Lenten Bible Study: The Passion Narratives: Enrich your spiritual journey this Lent in a Wednesday even-ing Bible Study Group. Maggie Martin (631-234-4040) will continue this discussion on the Passion Narratives beginning at 6:30pm on the following 2 Wednesdays: March 18 & March 25. This informal group will meet in the Chapel. Please come prepared for discussion by reading the Gospel Passages while reflecting on the Questions for Discussion.

The Trial Before Pilate, Jesus Before Herod, The Sentence of Death, Mocking of the Soldiers, Jesus Carries the Cross Read Matthew 27:11-32, Mark 15:2-21, Luke 23:2-32, John 19:1-17 Questions for Discussion: • Does Pilate have anything against Jesus personally? Why

was Jesus brought to Pilate? Did Pilate act of his own will of was the will of the people forced upon him? If so, who forced this upon him?

• Why was Jesus sent to King Herod? What do you think Herod was expecting? Why did he respond in the way that he did? Why was Jesus sent back to Pilate?

• Do you think that Pilate thought of Jesus as just another false prophet or do you think he may have recognized something unique about the man in front of him?

• In which Gospel narrative(s) does Pilate was his hands in front of the people? What is the significance of this

action? • The scourging is a very cruel and gruesome form of

punishment. What do you think the Roman soldiers are thinking? What do you think the crowd is thinking? What do you think the disciples are feeling? What do you think Mary is thinking and feeling?

• How do YOU respond to this scene? • The passages about Jesus carrying the cross are much

shorter, yet the message is so powerful. Why does Jesus embrace the cross?

• What does this say about the sin of mankind and God’s love for us?

• Although the Stations of the Cross are depicted, and re-lived in the Catholic Church especially in Lent, they are not found in the Gospels. How do you think that tradition came to be a part of the popular Church culture? If you cannot join us in person, you are welcome to join us in spirit as you read and reflect on the Passion of Christ in the Gospel Narratives.

Diocese of Rockville Center Golden Wedding Liturgy

“This spring, couples that have been married fifty years or more will be honored at liturgies on Sunday, April 19 at St. Lawrence the Martyr, Sayville and on Sunday, April 26 at Maria Regina, Seaford. Both liturgies will begin at 2:30PM. Couples may register for ONE liturgy.

• There will be reserved seating for the registered couples only. Family & Friends will be seated on a first come—first served basis. • After the liturgy, there will be an opportunity to have a photo taken with the celebrating bishop if you wish. You will be mailed a complimentary photo and certifi-cate approximately 4 to 6 weeks after litur-gy.

Registration forms and complete instructions can be obtained in the Parish Office. THE RITE OF CALLING THE CANDIDATES TO CONTINUING CONVERTION

Bishop Andrzej Zglejszewski presided at this Rite in St. Joseph’s Church, Ronkonkoma. Fifteen baptized adults who wanted to complete the Initiation Sacra-ments they needed (Confirmation and Communion) came from our parish. In spite of the bad weather all arrived and answered the questions the Bishop asked them. His homily stressed the joy the Apostles felt on seeing Jesus on the mountain and the happiness these candidates should also feel for having arrived at this point on their journey.

Lenten Practices

All Catholics who have reached their fourteenth year are bound to abstain entirely from meat on Ash Wednesday and All Fridays of Lent.

All Catholics between the ages of eighteen and fifty-nine inclusive are also bound to observe the Law of Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This means limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Two other light meals, which together do not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day.

EL VIA CRUCIS: ¿QUE ME QUIERE DECIR?

Cuando participamos en el Via Crucis: ¿Qué estamos haciendo? ¿Estamos recordando algo que paso hace muchos años en la misma manera que recordamos los problemas que nuestros parientes soportaron cuando llegaron a este país? Venga los Viernes que quedan para que pueda entender el Via Crucis, puede tocarle personalmente mucho más que un cuento del abuelo o antepasado. LAS PRACTICAS TRADICIONALES PARA CUARESMA

Hay tres prácticas importantes para cada católico durante la Cuaresma, si uno quiere celebrar con Cristo el Día de la Resurrección, estas son: Limosna, Ayuno y Oración. Hoy en día en vez de Limosna, hablamos de Obras de Caridad.

La Oración es para beneficio del alma. El ayuno es para beneficio del cuerpo y las obras de caridad son para beneficio de nuestro prójimo.

En nuestra parroquia, puede unirse con Sonia y Alfonso Paredes para dar alimentos a los Jornaleros cada martes y viernes, a las 9:30am. Alfonso y Sonia estarán en el parqueo de la Iglesia para dirigir a los interesados al lugar donde se servirán los alimentos. LAS REGLAS PARA EL AYUNO Y LA ABSTINENCIA

Los que tienen 14 años en adelante no pueden comer carne todos los viernes de Cuaresma. (La re-gla de Abstinencia)

Los que tienen 21 a 59 años no pueden comer entre las comidas del desayuno, almuerzo y cena del Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo: Dos días al año, Nada más. EJERCICIOS ESPIRITUALES

Ignacio Loyola, un santo famoso que fue un soldato, sabia la importancia del ejercicio en mantener un cuerpo fuerte. El trasaldó este conoci-miento a la vida espiritual. Para mantener este lado del ser humano en buenas condiciones, hay que prac-ticar ejercicios espirituales.

