It goes without saying that Gil Vicente is widely regarded to be “the Father of Portuguese Thea-tre”, and is our first national playwright as well as a poet of renown. He also wrote in Spanish, with this fact leading him, in the eyes of some, to assume a role in contributing to the birth of theatre and play-writing in Spain as well. This year, the legacy of Gil Vicente, the patron of this Festival which has been held in Guima-rães for decades, takes on greater weight with the premiere of “As Barcas”, (The Boats) the most recent creation from João Garcia Miguel, and “Jo-ane”, the latest performance from the Galician company, Voadora. The work of Gil Vicente, which spans the tran-sition period of the Late Middle Ages to the Re-naissance, represents the evolutionary period of a society which is questioning itself and is at odds with established institutions. This is the dawn of the counterpoint between the rigidity of hierarchy and social order and the opportuni-ty to question the established order. This is how we have chosen to face the Gil Vicen-te Festivals – as being a space for reflection, for questioning and restlessness, one that is a tool for widening cultural and human knowledge and growth. It is in the extensive literary works of Portuguese authors that we can understand other realities with the minute detail, realism and symbolism that one might have as if on a journey. And thus we have included Raúl Bran-dão – including him in this year’s programming through the performance called “Ilhas” (Islands), in its premiere by KANART.This year, the Gil Vicente Festivals will be the sta-ge for five shows enjoying their world premiere. These shows, presented for the first time on stage in a unique and never-to-be-repeated moment, will represent the epic marathon of the telling of the Lusíadas and will prove to mark one of the high points of the Festival. Active participation from the local community will allow for a one-of-a-kind performance beginning on June 9th and concluding on June 10th, the date which marks the 440th anniversary of the printing of “The Lusíadas”.In addition to the notion of artistic creation, pro-duction and co-production, the ideals of cultural democracy, access to culture and participation from the public sustain the programming which underlies the Gil Vicente Festivals. And the pro-gramming means little if it lacks the element of public participation, community goodwill, and systematic practices in favour of resigning itself to non-committal and passive attitudes. Thus we do our utmost to involve each and every person, motivating and sparking the interest in everyo-ne, and in so doing, valorizing each person’s con-tribution as unique and fundamental. Enjoy the show!

Contemporary Mysteries We have taken Gil Vicente’s texts (“Th e Boat to Hell”, “Th e Boat to Purgatory”, and “Th e Boat to Heaven”) as the basis of a creative work which for us is a journey.Th e texts and ideas of the founder of Por-tuguese theatre, Gil Vicente, have piqued our creativity, and they have been trans-formed into a work where words have been inscribed on the body, marking the

time and the space in which they reside. It is the emphasis on the me-dieval world and the origins of European and Portugue-se theatre which underlies the textual work and the focus on the classical sphe-re which the Company has been developing recently. It is an investment in the ex-ploration of fertile lands by way of rediscovery, one whi-ch diff erent perspectives on the world can offer us. In these journeys to a common past, we have encountered the medieval concept of “tur-ning the world inside out” in order to reveal its details, secrets and subtleties. Th is concept, given its operati-vity, has become one of the understated playwriting as-pects of the work as it is dra-maturgy geared toward the creation of contemporary mysteries.

Synopsis of the impossibleFor “Th e Boats”, a work ins-pired by a set of texts by Gil

Vicente, the prominent fi gure in Portu-guese medieval theatre, we have develo-ped a working system which unfolds in two directions and which we have sou-ght to bring together: the performance and the collection of interactive media and technologies which appear in real time. We return to the theme of jour-neys. We take up journeys to an impos-sible, unknown body, to a body lost in an empty labyrinth of feelings, condemned, a body impossible and out of time, turned inside out, a body which moves within a space beyond life, in a space which is the property of death. In the text we seek out the body, the skeleton and the muscle. We seek out the sensitivity beneath language, inside the secrets, the opaqueness of fe-

ma imprevisível e inesperada as coisas do mun-do.

elings, and the words as perspectives on the world. Th is group of texts gets the dead to speak of themselves, of their life and the ways they lived them. Th ese are texts which function as mirrors looking into a world, into an era. Th ese are texts about an impossible world.

