SITUAÇÕES COTIDIANAS - EVERYDAY SITUATIONS
O que falo em tal situação? Como falo em inglês? Saiba aqui!
cultura, também incluímos nesta seção as subseções "Inside the United States" e

How many Kisses?
You must remember this: you were going in for a double European-style greeting kiss with a friend who was expecting
only a single cheek peck. It's an awkward question that constantly creates trouble for travelers: how many times should
you pucker up? Here's a handy guide:
One: A single buss is acceptable in the U.S., but it's mostly a big-city phenomenom. Women will give a brief hug, while
men shake hands. In the Middle East, one kiss on the lips is a normal greeting, but not between men and women.
Two: Double up in Spain, Austria, Sweden, Hungary and, more recently, in Britain.
Three or more: Triple kisses will work in Egypt, Russia, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Business in Belgium? Three
kisses are a sign of respect for those at least 10 years older than you. Pack your lip balm in France; many people still
insist on four kisses.
Keep your lips to yourself: Germans rarely greet with a kiss. In Chile, opt for an abrazo (a handshake / hug hybrid).
Skip the kiss and bow or shake hands instead when visiting Japan, China and Korea.
(Source: Time, March 15, 2004, p.63)
Vocabulary:
go in for (phrasal verb) - be interested in, participate in
greeting - salutation
peck - quick light kiss
awkward - embarrasing, incovenient
pucker up (phrasal verb)- get your lips ready to kiss
handy - accessible, available
buss (slang) - a friend kiss

Quantos beijos?
As mulheres

"Can I ask you how old you are?", a "pergunta embutida" "...how old you are?" não segue as mesmas regras gramaticais
where, etc. Assim, o correto é falar Can I ask how old you are? e
não Can I ask how old are you?

Talking on the Telephone
When you're in another country, you'll notice that the way people talk to each other on the
telephone is propably different than it is in your own country. That's why it is good to learn the
country's "telephone etiquette" so you can make your calls more easily and avoid any possible
misunderstandings between you and the other person on the other end of the line.
- If you call someone, don't ask the person who answers the phone who he nor she is, unless you
first tell that person who you are and who you wish to speak to. It may sound offensive for who is
hanging the phone on other end of the line, especially if the caller had not identified himself first.
- The person you're calling will answer the phone by saying hello (or just yeah? if the person's in a bad mood). You are
then expected to state who you wish to speak to and identify yourself.
"I'd like to speak to Steve. This is his friend Cynthia from Brazil"
If you don't identify yourself, the person at the other end of the line will probably ask who you are. This
might be because people are inundated daily by salespeople, prank callers, and all sorts of other
unwanted calls. They want to make sure that you're not one of them (or, for that matter, their mother-in-
law, boss, or landlord).
After you have identified yourself, the person on the other end will propably say something like this:
"Just a minute, I'll go see if he/she is there."
"Hang on (hold on) a second (sec), please."
"Yes, I'll go call him/her. One second (sec)."
If the person you want to speak to is not there, you may be asked if you wanted leave a message, that is, where and
when you can be reached and why you called. Here's an example.
- Hi. This is Cynthia, is Steve there?
- No. he's not. Do you want to leave a message?
- Yes, just tell him I'll be at home tonight if he wants to get together.

"I'd like to speak to Steve. This is his friend Cynthia from Brazil" [Eu gostaria de falar com o Steve. (Aqui) É a
Cynthia, do Brasil.]
"Just a minute, I'll go see if he/she is there."
"Hang on (hold on) a second (sec), please." (Aguarde um instante, por favor.)
"Yes, I'll go call him/her. One second (sec)."
Veja o exemplo:
- Hi. This is Cynthia, is Steve there? (Oi. Aqui quem fala é a Cynthia, O Steve está?)
- No. he's not. Do you want to leave a message? (Não, ele não se encontra. Você quer deixar algum recado?)
- Yes, just tell him I'll be at home tonight if he wants to get together.
à noite se ele quiser me encontrar.)

Durante a ligação During the call
Oi (Maria). Que bom que você ligou. Oh, hi (Maria). I'm glad you called.
Recebi seu recado, obrigado. I got your message, thanks.
Ah, que bom. Estava esperando sua ligação. Oh, good, I've been expecting your call.

