum)

(Photo 1); horsewee (Conyza bonariensis and Conyza canadensis)
(Photo 2); and fireplant (Euphorbia heterophylla), all resistant to the
herbicide. In the laboratory, 2, 4, 6 and 8 l/ha-1 of glyfosate was
sprayed on the sensitive and resistant horseweed biotypes
(Photo 3). The sensitive biotype died with the lower dose or with the
recommended dose of the herbicide; whereas the resistant biotype
was not controlled even with a dose higher that 8 l/ha-1.
Therefore, it is known that resistance is a natural phenomenon that
will manifest itself whenever the same herbicide or herbicides with
the same modes of action are used repeatedly of in abundance,
putting more pressure on the selection. It is also important to
mention that there is no transference of genes. The plant itself
already has these genes which are manifested because of the
selection pressure caused by the herbicide.
Effects of weeds
Weeds reduce yield because of the direct and indirect effects
they have over the growth of crops. Direct effects can be
associated to the competition for the limited environment
resources, whereas indirect effects include mainly problems
at harvest and contamination of the grains by seeds and
other materials derived from the weeds. There is no doubt
that the effects of weeds on soybean crops represent the
major cause of yield reduction.
See graphic
Reducing resistanceSome preventive actions can be adopted to try to minimize the
development of weed resistance to herbicides, such as:
Attentively follow any chances in the populations of weeds in the
crop;
Monitor the population of weeds and the early stages of
resistance;
Remove and destroy all weeds likely to resist;
Rotation of cultures - this practice allows you to alternate
herbicides to be used in a given area;
Rotate herbicides to avoid using the same mode of action on two
consecutive occasions;
Use a mix of the herbicide with different modes of action or apply
a sequential of the same;
Make intensive use of weeds integrated management,
particularly when there is evidence of gaps in the chemical control
of certain species;
Apply herbicides with different modes of action;
Prevent resistant or suspicious weeds to produce seeds;
Use practices to exhaust the seed bank.
When adopting chemical control to manage resistant species, it is
crucial to have complete knowledge of the herbicides mechanisms of
action. In cases where populations of horseweed are resistant to
glyfosate herbicide, the alternative to control these populations
must contemplate the use of sidress in the winter time and also the
use, in soybean pre-sowing, of herbicides associated with glyfosate,
sprayed all at once or in sequence before the sowing of the crop.
The adoption of such practices prevents problems such as the ones
illustrated on Photos 4 and 5.
Some criteria must be taken into account when choosing the
association of herbicides: different modes of action, similar
persistence and control spectrum. Otherwise, resistance might
!
!
!!
!
!
!
!!!
eventually be selected, regardless of the different action
mechanisms of herbicides applied in the area.
In the case of GMO soybean, the elements related to resistance
prevention were not considered relevant, because glyfosate is a low
risk product to the selection of resistant biotypes due to its own
characteristics.
Last but not least, if glyfosate resistance is found even in GMO
soybean crops, one more herbicide must be added to the list of
applications or management of the vegetation in these areas must
be replaced by less efficient and more costly management and
control methods. These facts illustrate the cost of resistance to
producers.

espite the fact that in the last decade genetically modified
cultures have registered a growth in planted area in the
more than 20 countries where this type of plantation Dexists, Brazil, albeit occupying the third place in the production of
GMOs with 11,5% of the world's production still faces a huge
challenge ahead when it comes to cotton crops: controlling the
occurrence of pests such as the boll weevil, mainly, besides the
bedbugs, mites and Spodopteras as well. These insects should
lead to greater attention to the plantation of transgenic cotton
(BT1), released for plantation in Brazil, as they are not affected by
this technology and simply respond to chemical controls in this
type of cotton. This is a fact, there is no avoiding it. It is the best
way to make full use of transgenic production and face up to the
problem, beginning with an understanding of the meanders of this
issue.
The BT1 technology, by means of the introduction of gene in the
plant, makes it toxic to caterpillars that feed on it, such as the
cotton moth (Alabama argillacea), the apple worms (Heliothis
virescens) and the pink caterpillar (Pectinophora gossypiella), also
presenting an effect in the control of plusias. Nevertheless, pests
with different eating habits compared to the caterpillars are not
controlled by this technology and, free from chemical control, will
tend to propagate, especially if we consider the characteristics of
countries with tropical climates such as Brazil. In this case, the
change tends to be more accentuated for the following reasons:
high temperatures and moisture, speed and means of reproducti
on of the pests, different spectrum of pests (presence of the boll
weevil), continuity of the crop (small cotton harvest) and the
proximity of other crops, soybeans for example, from which the
bedbugs can migrate.
Presently, the spectrum of pests for the cotton crop also
encompasses aphids (Aphis gossypii), thrips (Frankliniela
williamsi), lesser cornstalk borer (Elasmopalpus lignosellus), root
borer (Eutinobrothus brasilienses), black cutworm (Agrotis
ipsilon), Spodoptera worm, white mite (Polyphagotarsonemus
latus) and the phytophagous mite (Tetranychus urticae), begbugs
(Horcias nobilellus; Dysdercus sp.; Nezara viridula; Piezodorus
guildinii; Euschistus heros) and the cotton boll weevil (Anthono-
mus grandis), the main pest in Brazil.
Although we cannot as yet speak about a change in the pest
spectrum with the advent of transgenic cotton (BT1) as this is the
most recent technology in Brazil, a diversity of factors, such as
climate, plant physiology, for example, may influence the behavior
of pests. It is very probable that beginning with the 06/07 harvest
we will have some answers regarding this issue and, most
certainly, there will have to be a more in-depth research on their
behavior of pests in genetically modified cotton, among which, as
has been mentioned previously, are the boll weevil, bedbugs and
mites, to which the plant presents no resistance.

"... é preciso vencer este velho inimigo do algodoeiro, o bicudo."
The North American experience shows us that, even in the XXI Century
and with the advances in biotechnology in the last 30 years in which
the first biological research was carried out in that country, it is
necessary to overcome this old cotton enemy, the boll weevil. An insect
originating in Mexico and collected for the very first time by French
entomologists in the State of Vera Cruz, at the beginning of the 1830's,
the boll weevil was linked to the cotton planted for the very first time in
1855, and subsequently in the United States in 1892.
With the increase of areas cultivated with transgenic plants and
consequently a reduction in the use of insecticides to control
caterpillars, pests deemed to be secondary, such as bedbugs and the
white fly, now show a trend to become ever present, besides the
increase in problems with the boll weevil and aphids, increasing their
potential for damage. Because of this, in the United States, initially the
attempt is made to eliminate the greatest problem, that is to say, the
boll weevil, and only then do they work on biotechnology, introducing
resistance in plants to caterpillars already mentioned, to truly be able
to make full use of transgenic plants. In our reality, it would be
absolutely necessary to reduce the pressure of the boll weevil in the
cotton producing regions, to be able to benefit from the varieties
resistant to caterpillars where they pose a problem, as in many regions
the cost of controlling such caterpillars does not make biotechnology
feasible, that is to say, the BT technology is too costly compared to the
cost of controlling these worms.
To put it differently, with the BT1 cotton or another type of genetically
modified organism, the change regarding the use of products used in
the cotton crops, which previously, besides controlling caterpillars also
controlled the boll weevil, leads to a tendency of an increase in this
pest, if other measures are not adopted for their suppression.
Although it is too early to speak about lack of control, it is important to
adopt all possible measures not to allow a resistance to arise for BT
cotton earthworms. The adoption of refuge areas, for example, is
crucial, and should be respected according to the future stance
adopted for research and official agencies. This care is necessary when
dealing with plantations close to the cerrado, an alternative for the boll
weevil, especially between harvests, when there is no food and the
insect seeks this type of vegetation to be able to survive.
At the beginning of this year, for example, the first boll weevil foci in
cotton have already been detected in municipalities in the Southern
region of Mato Grosso, such as Itiquira, Rondonópolis, Campo Verde,
Primavera do Leste and Serra da Petrovina, among others. We need to
be alert and do everything within our reach to reduce the initial
pressure of this pest, as the lack of management of the boll weevil is
one of the main factors aggravating the continuity of cotton plantation
in the region.

