Mensagem da Presidente: Happy New Year! Feliz Ano Novo! Bonne Année! Dear Friends, Colleagues and Members of the Lusophone Studies Association,

Greetings from our great North! As we start a new year, it is with enthusiasm that we reflect and look ahead to what will certainly be a great year. The LSA and its members have been quite active on a variety of fronts and, in addition to some of our members’ news published in this issue, we note some of our inspiring work. For instance, the LSA was a proud sponsor of a Capoeira Angola workshop and I was delighted to attend a great presentation by Michel Machado resulting from his post-doc research: “Brazilian Immigrant Entrepreneurship in Toronto: Preliminary Findings.” In addition to the great work that continues to be featured in the Portuguese Studies Review under the leadership of Ivana Elbl, some of members are organizing a symposium at the end of June at the Universidade da Beira Interior, Covilhã on Migration and Integration in the Lusophone World: Historical, Current and Future Perspectives. All information, including the Call for Papers is available on our site: www.yorku.ca/lsa. We are currently exploring some options regarding our next biannual conference in 2021. We are hopefully that we will be able to host it in beautiful Azores and we are in dialogue with our partners in the islands. Theme and Call for Papers will likely circulate end of Summer 2020 or early Fall, so all proposals can be peer-reviewed and participants notified within plenty of time for international travel. As always, we will seek attractive rates for nearby hotels. I look forward to seeing you all in 2021! No quadro deste importante evento, nosso membro Lorenzo Macagno organiza o painel Para um Oceano Índico africano: mobilidades, representações e narrativas (PAINEL 48) Coordenadores: Jessica Falconi; Lorenzo Macagno Instituições: Centro de Estudos sobre África e Desenvolvimento (CesA); Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR) RESUMO DO PAINEL Assumindo como central a relação entre África e o Oceano Índico, este painel pretende reforçar a articulação teórica e disciplinar entre os Estudos Africanos e os Estudos do Oceano Índico. De facto, enquanto espaço de circulação milenar de pessoas, ideias e objetos, o Oceano Índico permanece um domínio ainda pouco explorado no seio dos Estudos Africanos, comparativamente com o Atlântico, e sobretudo no que se refere aos períodos moderno e contemporâneo. Como diversos historiadores têm vindo a defender, a integração da costa e das ilhas africanas na esfera de influência do Oceano Índico constitui um posicionamento epistemológico

fundamental para um dimensionamento mais complexo e abrangente desta ‘arena inter-regional de interação económica e cultural” (Bose, 2006). Ao mesmo tempo, repensar África a partir do Oceano Índico enquanto perspetiva e categoria de análise convida a repensar também os trânsitos e as mobilidades africanas, asiáticas e europeias. Convocando um conjunto de tópicos recorrentes nos estudos do Oceano Índico, entre os quais os circuitos comerciais, culturais e religiosos, bem como as dinâmicas sociais e culturais – coloniais e pós-coloniais – das sociedades costeiras e insulares, este painel pretende estimular um diálogo transdisciplinar e comparativo sobre circulações e representações do Índico e suas múltiplas narrativas, no intuito de mapear uma “geografia transnacional do imaginário” (Gosh & Muecke, 2010). Panel: The Soft Power of Lusophony: City Networks and the New Nationalism Paper: Brazil’s Cultural Alliances in an Open World Brazil, like many countries around the world, is experiencing a rise of a new version of nationalism, showing a preference for isolationism and expressing distrust in globalization and regional integration. This paper will analyze how these changes in political orientation are affecting Brazil’s relations with its neighbors in Latin America and the member countries of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP). It

will first focus on the three levels of governance in Brazil: federal, state and municipal. While the new nationalism is prevalent at the federal level, it is not as evident in the state level and even less so in the municipalities. As an example of the autonomy of the municipalities and communities, this paper will focus on a program initiated in Brazil in 2004, “Cultura Viva” (Live Culture), which promoted digital links among communities across Latin America. These communities are now exchanging creative activities through a digital platform, www.iberculturaviva.org. However, the Cultura Viva program has not yet been implemented in the Portuguese-speaking cities outside Brazil, which share cultural roots and could benefit from a common digital cultural platform. The paper will explore how the Cultura Viva initiative could be spread among the Portuguese-speaking communities around the world, strengthening their common language and cultural values and traditions. Accordingly, one can conclude that a transnational network of such communities could be an instrument of “soft power” for a more democratic and culturally diverse open world.
