Mundo, Imagem, Mundoworld, image, world

Human beings create images and use them as a means to build, understand, and spread ideas. Images influence the way we grasp and produce realities, generating manifold understandings about the world’s possible conceptions. The process of understanding and building realities is constantly moving and changing. In the varied cultural contexts, these views co-exist, overlap, crisscross and challenge each other. These ongoing exchanges between the world, the image, and the world bring about an intense flow, affecting human relations. The image then becomes a tool of power, since it both organizes and destabilizes realities. To actualize processes of critical thinking on the production of images and their influence in the world – this is what we want with FIF 2015.

Violent and sublime, the series presented by Ludgren creates something from fiction, both on natural and on human transformations. Its materiality reveals an inexplicably real world where pools are filled with red water, cement cubes fall from the sky and green foxes are unearthed. It is not a classic fable that provides us with a didactic moral, but something much more enigmatic and powerful. With his images Ludgren triggers mythical figures, plants and objects, both terrestrial and celestial, which activate and energize our own imagination and its creatures.

The enigmatic and thought-provoking photographs by Rouyer seem to lead us into the world of forests, myths and popular beliefs that, in some way, reflect our relationship with nature and its influence on us, creating an intimacy, desired or tolerated with our environment and our loved ones.

This work by Tulin has a strong connection to the land and Maine landscape in the region of New England, in the extreme northeastern United States, where the artist’s great-grandfather acquired a property that reminded him of his native Sweden. This environment full of ancient stories inhabits Tulin’s memory who, along with his family, visits every summer visit. Tales, legends and rumors about the farm contribute to a family mythology interweaving past and present. This folk tradition transforms merely natural and physical elements such as stairs, pine trees, boots, granite, wood stoves, stars and wind gusts into symbols of his family’s history.

The communities of runaway slaves were found throughout the Americas, Louisiana, Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, Colombia, Brazil, and the two Guianas, among others. They are the guardians of some of this self-emancipatory narrative. This is the story of the Quilombolas (Maroons) of Guyana, also known as Businenge or Bushinengue. The Obia photographic project aims to examine the relationship between the exceptional magical-religious legacy of the maroon people and new challenges arising from modernity: the ongoing acculturation among the new generations.

The pictures by Vilageliu address a particular territory, his hometown: Vilobí d’Onyar. The town with about 3,000 inhabitants is situated in the Catalonia region (Spain), and is located in an area of confluence of a powerful infrastructure transportation network: l’Eix Transversal Airport in Costa Brava, the Mediterranean motorway and the AVE railway line. While on the one hand it seems like a small remote village in the Catalan geography, its status as “no man’s land” surrounded by infrastructure turns it into a fragmented territory.

Twenty years after the end of the Bosnian War (1992-1995) Sarajevo faces the same problems of other contemporary cities: how to find the place of each individual in a society marked by fragmentation (in different districts, ethnic groups, religions or professional associations)? How to look at the future of a city that is undergoing profound changes and where the plans of real estate developers overlap with the reality of the urban spaces landscapes generated by computer? The series proposed by Lécuyer explores the distance between the reality of the city and its imaginary representations, triggering the role of consciousness and history in building an ever-changing world.

Andrea Grützner’s images from her series, Tanztee are capturing the interactions of a rural Eastern German community while a, “tea dance“ in a long-established guesthouse on a Sunday afternoon. The inspiration stems from the tactile nature the dancing conjures and the love to music these people have. The clash of colorful patterns, wrinkles and the repetition of jewellery is a visual amplification of their emotions. Andrea felt a real tenderness between the women while she was taking the pictures.

The images presented make up the 3x4 project, the result of an immersion in two women’s prisons in Mozambique: the Maputo Civil Prison and the Female Detention Center of Ndlhavela. Over a year living with women of various nationalities, ages and social classes, but whose stories are interconnected by violent episodes, separation, atonement and reconciliation, Maissune portrays them showing how everyday resistance to violence and the jail take place in the bodies.

This photographic project explores three regions of São Paulo, considered to be central in different periods and for different reasons: the historic center, Paulista Avenue and Berrini Avenue. Guided by testimonials from people who have spent much of their lives in these areas, and researching iconographic material in several archives, the project combines observations on the historical cycles and progress and decay flows of these areas over a period of nearly 40 years. These meetings resulted in a “docu-fiction” job, a reflection on the life in the city, weaving narratives and interpretations of urban, architectural and political changes.