he confrontation between producers and the insects that attack
soybean, especially caterpillars, has not been an easy one. In Tthis battle, research and new technologies offered in the market
have marked a strong presence in the history that tells about the
evolution of the handling of caterpillars. However, innumerable insects
have adapted to this culture, making use of it for their survival, be it in
the form of food, be it in the form of a substrate for reproduction. Some
have adapted since its introduction in the country more than 40 years
ago, which is the case of the velvet bean caterpillar (Anticarsia
gemmatalis) highlighted in research on the enemies of soybeans due to
its importance, its attacks in the plantations throughout Brazil, with the
greatest damage and losses taking place in the Southern region of
Brazil.
Up to 1960, the soybean cultivars used by the farmers had extremely
long cycles, going beyond seven months of plantation, the growth was
indeterminate, they had large and decumbent leaves and, on fertile
soils, drooped easily. These factors allowed for the “development of
tools” for the emergence of soybean, with some market at the
beginning of the 1970's, when several “emerging” models were being
marketed.
At that time, the research models determined the occurrence of four to
six generations of velvet bean caterpillars during the crop cycle, being
that as of the second (in the case of four generations) or the third (in
the case of six generations), the defoliation attained considerable levels
and, when these infestations took place during floration the loss was
total. As of the floration there would be an incidence, but the damages
tended to be less, due to the drop in temperature and the occurrence of
a fungal infection, the green muscardine, caused by the fungus
Nomuraea rileyi.
The culture occupied small areas per property and had as the main goal
to produce green mass for animal forage and grains to formulate animal
feed, especially for swine. Marketing of grains was secondary.
Beginning in the 1970's (1970-79) there was an enormous expansion of
cultivated area with that leguminous plant, largely due to the upsurge
of cultivars with a specific growth and a shorter cycle; those cultivars
were developed by researchers in federal and state institutions located
in Rio Grande do Sul. The Agronomic Institute of the South (IAS) from
the Ministry of Agriculture and the Institute of Agronomic Research
(IPAGRO) from the Agriculture Secretariat from Rio Grande do Sul
launched several cultivars, with the possibility of having a mechanical
harvest, which contributed greatly to the expansion of cultivated areas.
Mechanized harvests favored these new cultivars and the marketing of
grains, which then became the first choice of producers, they changed
the means of controlling the soybean pests that had been used up to
that time.
At that time, a phytosanitary calendar was being used, through which,
between Christmas and New Year, the first application of defensives was
carried out, generally with a base of methylparatione plus DDT, or
based on chlorated camphene, formulations with a long residual power;
the second application was generally carried out at the end of January,
and the third at the end of February. Beginning in March, with the drop
in temperature and the presence of the muscardine fungus, an agent of
natural biological control, there was rarely the need to carry out one
more application with pesticides to control caterpillars.
The small plantations were kept free from invaders, by means of a
mechanical control (weeding), making it difficult for the natural
enemies of the velvet bean caterpillar and other pests of that culture to
survive. Furthermore, this facilitated the resurgence of caterpillar
attacks.
Battle without a truceThe evolution in pest management insoybeans is a history marked by a constantstruggle against these enemies

was a resurgence of caterpillars, not only for soybean and the Plusiinae
as well, especially the P. includens, which, beginning with floration,
have been detected on the soybean plantations, with densities of 10 to
40% of the total number of caterpillars sampled in the ground cloth.
The Plusiinae caterpillars, very generally, demand more active
ingredient per unit of area than the velvet bean caterpillars, as they are
less susceptible to pesticides.
The velvet bean caterpillar attacks the upper part of the soybean plant
and this can easily be seen by the farmer, while the Plusiinae occurs in
the middle third of the plant and is only noticed when it has already
caused damage. As the transgenic soybean culture takes place
practically with the absence of invaders, the natural enemies of the
Plusiinae caterpillars become scarce and even absent on plantations,
which has facilitated the occurrence of outbreaks of these caterpillars.
The application of syrups with medium and low volumes have brought
about the situation of little or no efficacy of the chemical control
whatsoever, which leads producers to accusing pesticides of being
inefficient. In soybean with more than one meter of height and quite a
bit of density, there is almost no penetration of the syrup inside the
canopy and, as a result, what is observed is the absence of pests that
occur there. Tests have indicated that only the application with syrups
with 150 liters or more per hectare have been efficient, regardless of
the chemical ingredient indicated for the control of the pest in question.
Another situation verified more recently is the occurrence of outbreaks
of the velvet bean caterpillar attacking the beans or pods under
formation, with almost no harm to the leaves. This fact is only noticed
by the producer at the moment of harvesting, when he will be
astounded by the very small amount of pods existing in the plants. This
situation has been verified in cultivations in which there are at least two
harvests, where there has been chemical control for diseases at the end
of the cycle, as of floration. The fungicides used with this aim are
efficient controllers of the green muscardine fungus, Nomuraea rileyi, a
natural biological control agent for the velvet bean caterpillar.
The use of Baculovirus anticarsia for the control of the velvet bean
caterpillar in transgenic plantations has worked in the same way as in
the conventional crops regarding efficacy; the problem is that the
permanence if the virus on the crop fields is more difficult, as the velvet
bean generations are stagnant and the lack of cross generations
impedes the permanence of this biological control agent in agriculture.
In the 2006/2007 harvest the resurgence of the velvet bean caterpillar
attacking the forming pods became a problem in many plantations,
during the second fortnight in February of 2007, especially due to the
height of the plants, the closed canopy (great green mass) and
meteorological factors favorable to the crops. Chemical control has
worked irregularly, especially in those areas with a low volume of syrup
(less than 120 liters/ha) and land application. The occurrence of green
muscardine (natural biological control agent) has also been irregular,
and while producers no longer have problems with the velvet been
caterpillar at the end of the cycle, others are complaining that they
cannot control them even with high doses of pesticides. The
development of the soybean plant, with heights greater than 120 cm
and closed canopy prevent a good distribution of the insecticide syrup,
making control difficult and leading producers to despair.
With the expansion of cultivated area and the reduction of spacing
between the soybean rows, the mechanical control of the invading
pests became problematic. Consequently, research began to see
just how much competition the soybean culture could withstand
without a significant reduction in production and, among the
factors surveyed, was the speed with which soybean covered the
land, hampering the development of invaders, and this was
important for the selection of herbicides that were selective for the
crop. These herbicides became fundamental, as they depended on
the phenological phase of invaders and the weather conditions to
have any efficacy. The survival of some invading plants, under the
coverage of the soybean plants, allowed for the presence and
survival of natural enemies of the velvet bean caterpillar.
New sampling methodology
As of 1975, with the setting up of the National Center for Soybean
Research, research activities in the crops were coordinated, and at
that point a management program was created for soybean pests,
with an emphasis on the caterpillar. An assessment was carried
out, through a ground cloth, in terms of the levels of infestation
and indicating when the time had come to make the decision to
use chemical controls.
This data became evermore necessary, considering that new
cultivars, with a specific growth and a shorter cycle, could not bear
the “phytosanitary calendar” that had been used up to that time.
It became established that, as of an average density of 40
caterpillars for two meter of line and 30% of defoliation in the
vegetative phase, or 15% in the reproductive phase, the chemical
control would become viable and be worthwhile economically. This
program is being used officially up to present.
Genetic improvement developed soybean cultivars with smaller
and erect leaves and with the same photosynthesis activity, more
precocious plants that would translate into less space between the
rows and plant density per area. These great strides in research,
on the other hand, came into clash with the pest management
program being used for soybean, as if the decision were made
when the defoliation level was reached or caterpillar density was
attained, there would be no more soybeans in the plantation to
protect. Defoliation at the levels preached by the program, on the
other hand, allowed for the resurgence of the remaining invaders,
causing greater damage to the crops.
In 1987, the author of this article presented a modification of the
infestation levels, in which the caterpillar density for the decision
making took into account the size of the plant, the presence of
aggressive invaders (Digitarius sanguinalis, Brachiaria
plantaginea, Echinochloa crusgalli and other similar ones) and the
weather conditions (during the rainy periods the invaders were the
problem, and in dry periods, caterpillars stood out). New
caterpillar densities were established for the decision making
process, in accordance to Table 1. Private technical assistance
immediately began to use these new parameters, while the official
extension services ignored them, at least partially.