Só um momento/Só um segundo. Tem alguém na
outra linha.Just a second. I have another call.
Dá para me ouvir bem? Can you hear me OK?
Posso ligar para você de volta? Can I call you back?
Quer que eu te ligue de volta? Do you want me to call you back?
This calling must be costing you a fortune.
Estou no meio de um negócio aqui. Posso ligar para
você mais tarde?
I'm kind of in the middle of something right now. Can I call
you back?
Olha, eu tenho que ir agora. Eu... Oh, you know what? I have to go. I...
Eu já ligo para você. I'll call you right back.
Qual é o seu número mesmo? What's your number again?
Problemas durante a ligação Problems during the call
Desculpe-me, caiu a linha. Sorry, we got cut off.
Essa ligação está péssima. I think we got a bad line.
Estou ouvindo você muito mal. I can barely hear you.
Estou ouvindo um eco. I'm getting an echo.
If you made a mistake and dialed the wrong telephone number, the person you're talking to
might say something like this:
- Sorry, I'm afraid you have the wrong number
or
- I'm sorry, but there is no one here by that name.
In that case, just say I'm sorry and try dialing the number you want again. Don't ask if you've
dialed a certain number and especially don't ask WHICH number you've dialed. This is
considered offensive and even provocative since you can easily obtain the person address by
having just a phone number (and robe the house or make obscene phone calls etc.).
Assuming now that you've succeeded in dialing the right number and have spoken to the right
person, you can end the conversation in a number of ways.
The most common thing to say is bye-bye or just bye (not good-bye, which is commonly used
when you're speaking to someone in person but sound rather abrupt on the telephone). You can
then say something like: see you later; take it easy; take care...
As we mentioned previously and as you may note, americans and britons are not openly
affectionate people, and sending kisses and hugs over the phone is quite strange to them,
especially to the men. With this in mind it's propably better to keep your closing comments as
simple, brief and non-intimate as possible.
[Tradução do texto acima]
- Sorry, I'm afraid you have the wrong number. (Desculpe, que acho que você discou o número errado.)
ou
- I'm sorry, but there is no one here by that name.
Você pode então falar algo como: see you later
(até mais), take it easy, take care (se cuida)...
Terminando Finishing
Preciso desligar. Listen, I have to go.
Então tá bom... OK, then...
Gostei de falar com você. It was nice talking to you.
Vamos marcar alguma coisa. But let's get together sometime...
Um beijo./Um abraço.* Take care.
Até mais. See you.
Tchau. Bye.
Um simples see you ou take care é suficiente nessa horas.

Clothing Sizes
Any tourist's guide will stress the importance of packing the right clothes before taking
off. For example, if you're planning on visiting Chicago on December, you'd better not
forget to take along some heavy clothes because winter temperatures below zero are
quite common in the "Windy City".
During your trip, you also might want to purchase some more clothes and footwear, in
which case, it's important that you be familiar with system of sizes from USA, UK,
Ireland and Europe comparing with the brazilian one. The following simple conversion

Tamanho (size): Corresponde à largura e comprimento.
As
a Marshalls.

Escrevendo a data - Writing the date
Apresentamos a seguir alguns formatos típicos:
FormatoBritânico:
Dia - Mês - Ano
Americano:
Mês - Dia - Ano
A the Twenty-fourth of February, 2009 February, the Twenty-fourth, 2009
B 24th February 2009 February 24th, 2009
C 24 February 2009 February 24, 2009
D 24/2/2009 2/24/2009
E 24/2/09 2/24/09
F 24/02/09 02/24/09
impersonal business letter).
(official or technical document).

