Introductory remark

The Editorial board of the Kvetena CSR :decided to publish descriptions of new taxa and new nomenclatural combinations (or other results of taxo­nomic and nomenclatural research) in this section of the journal Preslia. It will be edited by V. Skalicky. It is expected that the authors will continue to publish separate articles or brief reports pertaining to the flora of the Czech Socialist Republic in this or other journals.

1. Persicaria x bicolor (BoRBAs) SoJ.AK nothosu bsp. (BECK) CHRTEK

In 1985, an interesting plant was found growing in the vicinity of Persi­caria lapathifolia (L.) S. F. GRAY subsp. lapathifolia behind the cottage colony near the beach "Grado" on the right bank of the river Labe N. of Celakovice. In 1987, two more plants were found growing between Persicaria lapathifolia (L.) S. F. GRAY subsp. lapathifolia and P. mitis (SCHRANK) AsENOV on the edge of the swamp on the right bank of the river Labe N . of Pfelouc ; in the swampy places of the road P . minor (Huns.) 0PIZ was also present. A more detailed study demonstrated that in both cases a hybrid Persicaria lapathifolia subsp. lapathifolia X P. mitis was involved.

The plants were ± straight, with stems only slightly inflated in the nodes, leaves lanceolate to narrowly elliptical, ± glabrous, dull green, with ocreas sparsely appressedly hairy, shortly ciliate above. The inflorescences were ± ~traight, cylindrical, interrupted below, perianth glabrous or with solitary glands. No fruits were set yet.

The plants cannot be identified with the hybrid P. lapathifolia subsp. lapathifolia with P. minor or P. hydropiper (L.) SPACH because they have a different combination of characters. Neither are they identical with the hybrid P. lapathifolia (L.) S. F. GRAY subsp. mesomorpha (DANSER) SOJAK X P. mitis (SCHRANK) AsENOV, the leaves of which are hairy to a various degree and to which the binom P. x bicolor (BoRBAS 1879) SoJAK Preslia 46 : 152, 1974 belongs. This name can be used for whichever combination of the species P. lapathif olia and P. mitis.

At the subspecific level two nothosubspecies have to be distinguished, viz. P. x bicolor (BORBAS) SoJAK nothosubsp. bicolor for the parent P. lapathi­folia subsp. mesomorpha and P. x bicolor (BoRBAS) SoJAK nothosubsp. silesiaca (BECK ) CHRTEK for P . lapathifolia subsp. lapathifolia:

2. A maranthils caudatus L. su bsp. saueri JEHLIK

When preparing an account of the Amaranthaceae for the Flora of the CSR, attention was paid to the infraspecific variation of Amaranthus caudatus L. in Czechoslovakia. Two distinct morphotypes were distinguished, one with dark (more original), the other with light seeds. They were treated as sub­species, following HEJNY ( 1948: 442-443) who distinguished A. caudatus L. subsp. alopecurus (HocHST.) MoQ. ( = subsp. caudatus) with seeds dark brown to black and A. caudatus L. subsp. leucospermum (S. WATSON) THELL. sensu HEJNY with seeds white or pinkish. The latter nomenclatural com­bination is invalid because it is based on Amaranthus leucospermus S. WAT­SON (Proc. Amer. Acad. 22: 446, 1887) which refers to the cultivated species A. hypochondriacus L., closely related to A. powellii S. WATSON widely dis­tributed in Czechoslovakia (see SAUER 1967: 111).

Distribution: Scattered in Czechoslovakia, most often in the vicinity of ornamental cultures in the Thermophyticum and Mesophyticurn. Elsewhere in Central Europe also more frequent than subsp. caudatus.