The occurrence of other species of defoliating caterpillars,
especially the Plusiinae, with an emphasis on the Rachiplusia nu,
and the Pseudoplusia includens, with a reduction in the cultivation
of flax and the cultivation of forage legumes, from winter/spring,
with clovers and alfalfa, became a minor problem in cultivations of
conventional soybean. Sporadically they would attain population

chemical control.

Ocorr nc a o Ceadoê i n rr

There are several species of pests that attack the soybean crops and
among these are the defoliating caterpillars that have increased
substantially in importance and population in the last few years,
causing serious damage to soybean producers and considerably
burdening the crop production system.
The species which occur the most are the velvet bean caterpillar
(Anticarsia gemmatalis), the soybean looper (Pseudoplusia includens
and Trichoplusia nii), Spodoptera eridania and Spodoptera cosmioides,
Pyralid moths (Omiodes indicata) and, recently, the cotton caterpillar
(Heliothis virescens), that has migrated to the soybean crop.
Although they are defoliating, each species has different habits and
behaviors, and by getting to know and follow-up on their different
behaviors, we can better position controls, our choice of insecticides,
the moment of application and the volume of juice.
The infestation of caterpillars in the crop begins with the arrival of the
butterflies, that immediately after mating beginning laying their eggs.
In three days on the average, there is the hatching of eggs, giving way
to the caterpillar infestation, which if uncontrolled may give rise to
considerable damage, ranging all the way from a reduction of the
photosynthetic area to an attack to the pods. Presently it is of the
utmost importance to identify the adult phase in each caterpillar
species, with the aim of following-up on the moment of arrival of the
insect, and through a monitoring to accompany the evolution of the
caterpillars through the crops' cycle.
Formerly, the species that most occurred in the crop was the velvet
bean caterpillar (Anticarsia gemmatalis), that in present days is
deemed to be of lesser importance compared to other species which
are more difficult to control, such as the soybean looper.
The soybean caterpillar is an extremely voracious species that because
of its habits begins feeding from the top of the plant descending to the
lower thirds; as a consequence they become more exposed, which
facilitates their control.
The soybean looper are so called because they move ahead as if they
were measuring a hand breadth. They do not feed on nervures, an
organ used greatly in the translocation of several groups of
insecticides. The locate themselves preferentially in a more protected
region (third half of plants), where there is less penetration of the juice
in the application of insecticides due to the architecture itself of a
soybean, and these are deemed to be difficult to control.
Occurrence in the Cerrado
Damages observed due to the attack of caterpillars in the
Cerrado region
1- Reduction of the photosynthesis area;
2- Premature dropping of leaves (soybean looper);
3- Damages to the pods attacked;
4- Reduction in grain size;
5- Drop in production.
Difference in behavior of caterpillars
Soybean caterpillar
- More exposed
- Feed from top to bottom
- Feed from nervures
- Greater ease of contamination
Soybean looper
- Less exposed
- Locate themselves in the third half
- Feed from the bottom to the top
- Do not feed on the nervures
- Present resistance to traditional insecticides
- Greater difficulty in contamination by insecticides

Another species of caterpillars that has been causing significant
damages to soybean producers in the region of the Cerrado are the
Spodopteras (Spodoptera eridania and Spodoptera cosmioides).
These are polyfagous insects that attack several host species and
which presently have adapted to the soybean culture. Besides the
habit of defoliation, they also feed from the pods, damaging the
grains and facilitating the entrance of microorganisms the latter. As
the egg laying in these species generally have between 200 and 300
eggs and as they do not have cannibal habits, they can speedily
build up enormous populations, causing serious damage,
considering that they generally occur when the soybean plant is in
its reproductive phase.
Another situation of great concern is the occurrence of Pyralid
moths (Omiodes indicata), that have the characteristic of weaving a
web to protect themselves, by bringing together parts of the leaf
(justifying their common name) or by joining together leaves.
Under these conditions it becomes very difficult to control them, as
they cautiously remain in a highly protected environment,
hampering contact with insecticides, and occurring preferentially in
the reproductive phase. Damages caused by these species are a
reduction in the photosynthetic area, consequently that used for
feeding and a premature dropping of leaves, anticipating the crops'
cycle.
Among all of the species that take place in a crop, the one that has
presented the greatest change in behavior is the tobacco budworm,
or cotton worm (Heliothis virescens), which presently has adapted
to the soybean crops in several regions of Brazil, feeding
preferentially from the pods.
Factors favoring the substantial increase in the population of such
caterpillars are the continuous and necessary use of different
fungicides, with the goal of primarily controlling the Asian soybean
rust that also acts on a biological agent that occurs naturally
(Nomuraea rileyi) and is very efficient in the control of caterpillars,
associated to the non-discriminate use of non-selective insecticides in
the initial stages of the crop development.
With the aim of reducing the population of these caterpillars and
consequently the damages caused by them, it becomes necessary to
carefully monitor these insects, following-up on the arrival of butterflies,
as well as the evolution of the caterpillar, through the beat cloth method.
These measures can help the positioning of insects, as the moment of
application, the volume of juice and the performance of the different
chemical groups.
Success in the control of defoliating caterpillars
1 - Monitoring the arrival of butterflies (visual);
2 - Identification of species;
3 - Follow-up on the development of caterpillars (beat cloth method);
4 - Knowledge of the insect's behavior;
5 - Feeding habits (limbo, pods, nervures);
6 - Level of economic damage or loss;
7 - Location in the plant coverage;
8 - Choice of insecticides:
- site of action;
- selectivity to natural enemies;
9 - Volume of the juice.