A creative work is a political form The stage performance is a way to write about the ordinary world, which drives whatever is moving about beneath things. Th e stage performance moves about in and amongst various languages: that of thin-gs, bodies, images, words, feeling, narra-tives, sounds, smells, spaces, and times. In other words, everything that is the very substance of existing in a group, in socie-ty. It is a political expression, a privileged land of exploration which calls our perspec-tives of existence into question: it proposes, it imposes, it contradicts, it instigates, it provokes, and it denotes limits and special conditions. Th e stage performance is an art form which calls the very idea of art as a sin-gular product into question. It is a territory which places the creative work within the space of the public body as an entangling device. It is within this territory of perfor-mance in which the audience relates with the actors and the rest of the participating creative team.In this sense, the director’s closest collabora-tors, the actors, become performers in their translation of words into physical actions; in addition, the actors are also creators as they must necessarily become entwined in every instant, gesture, and breath, thus binding their presence with time and the ordinary world. Th e imperfection of a work, one of the conditions of a stage performan-ce, is revealed in this creative moment to the audience, they themselves creators of a public body, which in coming together and constructing itself, speaks, communicates, and questions the things of the world in an unpredictable and unexpected way. In invol-ving all those who have contact with and construct the piece, the stage performance becomes a political affi rmation, questions how the world is, and agitates as public res-tlessness and/or resigns itself as the indiff e-rence shown in public conformity.

Companhia João Garcia MiguelJoão Garcia Miguel began the Company in October of 2002. Since then, writing, crea-ting and research have been his main un-dertaking. He founded the “Espaço do Urso e dos Anjos” (Th e Space for the Bear and the Angels) in Lisbon, thus creating a promi-nent spot for working on and presenting cutting-edge visual and performing arts pieces. His investment in a contempora-ry repertory, together with his strong fo-cus on performing and plastic arts, has led João Garcia Miguel to increase the number of creative partnerships and co-productions he is involved with, becoming an Associa-ted Artist at Espaço do Tempo and at Casa dos Dias da Água.

A ENCENAÇÃO DE UMA PERFORMANCE É UMA FORMA DE ARTE QUE PÕE EM CAUSA A PRÓPRIA IDEIA DE ARTE ENQUANTO PRODUTO SINGULAR. É UM TERRITÓRIO QUE COLOCA A CRIAÇÃO NO ESPAÇO DO CORPO PÚBLICO, ENQUANTO DISPOSITIVO IMPLICANTE.

THE STAGE PERFORMANCE IS AN ART FORM WHICH CALLS THE VERY IDEA OF ART AS A SINGULAR PRODUCT INTO QUESTION. IT IS A TERRITORY WHICH PLACES THE CREATIVE WORK WITHIN THE SPACE OF THE PUBLIC BODY AS AN ENTANGLING DEVICE.

Living in a type of enclave, a territory that is a mix of urban ruins and the wreck of a stranded fl ying vessel, a strange group of people decides that they will separate from their native land and declare themselves an independent and new country. This new, tiny nation called Nióbio is made up of three inhabitants, a band and a lobster. And the band itself isn’t even all together…

For a nation to be a real na-tion, it needs to have its own history, laws and lan-guage, and if none of this exists at the outset, it can be created rather quickly. Th e new people of Nióbio will thus take all the necessary steps to have their newly-formed country recognized, from the selection of natio-nal symbols to diplomatic relations with international organizations, even dealing with long-term sustainabi-lity strategies. But despi-te all the commitment of the Founding Fathers (and only citizens) of Nióbio, the

country doesn’t seem to hold much promi-se for the future. Maybe this is because it cannot help but repeat the errors that brou-ght about the downfall of their original ho-meland.

APESAR DE TODO O EMPENHO DOS SEUS FUNDADORES (E ÚNICOSCIDADÃOS), A NAÇÃO DE NIÓBIO NÃO PARECE TER GRANDES HIPÓTESES DE FUTURO. TALVEZ PORQUE NÃO CONSEGUE DEIXAR DE REPLICAR OSERROS QUE DITARAM DEGENERAÇÃO DA NAÇÃO MÃE.

DESPITE ALL THE COMMITMENT OF THE FOUNDING FATHERS (AND ONLY CITIZENS) OFNIÓBIO, THE COUNTRY DOESN’T SEEM TO HOLDMUCH PROMISE FOR THE FUTURE. MAYBE THIS IS BECAUSE IT CANNOT HELP BUT REPEATTHE ERRORS THAT BROUGHT ABOUT THE DOWNFALL OF THEIR ORIGINAL HOMELAND.

