Pronúncia (Português):2.3.2 Resposta: As unidades curriculares (UC) opcionais foram completamente reformuladas paraintegrar tópicos mais especializados e específicos das áreas correspondentes a cada um dosramos do curso. Mantém-se a flexibilidade que foi considerada um ponto forte do curso.Na coordenação dos cursos são envolvidos Investigadores do Instituto Português deOncologia de Lisboa Francisco Gentil (Cursos de Oncobiologia) e da Fundação Champalimaud(cursos de Neurociências). Estas alterações são integradas na nova versão das FUCcorrespondentes às UC opcionais.
3.1.6 Resposta: Nas descrições das unidades curriculares procurou encontra-se um equilíbrioadequado entre o rigor associado à descrição de conteúdos específicos e a flexibilidadenecessária para assegurar uma atualização permanente dos conteúdos em função dosdesenvolvimentos científicos mais recentes. Não obstante, para os módulos opcionais foramelaboradas novas FUC com descrições detalhadas e específicas de conteúdos.Resposta: Para além do orientador que tem a responsabilidade pelo acompanhamentocientífica do projeto de investigação, cada estudante é ainda acompanhado por um comitéde tese , como descrito na unidade curricular Projeto de Tese . Este comité procuraráidentificar potenciais desvios em relação ao plano de trabalhos inicial ou quaisquer outrosproblemas que possam surguir. A apresentação e discussão periódica sobre o progresso dostrabalhos contribuirá para minimizar dificuldades. Os membros do comité de Tese reunirãopelo menos duas vezes por ano para assegurar a consistência entre o acompanhamento dosprojetos dos diferentes estudantes. O coordenador procurará dirimir quaisquer conflitos quenão possam ser resolvidos por outros meios.
8.6 Resposta: O facto do presente curso ocorrer numa Escola Médica e em instituições deinvestigação associadas, cria um contexto único para a formação destes estudantes. Naregião de Lisboa existe outra grande Escola Médica (Faculdade de Medicina da Universidadede Lisboa) que não fornece qualquer curso de mestrado com estas caraterísticas.Resposta: Estes seminários estão previstos na UC Competências Nucleares emInvestigação e serão, no futuro, intensificados. A ligação às empresas é bastante facilitadaatravés do envolvimento do IBET (Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica) no

9.6 Resposta: Tratando-se da primeira edição do curso, nesta escola, não se afigurou fácilconsultar estudantes ou potenciais candidatos. No entanto, o coordenador do ciclo deestudos coordenou durante seis anos um curso semelhante na Universidade de Coimbra.Essa experiência permitiu incorporar no atual desenho do curso as opiniões dos estudantesdaquele mestrado da Universidade de Coimbra.

The syllabus will be taught and discussed in lectures addressing the current molecular
mechanisms underlying tumour development (cancer). The lectures will also serve to
introducethethemesandmodelsthatwillbeaddressedanddevelopedinpracticalclasses.

Throughoutthecourse,studentswillhavetheopportunitytopresentanddiscussscientific
papers with content relevant for oncobiology. This training will provide the basis for
students to prepare and present scientific papers based on results obtained in their own

O objetivo desta unidade é a aquisição de conceitos básicos de neurobiologiamolecular,
nomeadamente aprender quais os mecanismos moleculares responsáveis por processos

Além dos conhecimentos formais, os alunos devem ainda ficar familiarizados com as
principais abordagens experimentais utilizadas nestas áreas de modo a responder a

The objective of this curricular unit is the acquisition of basic concepts of molecular
neuroscience. Namely, to learn the molecular mechanisms involved in processes ranging
from neuronal specification, to the development of mature functional neurons. Besides
learning the syllabus, students should become familiarwith the experimental approaches
usedinthisarea,inordertoknowhowtoanswerrelevantscientificquestions.
In class, the students will attend seminars lectured by specialists in each of the covered
areas. Theywill also read relevant scientificpapers, andwill behave to try toextract the
informationlearnedpreviously.Studentswillthenbechallengedtopresentpaperstotheir

piersandtodiscussthemcritically,presentingtheweakandstrongpointsofeachpaper,the

Esta UC privilegia cursos lecionados por investigadores demérito reconhecido, que terão

possam sempre ser lecionadas. Pretende-se que nesta UC os alunos adquiram
conhecimentos básicos na área da neurociência molecular. Pretende-se que através de