fter the official launch of the “Pragas do Algodoeiro” ("Pests of
Cotton”) in August of 2006, during the Brazilian Congress on
Cotton, in Uberlândia - MG, it will be evermore simple for Aprofessionals involved in the cotton cultures to identify which are the
pests that relate to the damage found, or which is the damage these
pests can cause, helping to understand the biological cycle, the periods
of occurrence and the climatic conditions that favor their multiplication.
“This will doubtlessly be an important tool within the process”,
assesses the creator of the manual, technical consultant Paulo Edimar
Saran, from BBC (Brazil Business Consultoria), who decided to
elaborate this guide based on his own difficulties in recompiling visual
information associated to the descriptions of such pests.
The manual is the result of joining together the photographic material
collected by the consultant during his work, with a simple text which is
easy to understand. The information was extracted from well-known
literature and revised by entomologist Dr. Walter Jorge dos Santos.
Sponsored by FMC Agricultural Products, this 300-page manual will be
given out free of charge to those that are interested in it, and brings
over 250 photos of adults, laying, nymphae, larvae, pupas, attack
symptoms and describes the biology, the cycle and the damages
caused by these insects.
Certamente o manual
será uma importante ferramenta para auxiliá-los.
What led you to drafting the manual on pests?
The idea arose approximately six years ago, when I was having hard
time recompiling visual information associated to the description of the
pests, to help me identify them at the diverse stages, anticipating their
potential to cause damage. An example of this difficulty in identificati-
on is butterflies and their laying.
Why did you decide to create a specific manual for cotton
pests?
Because, in the cotton crop, many things happen during the season.
Among the difficulties are the pest complex which attack the culture
and merit being highlighted due to their diversity, not only in quantity,
but also in variation of attack symptoms.
The goal was to offer technical support to newly arrived professionals
who intend to begin their activities as “technical field samplers” and
recycle professionals deemed to be veterans in sampling activities.
There is no doubt that the manual will be an important tool for these
professionals.

Which are some of the difficulties in drafting a manual on
pests?
One of the difficulties is to ensure that the entire collection of photos of
the insects and their damages exactly represent the situations detected
in the field, reflecting them as naturally as possible, in the true colors
and in all of the stage variations, without touch ups and the way the
people who will be consulting this manual (and I hope there will be
many) truly identify them.
Many pests rake place in specific periods or in distinct regions, however,
in some cases, pests with a generalized occurrence causes different
damages in different regions, as is the case with Spodoptera frugiper-
da. Because of this all of the attack symptoms, whether common or
uncommon for some regions, have been included. To recompile such
information was also one of the great difficulties in elaborating this
manual.
Was there any incentive from the stakeholders?
Yes, the incentive came in the form of requests and suggestions and in
the process of wishing to comply to the requests and heed the
suggestions, I enhanced the needs of those who truly need this
information.
How were you able to record so many images on the topic of
cotton pests?
My work involves visits to plantations or crops, in all of their
phases, all the way from the implementation to the harvest and in
all of the cotton regions of Brazil. I have always been very
passionate about photography, especially the “macro” ones, as I
have always likes insects, therefore, I decided to put all of this
together. My photo collection nowadays has approximately 22.000
shots.
Besides this manual, do you intend to draft others?
Yes. Cotton crops are frequently attacked by secondary pests,
which I consider to be as important as the main ones, not from the
economic viewpoint, but from the technical one. There exists the
need also to identify the more common beneficial insects in Brazil in
their several phases (mummies, egg bags, pupas, laying),
oftentimes responsible for the control of some pest infestations,
and that with the use of varieties of GMO's are becoming evermore
important within the process of handling cotton crops.
Besides the insects, there are the diseases which need to be known
in all of their phases of evolution of infections, mainly as regards

the initial symptoms — there are symptoms caused by chemical injury
(insecticides, fungicides and herbicides) or mechanical injury (coverage,
hail, electrical discharges, etc.) and there are symptoms provoked by
nutritional deficiencies.
All of this information will be presented in the coming harvests and in the
format of manuals: Manual of beneficial insects for cotton crops; Manual
of secondary pests in cotton; Manual of diseases in cotton, and Manual to
identify the damages, injuries and deficiencies of the cotton crop.
How do you evaluate the samplers for the process of cotton
culture in Brazil?
Due to the large number of insects that attack crops, due to the large
number of pathogens infecting the culture and due to the enormous
diversity of operations carried out during the entire cotton cycle, it
becomes extremely necessary to have the presence of a technical
professional, one that is trained, and identifies the insects and has deep
knowledge of the attack symptoms of pests and the pathogens of
infectious symptoms, synchronizing and attuned to the operational
needs of the culture. This professional, formerly called simply the “pest
specialist” is the one who nowadays takes on multiple and more
encompassing responsibilities and should be called “the technical field
sampler”.
What differentiates this manual from the others that
have been published?
As difficult as understanding the diversity and the simultaneous
occurrence of pests, and associating the damages found in
plants to the pests that occur, are the identifications, not only of
the pests in their most diverse stages of growth, but also the
damages caused in several parts of the plant, and this is where
the manual stands out, because of the diversity with which the
pests can be found, and the detail of the symptoms they cause,
in all of their phases of development and in all of the plant
structures.