Their only salvation may arrive in the making of a strategic alliance occurring through a marriage of convenience. Th is represents a great opportunity to put all of Nióbio’s glory on display in the organiza-tion of a grand social and cultural event. And of course there has to be a banquet – even if it means sacrifi cing the lobster, the only animal in the county and Nióbio’s na-tional symbol.

Visões ÚteisA theatre-oriented artistic group founded in Oporto in 1994, Visões Úteis calls the Fábri-ca Social its home. As of 2011, Visões Úteis has created and produced 36 theatrical per-formances, 4 audio-walks, a multi-media show, 4 fi lms and fi ve festivals in Portugal, Spain, France and Italy. Visões Úteis off ers primarily original shows, which it produces itself, in a multi-disciplinary arrangement where direction is shared and based on colla-borative work methodologies which call for the special participation of the entire artis-tic team. As an example of this collaborative identity, we cite the successive experiences in “Performance na Paisagem” (Performan-ce in the Landscape) – articulated through trips, artists-in-residence, heritage work and memories – as well as original playwri-ting, which is the result of long creative pro-cesses that unabashedly question not only our ‘here and now’ but also the ways the audience can participate. At Visões Úteis our aesthetic eff orts and scope continue to grow in harmony with a strong ethical motivation – we might even say political motivation – in our constant refl ecting on the contemporary meaning of what it is to do art and theatre, which each day underpins our options for work, sharpens our awareness of social and poli-tical responsibility toward the communi-ties which surround us, and compels us to share the processes of refl ection and auto-nomy in the contemporary arts with the po-pulation in general, and in particular with those who live on the outskirts, whether they be in terms of geography, gender, age group or ethnicity.Visões Úteis is a member of PLATEIA - As-sociação de Profi ssionais das Artes Cénicas (Association of Th eatre Arts Professionals) and IETM - International Network for Con-temporary Performing Arts.

“Th e Lusíadas” is a seminal work which has shaped Portuguese history and our collective memory, written as the journey from Lis-bon to Calicut on the trip to discover the sea route to India; it is also the synthesis and extension of all these journeys in a most memorable metaphor of one’s own life, one which has moulded the essence of the Por-tuguese soul and our identity as a people. As with great musical masterpieces, everything can be found contained in this work, cleverly insinuated in the rhythms, in the plays-on-words, in the pulses of thou-ght, in the humour and in the contrasts of how the action plays out.

NESTE ESPETÁCULO, ESTA GRANDE ESTÓRIA COM HISTÓRIA VAI SER CONTADA ATRAVÉS DE EPISÓDIOS E FACTOS REFERIDOS NUMA VIAGEM PROFUNDAMENTE AUTOBIOGRÁFICA COMO AS MAIS INGÉNUAS ESTÓRIAS INFANTIS E COMUNICADA PELO ATOR A PARTIR DO CORAÇÃO, QUE É A FORMA MAIS INTENSA DO ENTENDIMENTO.

IN THIS SHOW, THIS GREAT TALE OF HISTORY WILL BE RECOUNTED THROUGH EPISODES AND FACTS REFERRED TO IN CAMÕES’ DEEPLY AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL JOURNEY AS IF THEY WERE THE MOST INNOCENT OF CHILDREN’S TALES TOLD BY AN ACTOR FROM THE HEART, WHICH INDEED IS OUR MOST INTENSE FORM OF UNDERSTANDING.

In this show, this great tale of History will be recounted through episodes and facts re-ferred to in Camões’ deeply autobiographical journey as if they were the most innocent of children’s tales told by an actor from the he-art, which indeed is our most intense form of understanding. As a Company whose primary focus is the development of the actor’s skill, we unders-tand this project to be truly an exceptional one in which the performance and the com-mitment of the actor demands the utmost in talent and rigour as this is a great and illus-trious text, a true theatrical epic worthy of only the most gifted of actors. And at a time in our world today where all of us “Lusíadas” – all of us Portuguese – are being required to make almost super-hu-man eff orts just for our own individual and collective survival, the Teatro Meridional would like to continue to see how the sea is the horizon for all journeys, and in so doing, to praise, to spread forth and to sing out for all to hear just how much genius and art co-mes to our aid…“More than human strength did promise”…