Falando a data - Speaking the date
30 March 1993 = "March the thirtieth, nineteen ninety-three" (No inglês americano, também "March thirtieth...") ou "the
thirtieth of March, nineteen ninety-three"
1200 = "twelve hundred"
1305 = "thirteen hundred and five" ou "thirteen O five"
1498 = "fourteen (hundred and) ninety-eight"
1910 = "nineteen (hundred and) ten"
1946 = "nineteen (hundred and) forty-six"
2000 = "two thousand"
2009 = "two thousand and nine"
Para anunciar a data, utiliza-se:
It's May the first.
What's the date (today)? - Que dia é hoje?
What date is it? - Qual é a data (disto)? / Quando é (um acontecimento)?
What date is (your birthday)? - Que dia é (o seu aniversário)?
BC and AD = a.C. e d.C.
abreviaturas BC (= Before Christ - antes de Cristo - a.C.) e AD (= Anno Domini - em Latim in the year of the Lord - "no
Julius Caesar first came to Britain in 55 BC.
The emperor Trajan was born in AD 53 / 53 AD. (O emperador Trajano nasceu em 53 d.C)
Dizendo as horas - Telling the time
8.05 - eight (oh) five OU five past eight
8.10 - eight ten OU ten past eight
8.15 - eight fifteen OU a quarter¹ past eight
8.25 - eight twenty-five OU twenty-five past eight
8.30 - eight thirty OU half² past eight
8.35 - eight thirty-five OU twenty-five to nine
8.45 - eight forty-five OU a quarter to nine
8.50 - eight fifty OU ten to nine
9.00 - nine o'clock
8:57 - Three minutes to nine (mais natural que three to nine)
A expressão o'clock é utilizada somente em horas cheias. Compare:
Wake me at seven (o'clock), please. (7:00)
Wake me at ten past seven.
OK, see you at half two (=...half past two.) - (2:30)
No inglês americano, com frequência utiliza-se after em vez de past (ex. ten after six), mas os americanos não falam half
after. Além disso, no inglês americano, em vez de to, pode-se empregar of,before e till. Exemplo: twenty five of three
(2:35).
Perguntando que horas são - Asking what time it is
What time is it? / What's the time? - Que horas são?
Have you got the time? (informal) - Você tem horas?
Could you tell me the time? (mais formal) - Você poderia me dizer as horas?
What time do you make it? or What do you make the time? - Comum no inglês britânico, significando "What time is it
by your watch?"
Sorry, I don't have my watch on - Desculpe-me, estou sem relógio.
My watch is a little slow/fast. - Meu relógio está um pouco atrasado/adiantado.
According to my watch, it's... - De acordo com o meu relógio, são...
O relógio de 24 horas - The twenty-four hour clock
Compare:
- Last check-in time is 20.15.
We have to check in by a quarter past eight in the evening.
- The next train from platform 5 is the 17.53 departure fo Carlisle.
What time does the next train leave? ~Five fifty-three.
- The meeting will begin at fourteen hundred.
We're meeting at two o'clock.
hora. a.m. (= Latim ante meridiem - "before midday") significa de manhã ep.m. (= post meridiem - "after midday") indica
09.00 = nine o'clock in the morning (or nine am)
21.00 = nine o'clock in the evening (or nine pm)

Cultural tips on hotels - Dicas culturais sobre hotéis:
estacionamento, e normalmente é localizado no subsolo.
Compromissos - Appointments

Inside the United States
In this section, we've looked at some practical aspects of life in the U.S. Our coverage, however, would be incomplete if
we didn't mention something about social habits and cultural codes in the U.S.
Perhaps you've asked yourself the question: what are Americans* really like? The answer is simple:it depends on the
American. To know what Americans are really like you have to begin by dealing with Americans as individuals. Then,
over a period of time, you'll probably notice certain things that those Americans, or at least some of them, have in
common. Your own individual experience is the best way for you to determine what Americans are really like.
In the follow subsections a few important points are covered, in order to help you to immunize from any cultural shock
during your visit to the States. They are meant as observations about certain forms of behaviour or social habits which are
share by many American individuals.
Food and Eating Etiquette
If you go to a fast-food restaurant, you'll notice that Americans almost always eat such things as pizza,
French Fries, or fried chicken with their hands. We may assume that Americans eat so many foods with
their hands because it's easier and because it is taken for granted that they usually wash up before
eating.
To some foreigners, however, eating with the hands may seem strange or perhaps unhygienic.
However, eating pizza with a fork and knife would seem strange to many Americans.
What about eating a sandwich? You'll notice that Americans almost always eat sandwiches
with their hands. If you decide to wrap the sandwich in a napkin to eat it, or if you try to eat it
with a knife and fork, you may get some curious looks from those around you.
*Americans (noun) = besides refering to any person from America (continent), it also means any citizen from the USA.