According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the world population should reach 7,5 billion people in 2020, being that arable land will not increase, that is to say, it will remain 1,5 billion hectares, representing a decrease in productive area per person.

n any battle, those who win have the best strategy and, for
that, it is necessary to be well informed. In agriculture, this
means saying that it is necessary to have control over the Ibehavior of the “enemy” and the best control practices. In the case
of sugar cane, it is worthwhile recalling that although it is
necessary to know the exact context of this cultivation, in which
the exploration of broad areas and the opening of new frontiers is
a warning factor when it comes to the control of soil pests, that
attack this culture during its entire vegetative cycle (from the
planting of the seedpiece to harvesting), causing considerable
damage in all of the sugar cane regions throughout the country.
Damage occurs mainly in the roots, seedpiece and rootstocks,
with a greater incidence during the dry period, harming the root
system and, consequently decreasing the plant's capacity to
absorb water and nutrients. To further aggravate this situation,
the outlook of a reduction in productive area from 0,5 to 0,2
hectares per person up to 2020 (Box World Population) indicates
that pest and fungi control after the harvest and the thicket-
competition may turn out to be the only way out to manage losses
in agriculture, that may attain 15%.
In order to avoid such losses, the solution begins with a correct
identification of the pest. This being the case, it is very important
to carry out a mapping of such pests (nematoids, termites,
coleoptera and others) through field surveys to identify the
species, population levels and the damage. To complement this,
emphasis should be given to the need for a trained team to
constantly monitor the sugar plantations, thus facilitating the
decision making process.
Based on this information, it becomes possible to decide on the
most efficient control system. The adoption of a variety of
practices, by means of the Integrated Pest Control (IPC) has
proven that a biological, mechanical, cultural and chemical control
make it possible to attain excellent results. Whenever necessary,
the chemical method should be adopted as a complement for the
best control (Box Chemical control).
Best practicesThe history of soil pests in sugar cane is used to identify primary
nematoids, termites and migdolus (regionally localized infestati-
on). Presently, other pests — like some coleoptera —, which were
formerly secondary or even unimportant economically, have now
begun to cause considerable damage.
Due to the complexity of such pests, the harm they cause and
because of the physical-chemical characteristics of the products
registered for plantation, it becomes crucial to implement the best
control practices, which begin with control over the behavior of
such pests. All this means to say it is fundamental to recognize
when and how they attack the sugar cane plantation during its
entire vegetative cycle (12 to 14 months). Another factor that is
not less important is the man—machine—environment interaction.
Besides all of these factors, it is necessary to adopt precision
agriculture, in its fullest dimension. That is, to attain the target in a
precise manner, reaching ever higher performance levels and this
is the translation of what we define as being excellent pest control
practices.
The victory of strategyBest practices for soil pest control in sugar cane guarantee excellence in results
The correct sizing of the applying set and the resources available
can make a difference when it comes to the expected results, as,
depending on the target pest, the best way to position these
products in the soil can be determined.
In other words, success with this mode of control is only possible
when factors such as the commitment of people, safety of human
beings and the environment, knowledge of the economic
plantation, the target pest, knowledge of the products and the
application technology are broadly understood and under control.

he anxiety created with environmental changes and their
potential impacts on the life of the planet has never been so Tgreat. Equally of concern are the data on the human
development indices (income, education and health), which indicate
there is still enormous social inequality and a lagging behind in several
parts of the world. According to the French existentialist philosopher
Jean-Paul Sartre, man builds himself based on his plans and on the
responsibility he feels towards himself and others. This responsibility,
in his opinion, makes man feel he is in contact with the world that
surrounds him and he is touched by the problems of society, which
generates such anxiety that it will lead him to action, “seeking to
become useful for society”.
Whether this is or not the motivation behind the exercise of social
responsibility as a guiding principle for economic activity towards
sustainable development which gains force day after day in society, the
fact is that the anxiety grows daily, calling each of us more to action.
And this calling is not a recent one. In truth, the issue of Social
Responsibility in the business environment began to appear over
twenty years ago, remitting us to a historic retrospective which
explains and justifies just how urgent it is not to waste a single day
more in this quest.
In the 1980's, the world efforts toward development seemed to have
failed. Large areas of the globe were made up of stagnated economies
that were highly indebted. That decade became known as the “lost
decade”. Simultaneously, the environment was being poorly managed
and there was no proposal for a better management. Programs relating
to issues such as development and the environment, from the
viewpoint of the United Nations, did not seem to be very effective. As a
result of the crisis, intense debates took place among the
entrepreneurial, political and non-governmental arenas. In 1983, the
General Assembly of the United Nations approved resolutions which set
up a commission to define new trajectories, called the Worldwide
Commission on the Environment and Development. Two of the
Igualmente A
Sustainability,an invitation to actionBy exercising social responsibility, companies manage their businessescommitted to sustainable development
initiatives that arose from the work of the abovementioned commission
had great repercussion and a long lasting impact. One was the report
called Our Common Future, that launched the concept of Sustainable
Development, and the other was the decision to hold UNCTAD 92 or
ECO-92 — the International Conference on Social Sustainable
Development (see box page 30).
In their first manifestations, sustainable development was, in part, a
“green agenda”. In the mid 90's, accusations against companies on the
use of child labor, contamination of the space surrounding the
companies, massacre of unions and lack of concern with the
surrounding communities became evermore common. Opinion polls
showed that a series of scandals were of concern to consumers. The
most frequently mentioned aspects related to labor issues in
companies, their relationship with the communities and their
environmental treatment. Faced by this scenario, the perception came
about that the social side of sustainable development became an issue
that was as immediate and preeminent as the environmental side,
generating initiatives to integrate issues referring to the social
responsibility of companies in their business strategies and their day-
to-day activities.
A definition for a concept that would express corporate thought on this
issue was discussed broadly and there is agreement that Social
Responsibility is deemed to be a set of principles that guide the actions
and relationships of companies with their employees, suppliers,
consumers and community in which they live and work. It is a way of
running business that makes the company a partner and co-
responsible for social development. A socially responsible company is
one that has the ability to listen to the interests of the different
stakeholders (shareholders, employees, service renderers, vendors,
consumers, community, government, union and environment) and is
able to include them in the planning of activities, seeking to comply
with the demands of all groups, not merely shareholders and owners.
To sum up, the concept of social responsibility defines the way in which
the company deals with business and how it runs it. A committed
company will set forth strategies that are able to create economic
value, by means of enhancements in social and environmental
performance, not leaving aside ethical aspects and corporate
governance.

“Our Common Future” Report
This is the document drafted in 1987, as an initiative arising
from the work of the Worldwide Commission on the
Environment. This document, which launched the concept
and defended investments on behalf of Sustainable
Development, was conceived as a commitment towards
development, generating wealth for the Country, while at
the same time respecting people, present day and future
generations, based on social justice and the preservation of
the environment.
UNCTAD-92
The decision to hold the International Conference on Social
Sustainable Development in 1992, in Rio de Janeiro, was
another initiative that resulted from the work of the
Worldwide Commission on the Environment, that had a
great repercussion and long lasting impact.
UNCTAD 92, or Rio-92, as this United Nations Conference on
the Environment and Development was known, was held in
June of 1992, in Rio de Janeiro, with the main goal of
seeking the means to conciliate social, economic and
industrial development with the preservation and protection
of all eco-systems of the Earth.
The conference brought together representatives of almost
all of the countries in the world to decide upon measures to
be taken to decrease environmental degradation and
preserve this legacy for future generations.
Among other proposals, the Charter of the Earth, the official
document of UNCTAD 92, drafted the Agenda 21 (the
foundation enabling each country to set up a plan for
environmental preservation). This is an action program that
makes viable a new standard of rational environmental
development, conciliating methods for environmental
protection, social justice and economic efficiency.
“A committed company will set forth strategies that are able to createeconomic value, by means of enhancements in social and environmentalperformance, not leaving aside ethical aspects and corporate governance.”