António FonsecaHolding a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy, António Fonseca has been an actor since 1977. He was awarded the Municipal Gold Medal of Merit by the City of Oeiras. He was also nominated for the Portuguese Golden Globes in the category of Best Actor in a Play (2006) for his performance in “Waiting for Godot” directed by Miguel Seabra at the Teatro Me-ridional. He was nominated again this year for Best Actor in a Play for his role in “Ver-melho” (Red), directed by João Lourenço. He collaborates regularly in classes and training in the fi elds of Th eatre and Dramatic Expres-sion, with special mention of his participa-tion since 2000 in the Th eatre Arts and Edu-cation degree course given at ESECoimbra.

Teatro MeridionalTeatro Meridional is a Portuguese touring company which focuses intensely on the show and the individual performances of the actors, making each staged event an en-deavour in which experimentation and in-depth probing into the art are key. To date, the company has produced 43 shows, perfor-ming in 19 diff erent countries, in addition to taking to the road throughout Continen-tal Portugal and the islands of the Azores and Madeira. Since its founding in 1992, the Teatro Meridional has been acclaimed 22 times with awards in Portugal and 9 ti-mes internationally.

VOADORAESTREIA ABSOLUTA

Angel: You will pass, if you wish; Because in all your actions You never once did harm out of malice. Your simplicity suffices you As you delight in your pleasures.

“Joane” is an allegory to idiocy. This project took place in various phases and involved the collaboration of more than 50 actors working in different studios and taking up the theme of silliness and idiocy, beginning with the character of Joane, the Fool in “The Boat to Hell”. The result is a scenic landscape full of poetry, irony, nonsense, beauty, dance, monsters, and pop music. This is a fresh and evocative new look at a work by Gil Vicente.

Why “Joane”? Within the context of Portuguese drama-turgy, Joane is one of the more famous cha-racters although in all likelihood he is one who has been least written about. Th e un-restrained tongue, which is so fi tting for his role as the Fool, places him above Good and Evil. His situation of being someone without roots puts a clear vision of society on display, with its problems and defects. Rarely does a character of such low social standing dare to criticize the powers-that-be (either of this world or the celestial sphere) and emerge unscathed, without having su-

ff ered the least of consequen-ces. His is a fi gure which is fundamental for perceiving the distance between the Fool who is sincere and thus only speaks the truth, and those who esteem their status and will not admit to any error. In a time as irrational as ours, there is nothing like a fool to show us the way.

VoadoraVoadora is a company which came together in Santiago de Compostela in 2007 with a plentiful helping of joy, en-thusiasm, professionalism and talent. It offers a new way to do theatre characte-rized by the multiple perfor-mance skills of its members.

Th eir productions bring together live music, careful playwriting, a well-thought out aes-thetical concept and stage movement design based on choreographic reality. Th eir fi rst performance of “Common Places”, a trilogy presented from 2008 to 2012, garnered Vo-adora praise as one of the most interesting companies on the scene in Spain, earning them awards, and allowing for extensive touring which included the most relevant contemporary theatre festivals on the Ibe-rian Peninsula, as well as acclaim from cri-tics and audiences. Voadora is comprised of Marta Pazos, Hugo Torres and Jose Díaz.

What's in a name? That which we call a rose.By any other name would smell as sweet.Shakespeare, Romeu e Julieta

Domesticam-me.

History is quite full of these names: Antigone, Anthony and Cleopatra, Platonov, Hedda Gabler, Gianni Schicchi, and on down the list. Are these mere literary figures or did they at one time live and breathe? I never met them personally, yet they are quite present in my mind. And there, they are quite alive. They domesticate me. They live normal lives and are the neighbours of so many names, each one being an architect to my subjectivity, the building blocks of my world.

