• Portugal emerged as a country in 1143, the first king was Dom Afonso Henriques, our borders are some of the oldest in Europe. We were a monarchy until 1910, when republicans instaured a new government –The Republic, we were a ditactorship from 1932 to 1974, and we belong to the European union since 1986. The capital is Lisbon.

•Madeira Archipelago is situated in the Atlantic Ocean, 500km distant from Africa, 1000km from the European Continent, and only 1h30m air flight from Lisbon.

The island of Madeira was discovered by Tristão Vaz Teixeira, Bartolomeu Perestrelo and João Gonçalves Zarco, two Portuguese explorers, in 1419, which dubbed the island ‘Madeira’ (“wood” in English) due to the abundance of this raw material.Noticing the potential of the islands, as well as its strategic importance, the colonization of the islands began in 1425.At the beginning of its settlement, some agricultural crops, such as cane sugar, were introduced, which quickly afforded the Funchal metropolis frank economic prosperity. This meant that, in the second half of the fifteenth century, the city of Funchal became a mandatory port of call for European trade routes.

With a unique geographical position and a peculiar orography, Madeira Island presents a mild climate with very soft average temperatures and a moderate humidity. The average temperature in the summer is 23oC and 17oC in the winter. On the other hand, the average sea temperature in the summer is 22oC and 18oC in the winter due to the Hot Gulf Stream.Madeira Island is equally famous for its nice and kind people.

Thee seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were marked by the emergence of a new culture that would boost the Madeira economy again: wine.

Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Madeira flourished for the birth of the tourism sector, quickly becoming a mandatory reference for the European aristocracy that has set temporary residence here, attracted by the natural therapeutic qualities of the island.In 1976, Madeira became an Autonomous Region of Portugal, thus having the power to legislate.

Madeira Island is equally famous for its nice and kind people, for the beauty of its landscapes and for the natural patrimony, namely the Laurissilva Forest, classified by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage.

Besides Madeira, the Archipelago is constituted by another inhabited Island, Porto Santo, and also by the non-inhabited Islands of Desertas and Selvagens.

The cultural patrimony deserves a special attention not only in what concerns its traditional products, but also its monuments, museums, churches and other relevant buildings.

Our school and experience with diversity and inclusion

• Our school has always have a great tradition when it comes to accept students with special needs.

• During the 2016/17 school year, our school had around 120 students with special needs.

Most of the SEN students follow the regular curriculum and, are “full time” with their classes. The other ones, besides having a specific curriculum designed according to their needs, are “part-time” in some subjects in the class to which they belong to.

The School offers a structured teaching unit for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Eight students are part of this unit.Even though they are not full-time in a regular class, they still partake in some activities with the other students.