As a consultant in the field of Social Responsibility I have been
following-up, since 2004, on the FMC projects in the social and
environmental sphere, such as Women of Fiber and the partnership
with IAS (Instituto Algodão Social). At that time, I was invited to
become a part of the first project, geared to cotton producers.
Acknowledged for its daring profile and always in the quest for
innovation, FMC decided, to commemorate the 10 years of the Fiber
Club, to include a program for the wives of First Class customers with
a lecture on Social Responsibility.
This was the mobilization strategy to present a social project that
would be championed, as of that moment, by women, who are also
responsible for the production chain. As enterprising as their
companions, they speedily took on this challenge and began to
create a team accountable for setting forth the proposal which ended
up being called Women of Fiber Project.
The proposal consists of the following: FMC financially backs the
projects set forth by the representatives of the Group Women of
Fiber, who carry out volunteer work in non-government organizations
(NGOs) located in the Brazilian Cerrado, a region with a
predominance of cotton production.
The incentive towards volunteer work is the logic to make good use
of the local wealth and this is where the fundamental principles that
contribute to social development are produced.
This year, the Project begins its fourth edition with proven results.
What should be mentioned is the growing number of projects
enrolled — 11 in the first year up to 33 in the last edition —, a
broadening of the participation of representatives from the Group
Women of Fiber in volunteer work, as well as the evolution of social
entities when it comes to becoming aligned with the legislation
whichrules over the Third Sector activities, a pre-requisite to
compete for the award.
Given that FMC is recognized by its clients for engaging in bold
initiatives, in 2005, two rural entrepreneurs manifested their intention
to extend to the production practice for cotton the values which refer
to their workers, community in general and the environment. They
therefore invited the company to take part in the construction of this
new project, transforming an idea into reality. The proposal was
launched in the 11th edition of the Fiber Club, giving birth to the
Instituto Algodão Social, IAS, championed by its President, José
Pupin, and initially concentrated in Mato Grosso, so that, once their
values, purposes and action strategies become consolidated, they can
be disseminated in the future to all of the Cotton Producer
Associations.
In the medium term, the Institute will generate a campaign enabling
its members to engage in the Millennium Goals and the Global Pact,
initiatives proposed by the United Nations Organization as practices in
Social Responsibility seeking a more sustainable and all inclusive
global economy.
This is my viewpoint of FMC, a company that invests in partnerships,
that is committed with sustainable development, not only on the
social side, but on the environmental one as well.
As a result of such an investment, the IAS, by means of technicians
specializing in HR and Health and Safety, invested in offering
orientation to entrepreneurs in cotton culture on the legislation of HR,
safety, health and the environment. The next step will be to launch
the Cotton Seal, a seal printed on each cotton bale, a certification that
the product comes from a production process that is in accordance to
Brazilian legislation and certifying the non-use of child or slave labor.

f current trends prove to be a reality, the decade initiated in 2005
will be known as the golden decade of the sugar and alcohol Iindustry due to an incredible production leap from 386.8 million
tons of cane in 2005 to 756.4 million forecasted for the end of this
cycle. This figure represents a growth of 95.5% mostly motivated by
sales the foreign markets.
When we analyze the current scenario, we notice that in 2005, the
ethanol market experienced a demand for 5.7 billion liters of
dehydrated alcohol and 7.4 billion liters of hydrated alcohol, totaling
13.1 billion liters. In that same year (2005), the demand for gasoline
“A” was 18.3 billion liters. If we add all the figures, the total for the
OTTO cycle (engines that run on gasoline, ethanol and gas) is 31.4.
And, what should we expect for 2015? With the evolution of the flex fuel
cars (82.5% of total sales in Jan./07) the outlook shows that the
demand for dehydrated alcohol will drop to 3.8 billion liters because
gasoline's demand, which was 18.3 billion, will drop to 15.1 billion
liters. This indicates that gasoline will be replaced by hydrated alcohol.
At the same time, hydrated alcohol's demand will jump from 7.4 billion
liters to 29.6 and if we add dehydrated to the calculation, the total will
be 33.3 billion liters. As a result, total OTTO cycle grows to 48.4 billion
liters.
This is a very clear trend in our market, a vision that allows us to see
that dehydrated alcohol will experience a 33.9% drop, whereas
hydrated will grow 299.7%, representing an increase of 154.6%. On
the other hand, gasoline “A” will suffer a reduction of 17.8% and the
OTTO cycle, an increase of 54%.

However, this is a cold scenario that depicts a market trend for fuel
alcohol that considered an expansion to the foreign market that did not
happened. Considering the likelihood of that happening, the 33.3 billion
liters from the internal market will grow to include at least 10 billion
liters more from exports to the US market, in addition to orders from
Japan.
This is the first vision of the current and future position of this growth.
If we look at the sugar market in 2006, we had a global demand of 145
million tons therefore, by 2015 this figure should be close to 175 million
tons. This market is expected to grow by 30 million tons, a figure equal
to Brazil's crop season today.
As a result, Brazil goes from having 45% of the free international
market in 2006 to almost 56% already considering the new markets
and the fact that the country may be better positioned in this market.
The global ethanol market — internal, external and industrial fuel
alcohol markets — is expected to reach a total of 43.1 billion liters. The
internal fuel alcohol market is expected to grow from 13.1 billion liters
in 2005 to 33.3 billion liters and the external market will go from 2.5 to
eventually 8.5 billion or even 10 billion liters.

had 9.8 million tons and in 2015 this figure should grow to 11.4
million. This market usually grows approximately 1.8% to 2%
a year which is not a very significant growth because Brazil is
already a large consumer. However, the external market is
more significant, with 16.6 million tons in 2005 and 23.6
million tons projected for 2015. In summary, we expect to
have 26.4 and 35 million tons in the beginning and the end of
this cycle, respectively.
See table: Sugar - Global Market
In 2005 the mix of products in Brazil included sugar—alcohol,
being 51.2% alcohol and 48.8% sugar. In 2015, the change is
very reasonable with sugar dropping to 32.4% and alcohol
growing to 67.6%, stressing the reduction in sugar production
and the significant growth in alcohol production.
See table: Product Mix - Brazil
Assuming that 100% of flex fuel vehicles will use alcohol as the
main fuel for the fleet, the demand for hydrated alcohol will
reach 43.1 billion liters, as forecasted. In case 70% of the fleet
runs on alcohol and 30% on gasoline, the demand will be 36
billion liters.
In terms of production, this difference can apply to ethanol or
sugar, depending on the flexible Brazilian model. Production
could focus on sugar to supply the growing market, or alcohol.
The important thing is that because of that debate, in 2005 we
produced 386.8 million, representing a growth of 95.5%. In
other words, cane crops will double in ten years, considering
normal conditions. However, if the market demands more
ethanol, particularly the external market, this estimate may be
even higher. As for investments, supply growth between 2005
and 2015 will require a total of US$ 35 billion. Prices will be
subject to market variations.
It is important to emphasize that both products derive from the
same raw material. Therefore there is a direct correlation
between sugar and alcohol. Prices move side-by-side. At times
the situation will alternate because internal and external markets
differ from each other but just as we find a direct correlation
between ethanol and gasoline, the same can be said for sugar
and oil.
In the United States the energy issue reflects immediately on the
price of ethanol. Here, ethanol prices fluctuate in such a way that
the price ratio ethanol—gasoline at the pump is very important—
the price of ethanol in the domestic market is pegged to gasoline
prices whereas the price of ethanol in the foreign market
depends on the price of oil and on supply and demand. Thus,
there will be instances when alcohol prices in the foreign market
will be much better than the price in the domestic market. By the
same token, future prices will be dependent on demand growth,
supply follow-up and oil prices.

