La Salle Flottante

A Escola São Paulo apresentará em setembro a obra La Salle Flottante do artista Thomas Hirschhorn no contexto da 29ª Bienal de São Paulo, abrindo uma oportunidade de proporcionar mais um espaço para reflexão e discussão sobre o binômio ‘arte-política’, mote desta edição da mostra internacional. A exposição está inserida no programa proposto pela Bienal, ao qual se articularam as mais importantes e relevantes instituições culturais da cidade - constituindo o Pólo de Arte Contemporânea de São Paulo – para potencializar as ações culturais e educativas.

O artista é conhecido por suas instalações potentes – verdadeiras estruturas arquitetônicas – que fazem referência à filosofia, política e cultura pop. Suas construções geralmente têm um ar caótico e são feitas com materiais baratos e efêmeros. Nelas também o artista coloca livros, manifestos e escritos seus, mapas e uma série de outras coisas.

La Salle Flottante integra um conjunto da obra do artista no qual por meio destas estruturas ele nos propõe reflexões sobre o ver, sobre modos de percepção do mundo, sobre as relações consumistas da sociedade contemporânea, que ele evidencia pelo uso de materiais usados, reciclados, por elementos e objetos do cotidiano; o trabalho ainda denuncia o uso e a manipulação produzida pelos meios de comunicação de massa, a propaganda e publicidade, sem deixar de referenciar e, também, homenagear personagens relevantes para a cultura e o pensamento contemporâneo.

A ‘arquitetura’ da sala e sua iluminação fluorescente, quase que hospitalar acentuam a proposição de suspensão do espaço que ele nos propõe a adentrar. Um jogo de examinar, sendo examinado; de ver, sendo visto, um espaço/display a nos atrair a atenção e nos conclamar a refletir sobre nossas ações cotidianas.

Escola São Paulo will present in Septmeber a Thomas Hirschhorn’s artwork called La Salle Flottante on the context of the 29th São Paulo Art Biennal, creating an opportunity to create another space for reflection and discussion about the “art-politics” binominal, this year international exhibition’s theme. The exhibition of this artwork is inserted on the program proposed by Biennal, on which the most important relevant cultural institutions of the city of São Paulo – establishing the Contemporary Art Pole of São Paulo – to boost both cultural and educative actions.

The artist is known for his potent art installations – real architectural structures – referencing to philosophy, politics and pop culture. His structures have generally a chaotic atmosphere and are made of cheap and ephemeral materials. The artist also uses books, his own manifestos and literary compositions, maps and many other things to create his artworks.

Biografia do artista

Thomas Hirschhorn nasceu em Lenzburg, Suíça, em 1957, vive e trabalha em Paris, França. Estudou desenho gráfico na Schule für Gestaltung em Zurich, Suíça. Participou do “Graphus”, um coletivo parisiense de designers comunistas.

Entre as inúmeras exposições de que participou, destacam-se as realizadas no Jeu de Paume, Paris (1994), Bienal de Veneza (1999), Museu de Arte Moderna de Nova York (2001), Documenta de Kassel (2002), Museu de Arte Moderna, Buenos Aires (2003), Centro Cultural Suíço em Paris (2004), Museu Serralves, Porto, e Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastrich (2005), Bienal de São Paulo e Centro Pompidou, Paris (2007), Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisboa (2008).

Premiado com o Joseph Beuys-Preis, pela Joseph Beuys-Stiftung, Basel (2004): o Rolandpreis für Kunst im öffentlichen Raum, pela Stiftung Bremer Bildhauerpreis, Bremen (2003), o Prêmio Marcel Duchamp, pela ADIAF, Paris (2000) e Preis für Junge Schweizer Kunst, pela Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft Exposition Wirtschaftslandschaft Davos, 2001 na Kunsthaus Zürich (1999).

La Salle Flottante integrates a set of the artist’s artworks, in which, by these structures, he propose us to reflect about seeing, about the ways of perception of the world, about the consumerist relations of the contemporary society, which he highlights by using recycled and used materials, objects and elements of our day-by-day life; his artwork also reveals the use and manipulation produced by means of mass communication, the advertising and publicity, referring to and also paying homage to important characters of the culture and contemporary thought.

The room’s “architecture” and its fluorescent lightning, which is similar to a hospital environment, highlight the proposal of abeyance of the space in which he invite us to enter. A game of perusing being perused; watching being watched; a space/display to call our attention and to incite us to think about our day-by-day actions.

Artist biography

Thomas Hirschhorn was born in Lenzburg, Switzerland, in 1957, and currently he lives and works in Paris, France. He studied graphic design at the Schule für Gestaltung in Zurich, Switzerland. He was part of “Graphus”, a Parisian collective of communist designers.

Among his many exhibitions, it is important to highlight those on the Jeu de Paume, Paris (1994); Venice Biennale (1999); Museum of Modern Art of New York (2001); Kassel Documenta (2002); Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires (2003); Swiss Cultural Center of Paris (2004), Serralves Museum, Porto; Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastrich (2005), São Paulo Art Biennal, São Paulo; Pompidou Center, Paris (2007) and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon (2008).