This curricular unit values courses lectured by internationally recognized researchers, and
will have a programmatic flexible component in order to allow that themost up-to-date
questionscanalwaysbelectured.It isanobjectivethatthestudentsacquireknowledgein
theareaofbasicmolecularneuroscience.Byattendinglectures,andparticipatingincritical
discussionsontheproposedtopics,it isexpectedthatthestudentswillacquireknowledge
thatwill allow them to understand and apply lectured contents. Active discussionwill be
stimulatedinallphasesofthiscurricularunit.Theencouragementtoparticipate,resultsin
theengagementofthestudentsinthelecturedcontents,resultinginhigherlearningrates,
when compared to traditional teaching methods. We will privilege a model where the
presentationanddiscussionofseveralpossiblepracticalapproachesarepossible,onceagain
favoringandstimulatingcriticalthinkingand learning,whichwillbekeyforstudentstobe
abletoplantheirownresearchprojects.Itisexpectedthatbytheendofthiscurricularunit
students will have the skills necessary to design a project in the area of molecular
neuroscience.

UC.Tipicamenteos cursosavançadosopcionaisenvolverãoumacomponentemais teórica

A avaliação será baseada na apresentação e discussão do trabalho do estudante,
participação ao longodaUC, e numdocumento escrito quepermita aferir a aplicaçãode
conhecimentosasituaçõesconcretasdeinvestigaçãonaáreadocurso.

Teachingwill be based on a combination of research seminars, workshops, journal clubs,
together with practical classes, whenever possible. Teaching will be centered on the
students, with the objective of making them independent and capable to conceive and
developaproject in theareaofmolecularneurobiology. Typically, theoptionaladvanced
courses will be based on a combination of seminars and more work performed by the
student.
Theevaluationwill bebasedon thediscussionandpresentationof theworkdoneby the
student,itsparticipationinthecurricularunit,andinawrittentestwhichwillallowtolevel
all students for the application of knowledge acquired during the courses to concrete
situationsrelatedwithmolecularneuroscience.

In this curricular unit we will value teaching “by example” and through discussion in
detrimentof classical classes,where information is passively transmitted to students. The
objectivesofthiscurricularunitinvolvetheacquisitionofadvancedknowledgeintheareas
describedinthesyllabus,inthecontextofresearch.Studentswillalwaysbechallengedto
participateinallclasses.
Through seminars lectured by experts, studentswill learn how science progresses from a
question to its answer, andwhichmethodologies can be used.Witnessing first-handhow
researchers contribute to the advance of science, will contribute to the dedication and
motivationtolearnandunderstandthescientificprocess.Theworkshops,togetherwiththe
seminars, will allow the students to put into practice the knowledge and the strategies

centrais à Biologia do Desenvolvimento. Tendo como objetivos de aprendizagem: a
compreensão das bases moleculares e morfogenéticas envolvidas no desenvolvimento

Nesta unidade curricular os estudantes devem aprender os fundamentos moleculares e

das células somáticas, tais como a regulação e expressão de genes responsáveis da auto-

The importance of embryonic stem cells as a model to study molecular mechanisms
occurring in embryonic development, and conserved in differentiation of pluripotent cells
willbefurtheremphasized.Theuseofembryonicstemcellasatoolfordevelopinganimal
models serving for research or asmodels for diseasewill also be presented.Wewill also
emphasize the importance of stem cells in embryonic development both in mice and in

Amultidisciplinary learning is paired with an effectivementoring approach, in which the
students will be divided in working groups, with a tutor/group, accompanied by

Operíodo atual de desenvolvimento das neurociências é umdosmais estimulantes deste
campo, em grandemedida em resultado do cruzamento de avanços tecnológicos noutras
áreas do conhecimento, e do seu aproveitamento em favor da tentativa de responder às
grandes questões que se colocam quanto à função e disfunção do sistema nervoso. No
âmbitodamedicina,apesardosavanços formidáveisverificadosnoutrasáreas,asdoenças
neuropsiquiátricas permanecem como um dos maiores mistérios e desafios. Persiste no
entanto a esperança de que os avanços em neurociência, nomeadamente no estudo
integrativo de sistemas funcionais, permitam avanços também na compreensão e
tratamento dos síndromes clínicos mais complexos que envolvem o cérebro. O objectivo

