    Aluminum Cyclone25 mm - Catalog No. 225-01-0137 mm - Catalog No. 225-01-02

The SKC Aluminum CycloneThe SKC Aluminum Cyclone is a lightweight respirable dust sampler that is used with afilter loaded into a three-piece filter cassete. The filter material, pore size, and the supportpad must be selected as specified by the sampling method used. The cyclone separates thedust particles according to size. The respirable particles collect on afilter for analysis whilelarger particles fall into the grit pot and are discarded.

    Flow rate: 2.5 L/min for ACGIH/ISO/CEN Convention (nominal D=4.0 m)*2.8 L/min for alternate applications (nominal D=3.5 m)

    * As previously published, aflow rate of 2.6 L/min will give a 4 m cut-point, however, 2.5 L/minwill give a beter match over the entire curve.

Determined using experimental data obtained at flows from 2.0 to 4.0 L/min

Note: The ACGIH/ISO/CEN Curve (Soderholm) Convention requires using the flow rate thatminimizes the bias of the cyclone separation from the convention curve.

OperationAssembly1. Disassemble a three-piece cassete and setaside inlet section (usually marked inlet).Remove plug from cassete outlet.

    2. Select a filter and support pad as specifiedin the sampling method. Insert cassete ring(middle) section into cassete outlet (see Figure 1).

    3. Insert cyclone into cassete ring and pressfirmly. Leave grit pot in place during calibrationand sampling.

    4. Insert cyclone/cassete assembly throughlarge opening of filter cassete holder (see Figure3). Ensure assembly is seated firmly in holderby inserting the cyclones side pin (small roundnodule on rim of cyclone) into the notch in thefilter cassete holder.

    5. Secure assembly in holder by stretching thespring-loaded hold-down plate over the cassete.Insert adapter (located in end of rubber tubing)into cassete outlet.

Calibration1. Prepare a cyclone/filter cassete assembly (see Assembly).Calibrate the cyclone with grit pot in place.

    2. Moisten O-ring inside large end of calibration chamber (Cat. No. 225-01-03, see Figure 2) and push chamber over cyclone stem until it fits snugly.

    3. Connect the Tygon tubing atached to the filter cassete holder to the inletof a sampling pump. Using flexible tubing, connect the calibration chamber toa calibrator.

    4. Following instructions in the pump and calibrator manuals, calibrate to

    requiredfl

ow rate (see reverse side).5. Disconnect calibrator and replace filter used to set flow with a freshweighed filter (unused) for sample collection.

Sampling1. Ensure flow rate has beencalibrated (see Calibration).

Warning: Leave grit pot in placeduring calibration and sampling.

    2. Connect the Tygon tubingatached to the filter cassete holder

to the inlet of a sampling pump.3. Clip cyclone/filter casseteassembly onto a workers collar orpocket near the breathing zone.

    4. Start pump and record pertinentdetails.

    5. At the end of the sampling period, stop pump and record finish time. Removecyclone/filter cassete assembly from cassete holder. Separate cyclone from cassete.Reassemble inlet section of cassete, ensuring the inlet and outlet are sealed with plugs.Send cassete and all data to a laboratory for analysis.Note:Particles collected in the grit pot do no t represent any part of the respirable dust sample andshould be discarded.

    6. Prior to further sampling, clean all parts of the cyclone, including the interior of the gritpot, with mild soapy water. The cyclone may be wiped with a clean dust-free tissue, airdried, blown dry, or wiped with isopropyl alcohol.