Cristina Nuñez Someone to lovewww.cristinanunez.comEspanha /// Spain

The photographs presented by Cássio Vasconcelos are inspired by the European painters who depicted Brazil in the early nineteenth century such as Johann Moritz Rugendas, Jean-Baptiste Debret, Hercules Florence, Count of Clarac, Aimé-Adrien Taunay, Carl von Martius and others who, from 1816 on, arrived in Brazil with the French Artistic Mission, the Austro-German Mission and the Langsdorff Expedition. The aim was to study and portray Brazil, show it to the old world, which, until then, had no visual reference of what was here. So a figure of Brazil starts to inhabit a set of representations, one revisited ‘picture’ that updates the glamorous, the fearful and the unknown.

The video gathers, for the first time, the most significant self-portraits made over the life of Spanish artist Cristina Nuñez. It shows the evolution of her self-image as her voice narrates her own childhood and adolescence, troubled relationships with a heroin addict and the understanding of photography as an almost therapeutic tool.

Kim’s pictures challenge the spectacle articulated by global capitalism in the urban space with a kind of erasure. The gigantic neon signs in New York and Las Vegas are disfigured and transformed into abstract shapes. Blurry totems underlining our exaltation to the visual impulses we experience in cities. As tourists that are thrilled by the lights and liveliness, it does not matter what these ads really tell us.

These images depict a social, ethnic and economic relationship that affectively participates in our lives and often goes unnoticed. The women in these photographs are nannies, a universally low-paid job, although it requires loving the child as one of the duties envisaged. Considering labor relations and financial transactions, this is a very unusual demand. “Substitutes” points to the indelible impression that these women leave in the lives of children and the persistent questions they raise.

Both in this series and in some of her other work, the focus is on observing how immigration and transnational lives impact cultural identities by changing the relationship with the geography of Europe.

Exploring and discovering new territories and places in the contemporary, globalized, highly guarded and controlled world seems increasingly difficult. However, Delafontaine’s images show us the opposite and present us other possible worlds. Fragments of territory, old forgotten platforms or small villages can become republics and monarchies with all social and political devices that create the peculiar relationship between the individual, the nation and the territory. Ironic and disconcerting at the same time, Delafontaine’s micronations, combining various utopian forces, make us think of symbolic disputes over territory and identity issues.

Michel Le BelhommeThe Two Labyrinths www.muthos.frFrança /// France

Michel Le Belhomme invites us to consider quite ambiguous possibilities in our perception of the images. A representation can be more eloquent the more it moves away from its supposed reference. An image may come to light from real landscapes; it can also be re-photographed, taken from pictures of landscapes so that the “real” contours are no more than creases and folds. A simple strategy that “pulls our rug,” gives us the impression that we are looking at a computer generated image, when in fact it is the image of a real volume, built on paper. Labyrinths contained in a photograph in continuous disassembly and assembly movements.

Boris EldagsenPoem # 67, # 68www.eldagsen.comAlemanha /// Germany

In a poetic and delicate way, Elkins’ series gives life and visibility to the imagination of several men serving life and death row sentences in maximum security prisons in the United States. The idea for the series came from a questioning of the artist in relation to the notion of reality, self-identity or even the memories that these prisoners bring from the world out of the prison environment. In 2009, Elkins began writing for several inmates about these ideas asking about the impacts of this radical form of isolation. Besides the letters, the dialogue between inmates and Elkins developed into a collaboration that resulted in images that somehow include the imagery of these prisoners, the stories and the perplexities that they experience.

In Poems, Boris ventures into the metaphysical and an eroticism without excesses. He does not explore narratives, a place or a person; he transforms the reality of the world. By creating time-space relationships and almost inaccessible images to more rational records, it is left to the viewer to launch himself into his own depths.