You pet it is! André e. Teodósio

So that the winds of time which seem to whisk everything away to oblivion do not end up victorious, I have decided to jot down those who are unnamed, the ones that are mine, those who may not be around to be marked down in history but who will still have an Identity Card and pay their yearly dues with me. A friend once encouraged me: “Even if you know that time will take the

better part, you still can’t help but making judgments today”. So, for the years I still have left in me, I am going to devote myself to the task of transforming friends into lea-ding characters of those things which still have stories to tell. And I am calling them the TOP MODELS. Paula Sá Nogueira will be the second inhabi-tant who will take shape in this way (follo-wing the Susana Pomba show – an urban myth). Th e shape of a bestiary.André e. Teodósio

Stray DogIt is not every day that we come to meet a person that we love. And to encounter that person in the same city as ourselves, well that is quite a rare thing indeed! Before we met each other I was already a type of secret Gogolian admirer of that stray dog. It follo-wed footstep and growled. Fate willed it that I would meet them in a theatre where my fi rst show was about to be performed (oddly, it was a text by Gogol) when they helped me to fi x the electrical cord on a lamp as they had seen how desperate I was to be done with something I was so clumsily trying to repair. Although what I write now is real in terms of what happened, my end-game

O Mal existe.

is a totally metaphorical one: the bulb that they helped me to light was the one inside my head, the head which was still behaving in mimetic artistic expression. Because this single being was more than a puppy, a lo-ver or a teacher: without them I am certain that I would not know what being alive is. Cão Solteiro (Stray Dog) is the most impor-tant companion in the world. You pet it is! André e. Teodósio

André e. TeodósioArtist, reference ornithologist, false biogra-pher, 35 years old, ist Slim (facts don’t) Fit (him): Art over Life. Mind over matter (here he comes). Head over Heels (he’s winning). A over Der (he leaves). Game over (we lose) – this means we really love him.

André e. Teodósio is a bit disorderly: he wakes up and starts thinking of the things that are tricky perform in a theatre show with a mimetic strategy: nightfall, dying, narrative entrances and exits, in fact, all the nightmares possible for anyone who wants to do theatre yet who is prone to thinking too much.

Here, the time-honoured mechanisms of theatre are not rejected but rather deemed as worn out and abandoned just after their death – the actor is the person who reacts within a hyper-real fiction and develops his discourse through citations, announ-cements, statements, naming, and enu-merating, even if in any exaggerated form, fleeing (running and screaming) from meta-phor – the sky is the limit. Any immediately recognizable object might well be appropria-te in that it aids directly in the creation of an aesthetic which is cast as Looking at the Future with Hope – the future is here and now, the opportunity to continue – Insul-ting is a means of expression as good as any other. Evil exists. You have to deal with it – The soul is an asset (but how much better if it sat still). Go in search of the Sublime (a fleeting moment of beauty).Cão Solteiro

KARNART C.P.O.A.A.ESTREIA ABSOLUTA

On the heels of the award-winning show “Hummus”, presented in December 2010 in Lisbon, KARNART C. P. O. A. A. is presenting the world premiere of “Islands” at the Gil Vicente Festivals, based on “The Unknown Islands” by Raul Brandão, a work which the author wrote in 1924 during a two-month trip to the Azores and Madeira.

KARNART C. P. O. A. A.

Th e show is the result of a closed playwri-ting session focusing on selected excerpts and text passages, later put into thematic groups, which then inspired sound atmos-pheres and suggested staging. Th e staging – for its part – subjected to previously col-lected soul-objects, took form and body in island-tables and ‘contaminated’ the actors-performers and gave birth to characters. “Islands” is an experience integrated into the concept which the KARNART collective is investigating, which off ers the audien-ce a choice of points of view and provides them with the discovery of individualized narratives: by always listening, the audien-ce moves about in areas of simultaneous representation, choosing what it wants to see, coming to encounter its own meaning for the show. Each one of the six “islands” is comprised of a table and an actor/performer. Th ese are inspired by the landscapes described by Raúl Brandão, and in his characters objects appe-ar which create compositions which recall painting and the cinema, whose composi-tion highlights, depict or make fun of the action of the text being heard in the voice-over done by a man.In addition to the performance at the Vila Flor Cultural Centre in Guimarães on June 15th, 2012, “Islands” will be presented el-sewhere in the country – namely at the Ci-nema-Teatro Joaquim de Almeida in Mon-tijo, on September 21st and 22nd, 2012; the Teatro Nacional São João in Oporto on Janu-ary 24th to 27th, 2013; the Teatro Municipal São Luiz in Lisbon on February 7th to 16th, 2013 – and a fi ve-week Artist-in-Residency in 5 islands of the Azores from June 24th to 27th, 2012, on the islands of Terceira, Faial, Pico, Flores and Corvo.

benefi ted, and still benefi ts from, the hono-rary participation of choreographer and tea-cher Gil Mendo, solicitor and gallery opera-tor Luísa San Payo, playwright and solicitor Luiz Francisco Rebello, lyric singer and vocal technique teacher Maria do Rosário Coelho, and solicitor and musician Pedro Oliveira.