field.Toalargedegree,thathasresultedfromtakingadvantageofprogressinotherareasof
knowledge,which has been conjoined towards answering the big questions regarding the
function and dysfunction of the nervous system. In the context of medicine, while
outstanding progress has been made in other areas, neuropsychiatric diseases persist as
someofthemostsignificantchallengesandmysteries.However,hoperemainsthatprogress
inneuroscience,namelyintheintegrativestudyoffunctionalsystems,willallowforfurther
progress inthemorecomplexclinicalsyndromesinvolvingthebrain.Themainobjectiveof
thiscurricularunitistoexplorethefundamentalaspectsofsystemsneurosciencethatallow
foran integratedvisionof thecentralnervoussystem,withaspecific focusontheaspects
thatareessentialtostudythemainclinicalconditionsinneuropsychiatry.Wewillconsider

Consistentlywith the learning objectives for this CU, the involved professorswill promote
coordinated teaching of subject matters and approaches that, while diverse, will be
integrated toallowstudents tobuildacoherentvisionof theCentralNervousSystem.We
expect that such coherent visionwill result from learning and integration of the different
methodologiesusedtostudythenervoussystem,aswellasfromlearningandintegrationof
theseveralhigh-levelfunctionsofthenervoussystemthatthecurriculumfocuseson.
On the other hand, in addition to their experience in several areas of knowledge, the
professors for this CU are also a team of clinicians, clinical science researchers and
fundamental science researchers, which should enable the student to build this coherent
visionbothintheperspectiveoffunction,aswellasthatofdysfunctionandneuropsychiatric
diseases and syndromes. Regarding the latter point, and given the preliminary level of
mechanisticknowledgeconcerningmostof thesediseasesandsyndromes,subjectmatters
will be presented considering the potential clinical applications resulting from progress in
each of the presented themes, at the levels of aetiology and physiopathology, as well as
diagnosisandtreatment.

promotion of the desired diversity of the programmatic offer, but alsowill assure that, in

eachtheme,studentswillbeexposedtothepathwaysofknowledgeleadingtocurrentstate-

subject, students will also be exposed to a seminar, whenever possible by researchers
specializingonthatspecificfield,allowingforamoredetailedcontactwithspecificprojects,
eitherrecentorongoing.
The practical component of the course will be based on workshops, with discussion of
scientificpapersandresearchproposals.Studentswillbeaskedtopresentscientificarticles
to their colleagues, anddiscuss themcritically. Furthermore,with theacquiredknowledge
andskills,theywillberequiredtodesignandpresentaresearchprotocol,relatedtooneof
thethemefromlectures.Performance inthisCUwillbeassessedaccordingtopreparation
for and presentation at workshops, and also consider, for at least 50% of the final

Osobjectivosdeaprendizagemconcretizam-seatravésdecursosesemináriosorganizados
para cada edição do curso num, ou numa combinação, de temas correspondentes aos
conteúdosprogramáticos.
Os temas a selecionar compreendem algumas das áreas científicas mas importantes
associadas ao envelhecimento e às doenças crónicas. Procura-se que os tópicos sejam
simultaneamente diversificados e incluamáreas de competência demostrada no CEDOCe
FCM. Os conteúdos serão sempre apresentados através de modelos baseados em
semináriosseguidosdediscussõespelosestudantes.
Os estudantes devem também adquirir os conhecimentos e competências num ou num
conjunto de tópicos associados aos mecanismos moleculares e celulares de disfunção

Estas discussões poderão ser complementadas coma análise crítica pelo alunode artigos

terapêuticas. Esta aprendizagem será acompanhada de forma tutorial, em que os alunos

This course is basedon seminars, designed toprovide suitablebackground information in
the topics (from contents) to be further explored by the students led discussions. These
debates are to be complemented by the student’s critical analysis of scientific papers on
newscientificapproachestoageingandchronicdiseases.
This learning process is to be paired with an effective tutorial approach, in which the
studentswillbedividedinworkinggroups,withatutor,accompaniedbyfaculty/researcher
availabletoshareknowledgeandofferguidance.
Evaluation will include a final project (50% of the final grade), class participation of the
student and the ability to argue (15%), to present and discuss scientific papers (15%),
successinapplyingacquiredknowledgetopharmacologicalprinciples(20%).