Algunos de estos ejercicios tienen que ver con la oración. Uno de ellos que puede practicar durante la Cuaresma es el Via Crucis. Cada viernes, a las 7:30 pm la Iglesia está abierta para los feligreses que quieren compartir esta devoción. (Las dos devo-ciones que son universales son el Vía Crucis y el Ro-sario)

El Via Crucis require que usted está en la Igle-sia al tiempo indicado y siga los demás en las ora-ciones con un corazón abierto

La segunda devoción es el Rosario que también puede envolver otras personas. El Rosario está centra-do en los misterios de la vida de Cristo y El Vía Crucis en las últimas horas de Cristo.

Claro, hay muchos otros ejercicios que uno puede practicar durante este tiempo de cuaresma. Hemos señalado estos dos porque puede encontrarlos facil-mente en nuestra parroquia y no son demasiado difíciles de hacer. LAS PREGUNTAS DE SAN IGNACIO

Lectio Divina: es una forma de oración utilizando las Sagradas Escrituras. Se trata de un proceso de cuatro pasos, usando las Escrituras como base para conocer a nuestro Señor en una forma más profunda. Fue un proceso desarrollado por San Be-nedicto y se puede utilizar como oración individual o grupal.

4 PASOS: LEER, MEDITAR, ORAR, CONTEMPLAR

PUEDE COMENZAR CON UNA ORACIÓN AL ESPÍRITU SANTO: Ven, Espíritu Santo, ilumina mi mente, abre mi corazón para que yo pueda encon-trar en la Palabra a Cristo, el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida…...Ayúdame a seguir hoy, la llamada de Cristo de una manera nueva, conforme a tu palabra. Y lo digo por todos en el mundo, uno quien es enviado por el Señor, quiero ser un hermano/hermana, un amigo, ahora voy a ser un discípulo del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. Amén.

Paso 1: LEER: ¿Qué dice el texto bíblico? En el nivel más básico: ¿Qué está pa-sando en este pasaje bíblico? Usted tiene que identificar una PALABRA, FRASE, IDEA que toca su corazón…..que el Señor pone en tu corazón….. PRIMERA LECTURA: lea el texto en voz alta lenta y deliberadamente. REFLEXIÓN: tome varios minutos para reflexionar sobre la lectura y permitir que el Espíritu Santo le revele UNA PALABRA, UNA FRASE, UNA IDEA/CONCEPTO que es el centro del significado del texto para usted (¿Qué le está diciendo el texto bíblico?). INTERNALIZAR: repetir la palabra o frase en voz alta o en su corazón.

Paso 2: MEDITAR: ¿Qué me está diciendo personalmente Jesús a través del texto de la Escritura? ¿Qué es lo que Dios quiere que conozca o vea a través del texto de la Escritura? ¿Cómo este texto me habla a mi experiencia en la vida? SEGUNDA LECTURA: leer el mismo pasaje. LA MEDITACIÓN: tome varios minutos para reflexionar sobre la pregunta: ¿Qué me está diciendo personalmente Jesús a través de este texto de la Escritura?

Paso 3: ORAR: Mi Señor me ha hablado en el texto Bíblico: ¿Qué es lo que le quiero decir a Dios en oración? TERCERA LECTURA: puede volver a leer el mismo pasaje. REFLEXIÓN: Jesús me ha hablado personalmente en este texto Bíblico. ¿Qué quiero decir a mi Señor en oración? ORACIÓN: diga su oración a Señor ya sea en voz alta o interiormente.

Paso 4: CONTEMPLAR / ACTUAR: Como resultado de mi oración, ¿A qué Je-sús me está llamando HACER (esta semana) como resultado de este proceso? Por último, nuestra oración nos invita a la acción, en definitiva, a ser más compasivo y fiel. CONTEMPLAR: en lo que nuestro Señor está llamándome hacer como resultado de este proceso.

Lectio Divina: is a form of prayer using Sacred Scripture. It is a four step process, using Scripture as its basis to get to know our Lord in a more profound way. It is a process that was developed by St. Benedict and can be used in individual prayer or in a group.

4 STEPS: READ, MEDITATE, PRAY, CONTEMPLATE

MAY WANT TO BEGIN WITH A PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT: Come Holy Spirit, illuminate my mind, open my heart so I can encounter in your Word Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life…..Help me follow today, the call of Christ in a new way, according to your word. And let me be for all in the world, one who is sent by the Lord, let me be a brother/sister, let me be a friend, let me be a disciple of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. Step 1: READ: What does the Biblical Text Say? At the most basic level: What is going on in this Scriptural passage? You have to identify a WORD, PHRASE, IDEA that touches your heart….that the Lord places in your heart….. FIRST READING: read the text out loud slowly and intentionally. REFLECTION: take several minutes to reflect on the reading and allow the Holy Spirit to surface a WORD, A PHRASE, AN IDEA/CONCEPT that is central to the meaning of the text for you (What is the Biblical text saying?). INTERNALIZE: repeat the word or phrase either out loud or in your heart.

Step 2: MEDITATE: What is Jesus saying to me personally through this Scripture Text? What does God want me to know or see through this Scripture Text. How does this text speak to my experience in life? SECOND READING: read the same passage again. MEDITATION: take several minutes to reflect on the question: What is Jesus saying to me personally through this Scripture Text?

Step 3: PRAY: My Lord has spoken to me in the Scriptural Text: What do I want to say back to him in Prayer? THIRD READING: may want to re-read the same passage again. REFLECTION: Jesus has spoken to me personally in this Scriptural text. What do I want to say to my Lord in Prayer? PRAYER: say your prayer to our Lord either out loud or interiorly.

Step 4: CONTEMPLATE / ACT: As a result of my prayer, what is Jesus calling me to DO (this week) as a result of this process? Finally, our prayer calls us to action ultimately to be more compassionate and faithful. CONTEMPLATE: on what our Lord is calling you to do as a result of this process.