resposta é simples: depende do americano.
On Restaurants
Let's imagine that tonight you're going out to eat. You've chosen a restaurant like Denny's. Denny's is a famous
nationwide chain known for its simple, tasty and inexpensive meals.
At Denny's, as in most restaurants, you shouldn't just walk in and choose wherever you wish to sit down. A hostess¹ will
greet you as soon as you enter and then seat you.
After the hostess has seated you, the waiter/waitress² comes by and, as is customary in restaurants like that, he/she
serves you a glass of ice water. After giving you some time to study the menu, he/she'll ask you:
Can I take your order? / Are you ready to order yet?
Perhaps you still want some more time to study the menu. So you tell him/her:
Give me a few minutes more, please.
Finally, you order. In a short time, the waiter/waitress serves you the meal and with it, leaves the
check on the table.
At this moment, you may think with yourself that they left the check because you're supposed that you are to eat your
meal in a hurry and get out of the restaurant. Not at all. That is a customary procedure at places like Denny's. With the
check already on the table, the customer avoids the inconvenience of having to track down³ his/her waiter/waitress to get
it (the check) later.
You'll see that it's convenient for the customer because when you're ready to leave, you can just grab your check, walk up
to the cashier, and pay.
It goes without saying that you may enjoy your meal at leisure and if you wish to order anything else, like dessert, the
waiter/waitress will add that to your check.
¹hostess - A woman who receives or entertains guests in a social or official capacity.
²waiter/waitress - a man/woman who serves people with food and drink in a restaurant.
³track sb/sth down - to find sb/sth after searching in several different places.

Can I take your order? (Posso anotar seu pedido)
Are you ready to order yet?
Então você dirá a ele/ela:
Give me a few minutes more, please.
sair do restaurante.
On Bars
A typical american bar is a place where drinkers and non-drinkers alike come together to relax and enjoy themselves.
You'll find a bar for every taste, from the seediest¹ ones which you might want to think twice before entering, to swank²,
sophisticated pubs that cater to the jet set.
Many American bars often have a happy hour on weekdays which is intended to attract people just getting off work.
Happy hour is the time, usually between 5:00 and 7:00 pm, when bars offer certain beverages at special prices. Happy
hour is a habit for many people who like to unwind with a drink after work and do some socializing as well. You're sure to
find many bars full and bustling during happy hour.
Some bars also offer complementary snacks during happy hour such as chicken wings ,
celery sticks, popcorn or other munchies. The free snacks are usually located at a place
where you can go and help yourself.
Let's imagine that you too were going to meet some friends at Zeke's: Zeke's is a typical,
informal American bar which caters mainly to a middleclass clientele. You've arrived a little
after 5:00 and decide to have something to drink while you're waiting for your friends to
arrive.
To order, you walk up to the counter where the bartender is. You decide to order a beer. Most
bars usually draft beer at cheaper prices during their happy hour.
You have the choice of ordering either draft beer (the beer poured from a tap, something
referred to as simply draft) or bottled beer. You can order draft beer in a pitcher like the one
shown by the side:
Or you can order draft beer in a glass. Many American bars serve draft beer in glasses (like the one pictured below)
called mugs:
¹seedy - (adj.) (disapproving) dirty and unpleasant, possibly connected with immoral or illegal activities.
²swank - (adj.) Imposingly fashionable or elegant; grand./ Ostentatious; pretentious.