Pictures by Lee trigger delicate senses of the notion of person and of being in the world, the helplessness, the inherent loneliness and courage against the inevitable disappearance. They reveal what is “too human” and without any drama, they report the depopulation the Ghoramara Island, located in the delta of the Bengal Bay, India. Due to the significant rise in sea level resulting from abrupt climate changes, the banks of the island have been constantly covered since the 1960s. In the 1980s more than 50% of the territory had disappeared due to erosion, which led two-thirds of the population to leave the island.

The video materializes every loose breath of air on a surface, in an ethereal landscape. Planting a light of dawn on a dark scene, it shows us the invisibility of breathing, writing and erasing a world after another.

Since the reform and opening, despite the vertiginous and uncontrolled economic development, China has been paying a very high price for severely harming their natural ecosystem. Weicheng’s photographs witness remote wilderness locations with abandoned Chinese landscapes. They feature a paradox, as they do not express any feelings for such losses, and they already appear as relics of the time, deservedly saved.

This series by Slovenc portray same-sex couples who have been together for a long time and it is inspired by the wedding portraits format, typical of the late nineteenth century, as well as the photographic techniques used during this period, including the fixed and large format camera. Mixing the artificiality of the traditional wedding pose standardization with contemporary domestic spaces, the series incites the audience to revisit and rethink this relationship, which instead of being a right, at best, it is a choice that is still hotly contested by the American Society.

Crystal Computing (Google Inc., St. Ghislain) is a video about a research on the Google data center in St. Ghislain, Belgium. The company’s largest data center in Europe and the second largest in the world. The work refers to the importance of materiality and location on the infrastructure of large companies connected to the network, which is often hidden under the advertising rhetoric of the “cloud”. From the title, the video points on the one hand, for the secret policies of the corporation and, on the other hand, for the use of subsidiaries as a method for tax evasion. It points in particular to the awareness of this materiality and controversial rhetoric of the company, a fact that could not be more urgent.

Produced in super 8mm during demonstrations in June 2013 in Belo Horizonte, it portrays the moment when a red flag with the phrase “Democracy against Kapital” approaches two flags, one white and one yellow, with the words “Power to the people” as well as another red flag saying “Zero Tariff. The lightness of these flags, as well as their movements, results in a set of unexpected sayings, unlikely phrases relocating the same words in new orders.

The work shows a kind of portrait of a nation at a time that is about to disappear. The Pfeifer’s approach is unique both in the form of representation of moving images, as in making the cruelty of anthropological practices visible in a community that suffered a violent political and economic, cultural, religious and social transformation.

Mener collected these images when exploring the archives of Stasi (abbreviation for Ministry of State Security), the intelligence service and espionage of the former East Germany. Driving them into new sequences, away from a proposal for a more direct report of the violence in these enforcement mechanisms and the use of photography in surveillance and social control processes, the images, almost silly, displaced from their context and relocated into a new arrangement attest, on the one hand, from their triviality and seriality to the laughable character of the intelligence procedure, and on the other hand, they indicate the passivity and social isolation, a pattern of mass behavior and a peaceful routine as if nothing extraordinary was happening.

Difficult conversations, oddly retrograde situations, recreated spaces and realities. The video mocks some aesthetic codes such as mystery, horror and black humor. Oscillating between the childish and the psychedelic, the body presented is fictionalized by an intense animality that updates ancestral impulses, emphasizing the perversion of the eye and the imagination.

In order to promote the expansion of spaces for discussion and critical debate on the participation of the image in the creation of awareness and sensitivity models in the engendering of social relations and in the formation of world visions, we developed an independent cultural action, in line with a festival, which could serve this purpose. The FIF-BH - International Photography Festival of Belo Horizonte - was designed with the purpose of stimulating the production of knowledge and generating discussions on the various aspects of image production in the contemporary world, its political and poetic features in the interface between art and the universe of photography. The project for the publication of “Espaços Compartilhados da Imagem” – Caderno de Reflexões Críticas sobre a Fotografia” (Shared Spaces of the Image - Critical Reflections on Photography Book) has its origins in the research that guided the process for the development of 2013 and 2015 editions of FIF-BH. This book consists of two chapters, Caderno de Textos (Text Book) and Caderno de Imagens (Image Book), which are organized around texts written by guest authors, focused on understanding the photographic image universe in its various aspects - aesthetic, poetic, political, philosophical, social, historical, among others - and images produced by artists who participated in the first edition of the festival.
