Como usar ‘there is’ e ‘there are’

Em inglês, as expressões there is e there are são utilizadas diariamente, pois servem para indicar que há ou existe algo em algum lugar. Por exemplo, em português, antes de fazermos as compras no mercado, podemos nos questionar “Tem leite na geladeira?”. Em inglês, a mesma pergunta vira “Is there milk in the refrigerator?”. Quando queremos informações sobre um evento que já aconteceu, podemos perguntar Were there too many people on the lecture last night?(Havia muitas pessoas na palestra ontem à noite?).

Por tanto, there is, there are e suas variações servem para falar

sobre a existência (ou ausência) de coisas ou mesmo pessoas.

There is/ There’s (singular) – há / existe

There are (plural) – há / existem

“There is”, “there are” e os tempos verbais

As formas negativa e interrogativa

Para formar frases negativas, basta acrescentar o not logo após o

uso da expressão. Ou, se preferir, a forma contraída do verbo to be

com o not, como você faria normalmente (com ou sem o there):

there is not vira there isn’t,

there are not pode ser there aren’t,

there was not passa para there wasn’t,

there were not é there weren’t

Para formar qualquer pergunta em inglês, basta inverter a ordem da

estrutura das frases afirmativas e colocar o auxiliar na frente do

sujeito (no caso, ‘there’). No presente e no passado, o verbo to be é

o próprio auxiliar.

Is there a drugstore near your school?

(Tem uma farmácia perto da sua escola?)

Were there four or five people on the room?

(Havia quatro ou cinco pessoas na sala?)

Os pronomes demonstrativos servem para demonstrar, apontar ou

referir-se a algo/alguém;

Sua aplicação está relacionada a posição (perto ou longe) e ao número

(singular ou plural);

Perto x Singular

Quando o objeto que está sendo referido estiver perto e no singular será

usado o pronome demonstrativo THIS

Exemplo:

This is a pen.

Longe X Singular

Quando o objeto que está sendo referido estiver longe e no singular será

usado o pronome demonstrativo THAT.

Exemplo:

That is a pen

De férias, no trabalho, passeando… Saber as horas é sempre importante. Isso

porque elas norteiam nosso dia. E saiba que, para responder a pergunta What

time is it?, você vai usar muito os números – os cardinais, claro. Aliás, o jeito

mais simples de dizer as horas em inglês é

It is…” seguido simplesmente dos números em inglês:

7:20 – It is seven twenty

4:35 – It four thirty-five

2:10 – It is two ten

É claro que, em inglês, como em português, há um jeito diferente de dizer o

número 30 para horas. Nosso “e meia usando

“"vira half past:

8:30 – It is half past eight

11:30 – It is half past eleven

Só que o inglês é mais arrojado e tem um jeito especial de dizer “quinze

minutos” também: a quarter.

3:15 – It is three and a quarter ou It is a quarter past three.

Aliás, esta estrutura com past pode ser usada com qualquer quantidade de

minutos abaixo de 30:

It is six twenty ou It is twenty past six

6:20 – It is six twenty ou It is twenty past six

5:10 –It is five ten ou It is ten past five

E quando estão faltando menos de 30 minutos para um determinado horário?

Usamos to com a próxima hora, assim:

6:45 – It is a quarter to seven

8:55 – It is five to nine

Você deve ter reparado que, até agora, só usamos horas de 1 a 12, não é?

Isso porque, em inglês, é mais comum usar horas de 1 a 12 e, depois,

usar PM para indicar se é um horário da tarde ou da noite e AM para dizer que

é um horário da madrugada ou da manhã.

Falando nisso, quando falamos do horário das 12h, podemos diferenciar

com AM e PM ou dizer:

Midday – meio-dia

Midnight – meia-noite

Só tome cuidado com as expressões para 12h, porque elas são mais comuns

com horas cheias. E, falando em horas cheias, com todas elas, podemos usar

a expressão o’clock:

8:00 – It is eight o’clock

10:00 – It is ten o’clock
