Uma das principais características culturais das tribos indígenas que habitavam as terras brasileiras na época do descobrimento era o cultivo de pimentas.
Após o descobrimento, as sementes e frutos de pimentas passaram a ser cada vez mais cultivados, disseminado entre vários povos, utilizadas de diversas formas.

É cultivada em regiões de clima tropical com precipitação pluviométrica variável de 600 a 1.200 mm e uma temperatura média de em torno de 25ºC.
Temperaturas inferiores a 15ºC prejudica o desenvolvimento vegetativo da planta.
O solo mais recomendado é o que apresenta textura leve com pH entre 5,5 a 6,0 com boa
drenagem

As espécies de pimentas do gênero Capsicum pertencem à família Solanaceae, como o tomate, a batata, a berinjela e o jiló.
Dentre as espécies do gênero Capsicum, cinco são domesticadas e largamente cultivadas e utilizadas pelo homem: Capsicum annuum; C. bacccatum; C. chinense; C. frutescens e C. pubescens. Destas, apenas C. pubescens não é cultivada no Brasil.
O centro de origem das pimentas do gênero Capsicum é o continente americano.
O centro de diversidade da espécie C. annuum var. annuum, a forma mais variável e cultivada, inclui o México e América Central; de C. frutescens, inclui as terras baixas do sudeste brasileiro até a América Central e as Antilhas (Índias Ocidentais), no Caribe; de C. baccatum var. pendulum, a Bolívia (maior diversidade) e o sudeste brasileiro; e de C. chinense, a mais brasileira das espécies domesticadas, é a Bacia Amazônia.