In the case of sugar, when oil price per barrel was around 20 to 30
dollars, sugar price was around 7 cents per pound/weigh. When the
price of oil gets to 60 dollars a barrel, sugar prices reach 13 cents per
pound/weigh, under normal conditions. If there is a sudden surplus
of sugar in Brazil or in India, for instance, the price can be close to 10
cents, or in a reverse scenario, 19 cents, as experienced before. It
fluctuates as the oil price did when it reached 80 dollars at one point.
Why does this correlation exist? Since sugar markets are protected,
Brazil does not sell to the United States, Europe or Japan. It sells to
Russia, the Middle East and Africa, all oil producers and major buyers
of Brazil. Therefore, there is a direct correlation between increases of
income due to oil effect in these countries and increased purchases of
sugar.
In the past few years we have seen a change in the production
profile, i.e., part of the cane acreage was geared towards ethanol and
not sugar. This relative reduction of sugar production causes the price
of the product to increase because producers are making more
ethanol than sugar resulting on a drop in sugar production and as a
consequence, the price of the product goes up. It is all part of the
logic behind the price curve of these products.
We concluded that, under normal circumstances, the price of alcohol
must be kept around 400 dollars per cubic meter for some time and
sugar prices will be around 12 to 13 cents per pound/weigh. In a
more distant future, I firmly believe that there will be a technological
breakthrough in pulp and alcohol production industries, among
others, that will allow these commodities to meet market needs even
under very strong demand.
New cane map
Fundamentally, the great evolution that Brazil will show in
sugarcane production is that presently we have approximately
250,000 hectares geared to cattle raising and these extensive
pasturelands are gradually being replaced by soybean and
sugarcane crops, due to the great synergy that exists between
these two cultures.
This is also happening at the Cerrado region, where 90 million
hectares will soon be used to accommodate the growth of cane
production.
Today, 40% of cane crops are located in traditional sugar cane
areas and the remaining 60% are new players national and
multinational groups that basically focus on two things: buying
existing units and forming greenfields, i.e., new acreage
dedicated to this crop. This is the expansion landscape of
production for the country, where demand drives supply.

Interview:ndLourival C. Mônaco Jr., winner of the 2 FMC
Honeymoon Contest for Sugar Cane Crops
ith the aim of studying the sedge in sugar cane, responsible
for great losses in sugar cane plantations, agronomist Wengineer Lourival C. Mônaco Jr., Regional Manager of the
Costa Pinto Sugar Mill from Piracicaba, São Paulo, took one additional
step in his search for a solution to this problem. Last year he developed
on a plot at Plantation 5130 - Santa Rosa some research work based on ®the new handling of areas infested by this weed, with the use of Boral
in pre-planting, obtaining significant results that put him up for an ndexcellent position in the award 2 Honeymoon fostered by FMC, of
which he was the winner.
The results were presented during the holding of the Cane Club (Clube
da Cana) at the end of last year.
Which were the objectives of this study?
The sugar cane crop faces several problems of drop of productivity, due
to the presence of sedge. As a result of that, this research aimed at
determining which were these productivity losses and to see if the use
of the application system in pre-plantation of sugar cane is
economically feasible. Another goal was to verify the selectivity of ®Boral in subsequent applications, in a short period of time, and if the
“quebra de lombo” * operation interferes in the product efficacy.
* (A small or medium sized tractor with an open cabin that displaces
itself throughout the area with sugar cane pulling an implement that
destroys the soil ridges left by the planting between the cane lines or
furrows. Literal translation would be ridge breakers).
Which were the results attained?
What can be observed is that the presence of this weed can lead to
losses in the sugar cane crop ranging in the order of 46,43 t/ha, if no
treatment is adopted for control. This work showed that, percentage
wise, such losses reach 40% where there has been no “quebra-lombo”
and to 30% where this operation has been carried out. All of the ®treatments with the use of Boral achieved a reduction in the tuber
bank varying from 41% up to 99,73% for the larger doses used in pre-
plantation and in the crop itself. The cost-benefit ratio of the application
was favorable for all of the treatments tested, varying from 1:3 up to
1:9 when 1,2 l/ha were used in the pre-planting and 1,5 l/ha in the
post plantation.

And regarding the selectivity of the product in subsequent
applications, was the result positive as well?®Boral proved to be quite selective for sugar cane, as even in the larger
doses (1,5 + 1,8 l/ha) there was an increase of 22 to 29 t/ha compared
to the witness, associated to greater reductions in the tuber bank
(99,73%). And it was shown that the “quebra de lombo” operation ®positively interferes in the action of Boral on the tuber bank.

fields surrounded by nature where the sport is practiced. GHowever, the game's rules are really amazing: the sport does not
require a dispute amongst players and it relies exclusively on the
performance of each player. Golf can be a good way to get to know
yourself better and to improve your personal skills.
The sport itself consists on hitting a small ball with a long club to make
it travel a long way and finally end up in a hole. It sounds easy but
golfing requires certain skills from players that are important not only
in the golf course but also in everyday life. The best golfers know that
to play a good game, players must be persistent, humble, talented,
have a strategy, technique and concentration.
Because of these skills, it is common to draw a parallel between golf
and the world of business. But, the official psychiatrist of CBG (the

there are close to 15 thousand golfers and 62 official

The sport in Brazil
The game usually involves 18 holes and tournaments last between
one to four days. The winner is the one who finishes all holes with
the least number of strokes. The total circuit of 18 holes is six
kilometers long on a straight line and it takes approximately four
and a half hours to be played. That is why golf is an excellent sport to
make new friends and socialize.
Golf can be played individually or in groups of two to four players.
Its peculiarity is the absence of an “adversary”. The only adversary
of the golfer is the course itself (there are lakes, curves, slopes,
etc.). There is nothing a simple golfer can do to harm the
performance of the other players. The outcome depends on
individual effort and luck and each golfer struggles to lower his/her
total score in the course.

