Easter Sunday (Cycle B) The tomb was empty. In the early morning darkness of that first Easter, there was only confusion for Mary Magdalene and the other disciples. But as the daylight spread, they saw the dawning of a new crea-tion. At first they didn't understand the Scripture, to-day's Gospel tells us. We don't know which precise Scripture texts they were supposed to understand. Perhaps it was the sign of Jonah, who rose from the belly of the great fish after three days (see Jonah 1:17). Or maybe Hosea's prophecy of Israel's restora-tion from exile (see Hosea 6:2). Perhaps it was the psalmist who rejoiced that God had not abandoned him to the nether world (see Psalm 16:9-10). Whichever Scripture it was, as the disciples bent down into the tomb, they saw and they believed. What did they see? Burial shrouds in an empty tomb. The stone removed from the tomb. Seven times in nine verses we hear that word - "tomb." What did they believe? That God had done what Jesus said He would do - raised Him up on the third day (see Mark 9:31; 10:34). What they saw and believed, they bore witness to, as today's First Reading tells us. Peter's speech is a summary of the gospels - from Jesus' baptism in the Jordan to His hanging on a tree (see Deuteronomy 21:22-23), to His rising from the dead. We are children of the apostles, born into the new world of their witness. Our lives are now "hidden with Christ in God," as today's Epistle says. Like them, we gather in the morning on the first day of the week - to celebrate the Eucharist, the feast of the empty tomb. We rejoice that the stones have been rolled away from our tombs, too. Each of us can shout, as we do in today's Psalm: "I shall not die, but live." They saw and believed. And we await the day they promised would come - when we, too, "will ap-pear with Him in glory."

27th Sunday in Ordinary Time Because of his faith, the just man shall live. We hear in today's First Reading the original prophetic line made so central by St. Paul (see Romans 1:17; Gala-tians 3:11; Hebrews 10:38). We are to live by faith in Christ who loved us and gave himself on the Cross for us (see Galatians 2:20). The world, though, can seem to us as seventh-century Judah seemed to Habakkuk - in the control of God's enemies. The strife and discord we face in our own lives can sometimes cause us to wonder, as the prophet does, why God doesn't seem to hear or intervene when we cry for help. We can't let our hearts be hardened by the trials we undergo. As today's Psalm reminds us: Israel forgot His mighty works, lost faith in the sound words of His promise. They tested God in the desert, demand-ing a sign. But God didn't redeem Israel from Egypt only to let them die in the desert. And He didn't ransom us from futility only to abandon us in our trials. He is our God and we are the people He shepherds always - though at times His mercy and justice seem long de-layed. If we call on the Lord, as the Apostles do in today's Gospel, He will increase our faith, will stir to a flame the Holy Spirit who has dwelt within us since Bap-tism. As Paul tells us in today's Epistle, the Lord will al-ways give us the love and self-control we need to bear our share of hardship for the Gospel - with a strength that can come from God alone. Our task is to continue doing what He has command-ed - to love and to build up His kingdom - trusting that His vision still presses on to its fulfillment. or His vision still has its time. One day, though we are but "unprofitable servants," we will be invited to eat and drink at our Master's table. It is that day we an-ticipate with each celebration of the Eucharist.

The vision of Pope Leo XIII Exactly 33 years to the day prior to the great Mir-

acle of the Sun in Fatima, that is, on October 13, 1884, Pope Leo XIII had a remarkable vision. When the aged Pontiff had finished celebrating Mass in his private Vatican Chap-el, attended by a few Cardinals and members of the Vatican staff, he suddenly stopped at

the foot of the altar. He stood there for about 10 minutes, as if in a trance, his face ashen

white. Then, going immediately from the Chapel to his office, he composed the above prayer to St. Michael, with instructions it be said after all Low Masses everywhere.

When asked what had happened, he explained that, as he was about to leave the foot of the altar, he suddenly heard voices - two voices, one kind and gentle, the other guttural and harsh. They seemed to come from near the tabernacle. Satan was boasting to the Lord that he could destroy the Church.

In 1886, Pope Leo XIII decreed that this prayer to St. Mi-chael be said at the end of "low" Mass (not "high", or sung Masses) throughout the universal Church, along with the Salve Regina (Hail, Holy Queen); and the practice of the congregation praying these prayers at the end of Mass continued until about 1970, with the introduction of the new rite of the Mass.

John Paul II and St. Michael

However, at the end of his Angelus message given in St. Pe-ter’s Square, Sunday, April 24, 1994, Pope John Paul II urged Catholics to recite this prayer to Saint Michael once again:

"The prayer can fortify us for that spiritual battle about which the Letter to the Ephesians speaks: "Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power."(Ephesians 6:10). And to this same battle that the Book of the Apocalypse refers [to], recalling in front of our eyes the image of St. Michael the Archangel (cf. Revelations 12:7). Surely, this scene was very present to Pope Leon XIII, when, at the end of the previous century, he introduced to the entire Church a special prayer to St. Michael: ‘St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil… ’

Pope Francis

Once again, especially in the face of an increasing scandal and division within the Church, Pope Francis feels strongly that Sa-tan is to blame and has enlisted the help of St. Michael the Archangel. He asks all to pray this prayer, especially with the rosary and I think it would be good also at the end of Mass.

THE PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL

Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in bat-tle; be our protec-tion against the wickedness and snares of the dev-il. May God re-buke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O prince of the heavenly

host, by the power of God, thrust into Hell, Satan and all the other evil spirits, who prowl throughout the world, seek-ing the ruin of souls. Amen

THE SALVE REGINA HAIL HOLY QUEEN

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,

our life, our sweetness and our hope! To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears! Turn, then, O most gracious Advo-cate, your eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Paróquia Santo António Cambridge, MA

A Visão do Papa Leão XIII Exactamente à 33 anos atráz e antes do Milagre

bate, sede o nosso auxílio contra as maldades e as ci-

ladas do demónio. Instante e hu-

mildemente vos pedimos que De-us sobre ele im-

pere.
