Eaton VacuumInterruptionTechnology
Eaton Vacuum Interrupters(EVIs) Are at the Heartof the Escalating Growthin Worldwide Demandfor Electricity
World demand for electricity isescalating with the use of moreefficient medium voltage powerdistribution systems. Utilitiesare pursuing higher powergeneration systems usingfossil, nuclear, hydro and windpower to supply an increasingnumber of transmission net-works internationally. Networksubstations are distributingpower to a greater number ofconsumers regionally. Powerconsumers are insisting onenvironmentally friendlyprotection equipment andswitchgear compact enoughto fit within their site spaceconstraints. Improving powerreliability is a growing require-ment for medium voltageprotection and switching
equipment manufacturers ascritical power consumptioncontinues to grow.
At the Core of theConundrum, an IdealProtection andSwitching Solution
Medium voltage powerswitching is one demandingapplication in today’s greenworld. Continuous currentand interruption requirementscontinue to increase as lowerimpedance systems are
deployed. Packaging volumesand cooling capabilitiescontinue to decrease dueto site space constraints. The challenge is at the coreof every switchgear, ring mainunit, pad mount unit, circuitbreaker, recloser, tap changer, contactor and switch. The idealsolution is an environmentallyfriendly medium voltageinterrupter, capable of reliablyswitching high stress currentsrobustly, without the needfor unreliable cooling orventilation systems.

An Ideal Solution, DevelopedThrough Years of Innovation
The solution starts with thecustomer’s needs at the center, driven by decades of Americaningenuity in vacuum interruptioninvention, expanded by years ofEuropean attention to detail indesign for today’s green envi-ronment. These facets coupledwith quality improvementsmade by U.S. and Chinesemanufacturing operations, theideal solution custom-fits thecustomer’s application andcompetitively interrupts greaterpower with less wear and main-tenance over its life-cycle. Thissolution requires innovation thatleverages expertise in IEEE,IEE/EN, UL /CSA, IEC andGB/JB/DL vacuum interruptionrequirements and applications.
Years of Innovationand Experience
Global innovation can only beachieved through long-termcommitment to the customer’stotal product life cycle. Eatonpromotes application orientedsales relationships, confidentialR&D partnerships, responsivetesting and certification supportof customer’s products. In addi-tion to aftermarket technical andcost-out consulting services,Eaton pays attention to thedetails that deliver the idealproduct solution for a problemapplication, ultimately resultingin the optimization of the
customer’s product designinvestments.

EVIs: Commitment toQuality, Performance Testedto the World’s Standards
The greatest advantage to theutilization of an EVI in mediumvoltage distribution switchgearis its compact size. A vacuumdielectric allows contacts to bearranged closer together socircuit interruptions can be
designed in a smaller enve-lope. To meet IEC, ANSI andGB/JB/DL standards, EVIs aremanufactured in ISO-9001certified and ISO-14001certified facilities under strictquality procedures. Each EVIis tested throughout the
manufacturing process andonce again before packaging.
A dielectric withstand, as wellas a vacuum assurance test, isperformed on every interruptercreated. In addition to the test-ing process, Eaton also incor-porates a sequential bar codethat allows us to track materiallots, as well as the operators
involved with building eachinterrupter in an electronic
database. The true test of ourproduct range is conducted dafter day, year after year in thfield. With well over 3 millionEVIs in service around theworld, our customers testifythat the EVI is one of the moscritical and reliable componen
in their end product.