yet another important characteristic of the game: its ludic side.
“Golf involves a psychological side, whereas the swing is very close
to being a dance and the game is very much like joyful kids play.”
What can be better than that?
Well, things are not that simple — golf is still an expensive sport
and mostly played by the elite. However, it is recently becoming
more popular and involving more middle class players as the sport
becomes increasingly affordable.
Another change has to do with the age of players. Golf appeals to
older people, yet still full of energy and willing to keep active and
compete, but they choose activities of lower impact. Today,
however, there are golfers of all ages and even some who migrated
from other sports, like the case of soccer player Ronaldo.

twice resuscitated by the physicians after the consecutive heart attacks.
With panting breath, his body impotent in the face of the excruciating pain,
suffering an intense hemorrhage, he remembers thinking of something
that sounded like "I hope I make it”, "I am not going to die”, when he heard
the doctor saying to another one “this will not work”, during the heart
massage. This person underwent a quasi-death experience and had just

speaking of an athlete's leg. And one of the best Brazil has ever produced.
The leg of someone who won two Bronze Olympic Medals (Tornado class),

The accident was sheer stupidity. Lars and Anders Schmidt, his
cousin and his bowman, were participating in a Tornado class
competition on the Camburi Beach in Vitória, in Espírito Santo. On
the second day of the competition, minutes before setting off they
went out for a recognizance tour of the competition line. Besides
theirs, one hundred other boats were in the area delimited for the
regatta. Suddenly, a motorboat appeared at great speed, invaded
the area and hit the back of the Tornado piloted by Lars. The
strength of this impact was such that the 136 kilo boat keeled over.
Anders managed to jump unto the water before being run over and
was not hurt. Lars was not as lucky. Sucked in below the
speedboat, he had his leg amputated by the blades of the boat.
After twenty six days of hospitalization and ten surgeries, nine of
which with general anesthesia, the sailor had more than sufficient
reason to become one more of those embittered, revolted and
depressive people. But this is not what happened. Lars preferred to
feel blessed for being alive still and to take advantage of that fact
in the most intense way possible. Where bitterness should have
arisen, gentleness came about. Depression was replaced by an
energy that thrust him to carrying out projects never imagined
before. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, Lars Grael became an
example of how to overcome things for those who suffer self-
prejudice in similar situations. In his book “A Saga de um
Campeão” (The Saga of a Champion - Editora Gente), the sailor
states he is happier now than before the accident, simply because
he has changed his way of looking upon life. He recounts that he
has learned to be more tolerant with others and towards himself,
and that in any circumstance he looks for the better side of things
and people as well.

Evidently this fatality withdrew from him the chance to dream with
winds leading him to other Olympic podiums. Nevertheless, with
great determination, even without the use of prosthesis, he has
once again gotten on board ships and feels the pleasure of having
the breeze hitting him strongly on the face and holding the helm to
face new challenges. Moreover, he has taken advantage of this to
develop his latent political vein and through the invitations he
receives to head government agencies, he can contribute in an
evermore decisive manner not only towards the development of
sailing, but also to all national sports as a whole.
Presently Lars Grael has his agenda crowded with invitations to
impart lectures and explain how it is possible to transform a tragedy
into a new way of looking upon, feeling and enjoying the gift of life.
Those who have had the opportunity to hearing him are enchanted
with his simplicity and the courageous way with which he has
overcome his fate. September 6th, 1998. A day that never ended!
Quite the contrary, a new history began there, the history of
someone who had the courage to show the world that regardless of
any type of difficulty that life sets before us, it is always worthwhile
considering it a blessing to be alive. May this great man allow me
and forgive me for this irresistible pun on words: Lars sweet Lars.

Face a face Face to face
Qual é a receita dessa trajetória tão bem-sucedida?

alcohol, a clean and renewable fuel that will help Brazil become a
developed nation.
A lesson: I must always work seriously and treat our partners as we
would like to be treated.
People from whom you draw inspiration: My

born leader, Antonio Eduardo Tonielo, alias Toninho, is
what you can call a great entrepreneur. Born and raised in ASertãozinho, São Paulo, at the age of 12 he was already
working with his father in the crops. When he was 14, he started
managing a small “pinga” (fire water) mill and also worked to sell
the drink.
After his father divided the land of the farm amongst his children,
Toninho, together with his brothers Waldemar, Renato and José
Pedro, bought their sisters' land since they were interested in
working the fields. This was the beginning of a growing process in
the industry. The initial kick-off was Santa Inês Destillary, founded
in 1966, at Fazenda Córrego das
Pedras, in Sertãozinho. And they
never stopped growing. In 1984 he
founded Virálcool Destillary in the
town of Pitangueiras, São Paulo and
two years later, on July 17, 1986
they celebrated the first crop with a
production of 30.9 million liters of
fire water. However, one of his
biggest dreams came through in
1988 when Virálcool started to
produce alcohol and ten years later
sugar and dehydrated yeast.
In 2002, the mill started to co-
generate energy to CPFL — Companhia Paulista de Força e Luz —
and, last July, Virálcool 2 began to operate in Castilho, a town
located between the states of São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul.
It is estimated that by 2010, the mill will produce 2.5 million tons.

With all this background, it is easy to understand why Toninho
Tonielo married a woman equally strong and determined. He is
married to Maria Neli Mussa Toniel, 65 years old, with whom
he had seven children, six women and one man. They have
ten grandchildren.
When she was a girl, Neli worked in the cotton crops to help
the household budget; she was a shop clerk and helped her
father in a mechanical shop. This experience taught her
to respect and value people, particularly those in need
and her strong leadership led her to manage several
social institutions and community movements.
More recently, she embraced a political career and in
1996 was elected the first woman mayor of
Sertãozinho. Before that she was council woman at
the local House of Representatives and vice-
president of the São Paulo Federation of Hokey and
Skating.
The generator of wealthcar and truck dealerships in Sertãozinho and Ribeirão Preto.
He is considered one of the most respected businessmen of
the sugar and alcohol industry in Sertãozinho in addition to
being an important co-op leader. In 1971 he was made
administrative director of Copercana — the Cooperative of
Cane Growers for the West of the State of São Paulo — a
position he held until 1999 when he became the president, his
current position at the co-op. He was also the director-
treasurer at Canaoeste — the Asociation of Cane Growers for
the West of the state of São Paulo — (1972 2000) and
administrative director of Cocred — the Credit Cooperative of
Cane Growers from Sertãozinho.
After 1999, he became president
of the co-op a position he still
holds today. He is also president of
the Rural Union of Sertãozinho.
Today, at the age of 66, the boy
who was raised in the crops of his
father, together with his ten
brothers and sisters, has his own
mill and generates wealth all
around him: in the sugar/alcohol
industry, he is responsible for four
thousand direct jobs or seven
thousand people who work for him
in all his companies and
institutions owned by his family or the ones he presides. What
is the secret of such a successful career? “Everything we do in
life must be taken seriously and with respect. It is the only
way we can succeed in life”, he says.
