This Canadian premiere of the São

Paulo Companhia de Dança — one of the

finest young companies on the world

scene — is such a glorious way to wind

up the NAC 2015-2016 Dance season.

A meeting place for a diverse group of

dance and related artists, the company is

a fascinating backdrop for both Brazilian

and international cultures as expressed

through the passion of dance. It’s a great

tribute to the troupe — directed by former

dancer, documentary filmmaker and writer,

Inês Bogéa — that so many world-class

choreographers wish to see their works

performed by its vibrant performers.

Tonight’s program is designed to illustrate

their great range and dynamism, including

The Seasons by one of Canada’s own, the

multi-talented Edouard Lock. It continues

The National Arts Centre Foundation

dedicates tonight’s performance to the late

Yulanda Faris. Passionate supporters of the

arts, Yulanda and her husband Mohammed

(Moh) were recipients of the Ramon John

Hnatyshyn Award for Voluntarism in the

Performing Arts in 2010. Yulanda worked

on behalf of the Vancouver arts community

for more than 40 years. She was Chair of

the Vancouver Opera Foundation where

she founded the Yulanda M. Faris Young

Artists Program with husband Moh, and an

active member of the National Arts Centre

Board of Trustees.

Her generous contributions to the

performing arts in Canada will be missed.

In her memory, the Yulanda M. Faris Fund

was established at the National Arts Centre

to support artistic works in dance, opera,

theatre and music in Western Canada.

La Fondation du Centre national des Arts

dédie la représentation de ce soir à la

mémoire de la regrettée Yulanda Faris.

Fervents protecteurs des arts, Yulanda et

son mari Mohammed (Moh) ont reçu en

2010 le prix Ramon John Hnatyshyn pour

le bénévolat dans les arts du spectacle.

Yulanda a œuvré pendant plus de 40 ans

au service de la communauté artistique

de Vancouver. Elle a été présidente du

conseil d’administration de la fondation

du Vancouver Opera où elle a créé avec

son mari le Yulanda M. Faris Young Artists

Program, et elle a joué un rôle actif à titre

de membre du conseil d’administration du

Centre national des Arts.

Nous n’oublions pas le généreux soutien

que cette grande dame a apporté au milieu

des arts de la scène au Canada. Le Centre

national des Arts a constitué à sa mémoire

le Fonds Yulanda M. Faris en appui aux

œuvres d’artistes de l’Ouest canadien dans

les domaines de la danse, de l’opéra, du

The images created by Edouard Lock in

The Seasons revitalize the sense of

memory in dance. In the piece, you can

observe several layers that interact with

each other — dance, music, scenery and

light — and are reorganized according to

the perception of the viewer. Each element

creates a new image. Each gesture has

its counterpart in a movement of light.

The choreographer submits 12 dancers

to the dizzying speed and extreme

precision of his vivacious, angular and

undulating movement. Slowness and speed

permeates intense scenes, disorienting our

perception.

dans The Seasons réveillent le sens de

la mémoire en danse. Dans la pièce,

on peut déceler plusieurs niveaux qui

s’influencent mutuellement — la danse, la

musique, la scénographie et la lumière —

et qui sont réagencés selon la perception

du spectateur. Chaque élément crée

une nouvelle image. Chaque geste a sa

contrepartie dans un mouvement de

Mamihlapinatapai deals with the desire

for love between men and women. The

word Mamihlapinatapai is a term from

the indigenous language spoken by the

Yaghan, a tribe of Tiera del Fuego. A look

between two people, each one wishing the

other to make a move and make something

happen, but none of them acting. Brazilian

choreographer Jomar Mesquita used

deconstructed elements of ballroom

dancing to create this work.

Mamihlapinatapai porte sur le désir d’amour

entre les hommes et les femmes. Le mot

« Mamihlapinatapai » est un terme de la

langue autochtone parlée par les Yagans

de la Terre de Feu, qui signifie « regard

partagé entre deux personnes qui espèrent

chacune que l’autre va prendre l’initiative

de quelque chose que les deux désirent,

mais qu’aucune ne veut commencer ». Le

chorégraphe brésilien Jomar Mesquita

procède ici à une déconstruction des

danses sociales de son pays.

Nacho Duato was inspired by the nature

of Valencia, surrounded by sea and sun,

and by Mediterranean aromas, colors

and flavors, to create Gnawa. It uses

the four basic elements — water, earth,

fire and air — to explore the relationship

between humans and the universe. Duato

is interested in gravity and the use of the

solo as key elements in constituting his

dance. The Gnawas are a mystical Islamic

fellowship.

Pour créer Gnawa, Nacho Duato s’est inspiré

de la nature de Valence, baignée par la mer

et le soleil, et des arômes, des couleurs et

des senteurs de la Méditerranée. Il utilise

les quatre éléments — l’eau, la terre, le

feu et l’air — pour illustrer la relation entre

les humains et les forces supérieures de

Government of the State of São Paulo,

São Paulo Companhia de Dança (SPCD)

is directed by Inês Bogéa, Ph.D. in Arts,

dancer, documentary filmmaker and writer.

During this period, their works have

been viewed by 400,000 people in 11

different countries, in approximately

60 cities totaling more than 400

performances. The Company has a varied

repertoire, ranging from classical to

contemporary. Recognized by specialized

critics as one of the main dance companies

of Latin America, the Company has

produced 36 choreographies so far: 20

creations and 16 restagings.

SPCD seeks a connection with the

audience through passion, curiosity and

understanding of the dance world. The

Company is a meeting place of diverse

artists — choreographers, lighting

professionals, photographers, visiting

teachers, set designers and fitters, writers,

artists, cartoonists, musicians, costume

designers, etc.