Perfi nst – A concept being exploredTh e need to invent the Portuguese term “per-fi nst” emerged when Luís Castro, Portugue-se director and actor born in Mozambique in 1961 and responsible for the 1996 London show “Comb” faced a tough time naming a project of his which mixed the performance with the staging facilities, or “installations” of the venue. Th us, ‘perfi nst’ is a concept which blends the delving into the art of the artist which fl ows amongst the performance arts and the visual arts. Th e language of per-formance which uses theatrical, dance and body-art techniques and which may or may not require text (drama, romance, poetry, essays, etc.) presupposes the construction of characters which focus on rigorous inter-nal analysis whose expression may well be in words, movement or the ripping apart of physical limitations with one’s very body. Th e language of plastic arts – inspired by visual arts and the cinema – begins with the concept of space (one of normally un-conventional (re)presentation), of objects (which do not have to function as traditional show props), of characterization (markedly seen on the faces and bodies of the perfor-mers), and/or of image (animate or fi xed). Th e performing and the plastic languages co-exist in the show within independent pulses, touching upon each other, diver-ging, multiplying the chances for message, interrelating references, allowing each au-dience member to see the show in a diff erent way and to enjoy it with his own senses. Gi-ven the closeness of the actors and audien-ce in the show, ‘perfi nst’ strives to make each audience member feel the most of his feelings. His active participation could ri-ghtly infl uence how each day the course of the show is trod.In the world of ‘perfi nst,’ expressionist, Neo-realist or Butoh references may emer-ge, and they should spark multi-discipli-nary society-based crossroads. Th e inten-tion is to create large-scale aesthetic objects which have strong intervention-based im-pact, whether from the anthropological or sociological point of view, or even from the environmental or ecological point of view. Seen under the light of such a concept, KAR-NART was awarded two prizes in 2011 for its show “Hummus”, created in 2010 from the Raúl Brandão work – the fi rst as “Best Di-rection 2010” in the category of Visual Arts from the Prémio Autores 2011, SPA/RTP; and Special Mention from the Portuguese Th e-atre Critics Association, which noted the inspired and brilliant theatrical quality of the work of Raul Brandão.

AS LINGUAGENS PERFORMATIVA E PLÁSTICA COEXISTEM NO ESPETÁCULO COM PULSÕES INDEPENDENTES TOCANDO-SE, DIVERGINDO, MULTIPLICANDO HIPÓTESES DE MENSAGEM, INTERRELACIONANDO REFERENTES, PERMITINDO QUE CADA ESPETADOR POSSA VER UM ESPETÁCULO DIFERENTE E DESFRUTE DE SENSAÇÕES PRÓPRIAS.

THE PERFORMING AND THE PLASTIC LANGUAGES CO-EXIST IN THE SHOW WITHIN INDEPENDENT PULSES, TOUCHING UPON EACH OTHER, DIVERGING, MULTIPLYING THE CHANCES FOR MESSAGE, INTERRELATING REFERENCES, ALLOWING EACH AUDIENCE MEMBER TO SEE THE SHOW IN A DIFFERENT WAY AND TO ENJOY IT WITH HIS OWN SENSES.

Why bother doing theatre when people only think about summer and about love? Why bother with the hassle of the theatre when people only think about summer and about love? Why bother with the more prickly questions when people only think about summer and about love? Why bother troubling people’s minds? Why bother intending to sign up? Why bother learning the modern lexicon? Why bother with so much irony and multiple references? Why bother spending so many hours on the Internet in the hope of not letting your zeitgeist go? Why bother with so much downloading? Why bother making ideological and aesthetic enemies? Why bother burning the midnight oil to read The Benjamins by Badiou? Why bother getting wrinkles and white hair? Why bother when all we really want is summer and love?

A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream is to re-lax and enjoy. It’s always being on, wi-thout thinking about those who are off . It’s being treated like a prince and loving every minute of it. It’s feeling the current rush by and forgeeetttiiinng myseeeell-ff … It’s like inviting people over for din-ner and avoiding “certain topics of con-versation” so that no one gets annoyed and so that the conversation can fl ow im-maculately. It’s like driving on the mo-torway down to the Algarve, air-condi-tioning on maximum, Baroque music on the radio, your girlfriend next to you kissing your neck… and there they’re off , at 200kms an hour headed toward a fu-ture where a theme party is waiting for

them, a fashionable co-cktail bash and an astro-nomically high bill to pay all winter long.

With the Restoration of the English monarchy in 1660, King Charles II au-thorized the formation of two theatre companies, one for himself and the other to serve his bro-ther, the Duke of York. It was at that point (and infl uenced by the French court of King Louis XIV) that the “theatre of ma-chines” was born – spec-tacular, exuberant, exces-sive and megalomaniacal – a story in which Henry Purcell’s “Th e Fairy Que-en” off ers a magnifi cent epilogue. Loosely based on Shakespeare’s “Mid-summer Night’s Dream”, Purcell composed the mu-

sic for a show whose second version in 1691-92 included such expensive and ex-travagant special eff ects that despite its critical success it ended as a fi nancial di-saster. Part of the show was a gigantic waterfall and six dancing monkeys. In “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” Teatro Praga relives these times. A festive com-memoration in the pursuit of happiness, as a tribute to Purcell’s power and sound, and done in the tastes of the time, ours.

É sentir a corrente passar e esqueceeeeeeeer-me de miiiiiiiim…

IN “A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM” TEATRO PRAGA RELIVES THESE TIMES. A FESTIVE COMMEMORATION IN THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS, AS A TRIBUTE TO PURCELL’S POWER AND SOUND, AND DONE IN THE TASTES OF THE TIME, OURS.

Teatro PragaO Teatro Praga is a group of artists (André e. Teodósio, Cláudia Jardim, José Maria Vieira Mendes, Patrícia da Silva and Pedro Penim) who work without a director and who seek to highlight the “never before to be repea-ted” quality of the theatre. Performances are always diff erent; they are in constant metamorphosis, subject to unpredictable variation of themselves. A show is an event which, without any disregard to the phy-sical condition of the theatre (that of being fi ction), reaches out for “the audience’s hi-ghest level of responsibility”, or in other words, the encounter with a community in the midst of a fi ctional chaos. Teatro Praga began in 1995 and is based out of Lisbon. It regularly collaborates with some of the most prestigious cultural ins-titutions in Portugal and has presented at festivals and theatres in a number of Euro-pean countries: Italy, UK, Germany, France, Hungary, Slovenia, Estonia and Denmark.

Th e Músicos do Tejo Marcos Magalhães and Marta Araújo are the founders of this new group dedicated to ear-ly music. Th e Músicos do Tejo use period instruments in their performances of early music, whose following and popularity are growing in Portugal, and have been specifi -cally guiding their repertory toward original pieces and avoiding those that represent the usual fare. Th e Músicos do Tejo had their fi rst performance in Setúbal in December of 2005 and since then they have presented audiences with a wide range of program-mes, from Portuguese sacred music to the Baroque origins of fado, as in their recor-ding, “Sementes do Fado” (Seeds of Fado). In 2008, they premiered the opera “La Spi-nalba” by Francisco António de Almeida and directed by Luca Aprea in the Small Audito-rium of the Belém Cultural Center (CCB). Afterwards, they were invited back to the CCB for other opera collaborations, as in the premiere of “Lo Frate Nnamurato” by G.B. Pergolesi, performed in 2009.

WRITING FOR THE THEATRE LUÍS MESTRETHEATRE/PLAYWRITING WORKSHOP

In these two sessions, we intend to travel ami-dst the words which the actors will pronounce...those spoken out on the stage. We will address the basic points of writing for the theatre and for each topic create the neces-sary tools for playwriting. Th rough exercises, concepts, examples, analysis of dramatic texts, and viewing of excerpts from shows and fi lms, we will create the base structure to begin the building of that play which you always dreamed of writing. We will also have time to study some authors and their relationship with the theatre, and to share experiences and opinions. “Writing for the Th eatre” is geared toward young people aged 16 to 21 who are interested in thea-tre arts, whether you adore the writing or not…yet those who have always wanted to be an ac-tor and have delighted in the written word and have taken pleasure in the enjoyment of the au-dience at your work.