Dance has so many stories and to

reveal some of them, the Company created

the documentary series Figuras da Dança,

where stories about the art form are told

by those who lived it. The series currently

has 32 episodes that you can watch on

Brazilian TV Channels. SPCD also produces

the documentary series Canteiro de Obras

and books of essays.

The Educational Programs and Theatre

Training for Dance form another strand of

work for SPCD. In Lecture For Educators

we have the opportunity to talk about the

In The Seasons, creation of the Canadian choreographer Edouard Lock for

São Paulo Companhia de Dança, what the audience sees enlightened on stage

is as important as what is hidden in the darkness of the stage. Layers of light are

overlapped on the variation of time. By alternating or subverting the speed of

ballet movement, it makes the result of the classic dance unpredictable.

Dans The Seasons, une création du chorégraphe canadien Edouard Lock pour la

São Paulo Companhia de Dança, ce que le public voit éclairé sur scène est tout

São Paulo Companhia de Dança directed by Inês Bogéa, made its first

appearance in Italy to perform at the official opening of the Bolzano

Danza Festival and held up to the expectations, showing Bolzano an

admirable performance. They performed a program with three different

choreographies, interpreted with an extraordinary talent and liveliness

by the dancers from this young and prestigious Brazilian company.

In the second piece of the program, Gnawa, a piece created by Nacho Duato, the brazilians also

create a dense atmosphere on stage, despite the stage props comprising of a few candle-lit

lanterns only. Once again, the company achieves the feat of staging a production without any

narrative or metaphor, relying solely on its repertoire of movement and a strong presence of the

dancers. The applause are always guaranteed.

Dans Gnawa, la seconde pièce au programme, chorégraphiée par Nacho Duato, les danseurs

BiographiesInês Bogéa Artistic Director

Inês Bogéa is the artistic director of São

Paulo Dance Company. She has a PhD in

Art (Unicamp, 2007) and currently teaches

Art Education: Theory and Practice, in the

specialization program at Maria Antonia

campus of the University of São Paulo.

She is also a writer and documentary

filmmaker. From 1989 through 2001, Bogéa

was a dancer with Grupo Corpo (Belo

Horizonte), and subsequently a dance critic

at Folha de S.Paulo newspaper. She has

written three children’s books — O livro da

dança (Cia. das Letrinhas, 2002), Contos

do balé (Cosac Naify, 2007) and Outros

contos do balé (Cosac Naify, 2012). She

has also organized the publications Oito ou

nove ensaios sobre o Grupo Corpo (Cosac

Naify, 2007), Em Cena — Ensaios sobre a

São Paulo Companhia de Dança (Martins

Fontes, 2012), among other titles. In the

field of art education, she has acted as

consultant for Escola de Teatro e Dança

Fafi and the Fábricas de Cultura program

launched by the State of São Paulo

Department of Culture. Bogéa is the author

of more than 40 dance documentary films

that include Renée Gumiel, a vida na pele

(2005), Maria Duschenes — o espaço do

movimento (2006), and the series Figuras

Edouard LockChoreographer

Edouard Lock is a dance director,

filmmaker and photographer. He was born

in Morocco in 1954 and studied cinema

and literature at Concordia University

in Montreal. Lock began his career as a

choreographer at age 20 and has created

works for Canadian companies such as

Le Groupe Nouvelle Aire and Les Grands

Ballets Canadiens de Montréal. In 1980,

he founded the company La La La Human

Steps. Over thirty years he has created

pieces for various dance companies such

as Ballet de L’Opéra de Paris, Het National

Ballet and Nederlands Dans Theater. His

choreographic style is characterized by

merging dance, visual arts and lighting

effects that creates distorted perceptions

in the bodies of the dancers. Among his

most important works are Lily Marlène

dans la jungle (1980), Human Sex (1985),

Infante, c’est destroy (1990), Exaucé/Salt

(1999), Amelia (2002) and Amjad (2007).

This is the first creation of Édouard Lock

for the São Paulo Companhia de Dança.

Jomar MesquitaChoreographer

Jomar Mesquita is a choreographer, teacher

and dancer. He is director of the Mimulus

Cultural Association, Mimulus Dance

Company and Mimulus Dance School since

1990, developing an extensive research on

the ballroom dance style. Highlights among

his creations are the award winning E Esse

Alguém Sabe Quem (2002), De Carne

e Sonho (2004) and Por um Fio (2010).

Parallel to his work at Mimulus, he creates

pieces for theater companies such as

Grupo Galpão, as well as for the companies

Nacho DuatoChoreographer

Nacho Duato was born in Valencia (Spain)

in 1957 and is one of the most important

artists of dance. He began his training at

age 18 and studied at three major schools:

Rambert School (England), Mudra School

under the direction of Maurice Béjart

(Belgium) and Alvin Ailey American Dance

Nacho Duato, un des plus grands artistes

de la danse, est né à Valence, en Espagne,

en 1957. Il a commencé sa formation

en danse à 18 ans et a étudié dans trois

grandes écoles : à la Rambert School

en Angleterre, à l’école Mudra sous la

direction de Maurice Béjart en Belgique, et

à l’Alvin Ailey American Dance Center aux

États-Unis. En tant que danseur, il intègre

le Cullberg Ballet (Suède) en 1980 et passe

au Nederlands Dans Theater (Pays-Bas) en

1981. Entre 1990 et 2010, il est directeur

artistique de la Compañía Nacional

de Danza (Madrid), la plus importante