bares cheios e animados durante a "hora feliz".
You order beer by specifying the brand you want, so you might say to the person working the counter:
Give me/Could I have/I'll have a pitcher/glass/bottle of Coors/Bud/Michelob/etc., please.
Coors, Bud (short for Budweiser) and Michelob are just a few of the domestic brands of beers availabe. You'll also find a
large variety of imported brands like Heineken, Mohlson or Lowerbrau as well as the highly popular Mexican beers
like Corona or Carta Blanca, to name a few.
And another tip: it's customary to pay after every order, so if you wanted a beer, you'd pay the bartender right then and
there.
Here are some more tips: A good waiter/waitress will never give you the impression that he/she has forgotten you. It's
customary for him/her to stop by your table during the course of your meal and ask you:
Is everything all right here? / Can I get you anything else?
To which you might answer:
Everything is fine, thank you.
If, for any reason, you need to get something from your waiter/waitress, try to make eye contact or wave to him/her.
Remember, hissing or shouting is considered impolite.
Tipping and toothpicks
You've just finished your meal at Denny 's. The food and service were both good. You look at the check. While sales
tax¹ is included, you'll notice that the tip isn't. The reason for this is simple: it's up to you to decide if the service and
quality of the food merit a tip.
If the service was good, it's customary to leave a tip of between 10% to 15% of the
total. However, if for any reason you're dissatisfied with the food and service, you don't
have to leave a tip.
Just remember that before you leaving, don't add the tip on the total when you pay the
bill, but leave the tip on the table for the waiter/waitress.
And here is something else you might like to know. If after your meal you want a
toothpick, you won't find any toothpick dispensers on the table. You can get toothpicks
at the cashier's desk.
¹ sales tax - (in some countries) the part of the price you pay when you buy something that goes to the government as
tax.

Você pede a cerveja especificando qual marca que você quer, então você dirá à pessoa que atende no balcão:
Give me/Could I have/I'll have a pitcher/glass/bottle of Coors/Bud/Michelob/etc., please.
Is everything all right here? (Está tudo bem por aqui?)
Can I get you anything else? (Deseja mais alguma coisa?)
Para o qual você pode responder:
Everything is fine, thank you.
Você confere a
conta.
Etiquette and Behavior in the USA
Every country has different everyday ways. To get to know Americans, it pays to know certain mannerisms and habits
most Americans share.
Greetings
Americans shake hands firmly with each other when first introduced, or when they meet again,
but rarely when they part (a more European custom). Social kissing, as a greeting, is also
sometimes acceptable between men and women who know each other well and between
women. American men rarely embrace each other or kiss on both cheeks.
Distance and Eye Contact
When two Americans are standing and talking to each other they stay at least 16 inches away from each other, yet they
do make eye contact.
Introductions
If you meet someone you know on the street while you are with someone else, it is polite to introduce the people to each
other.
Foreign Languages
If you are with a group of mainly English-speaking people and the conversation is going on in English, it is not polite to
speak in your own or another foreign language for more than a few sentences. Whatever language you speak in, try to
avoid swear words. Of course, you should avoid “dirty,” “off-color,” or sexually explicit stories or jokes.
If you are in a movie theater or at a concert or play, it is never polite to talk during the
performance, even in a whisper.
Formal and Informal Dressing
For some people and in some regions, “informal” means blue jeans and T-shirts. For some others, it can mean sports
jackets and ties. It pays to ask specific questions about how you should dress when someone invites you (“Do I need to
wear a dress? jacket and tie?”). The phrase “formal” (also referred to as “Black Tie”) means tuxedos for men and evening
dresses for women.

Driving in the USA
Renting a car:
Drivers must be over 21 years of age to rent a car and should present a translation of a national driver's license in
English, or an international Driver's License.
Rental agencies prefer payment with a major credit card. If you don't have one, they will require a large cash deposit.
Very often cash will be refused at night and on weekends. This will also occur at gas stations. However, dollar travelers
checks* are accepted across the United States, and change will be given in cash.
On the road:
Traffic drives on the right. In some states (e.g. California and Florida) you are allowed to turn
right after stopping at a red light, but only if the road is clear. You must park in the direction of
the moving traffic.
Highways:
There are strict speed limits on the highways which must be obeyed. In some states the
maximum speed limit on rural interstates** is 65 m.p.h (105 km/h). As a result, driving is
relaxing and pleasant. Most American drivers keep to the speed limit.
Tailgating (drive dangerously close to the car in front) is an offence.

do fluxo do trânsito.
Rodovias:
² Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways,
projeto. O sistema engloba, segundo dados de 2004, 75.376 quilômetros de rodovias
espalhadas em 48 estados norte-americanos. Trata-se da maior rede de rodovias
públicas do mundo.
Punctuality
Myth has it that Americans have a very rigid sense of time and that they frown upon lack of
punctuality of any kind. While it's true that puncutuality is an important value in American
society, it should be also remembered thatpunctuality is determined by the occasion.
You'de be expected to be punctual if you had a business or doctor's appointment, or if you'd
arranged to meet someone somewhere.
If someone invited you to his/her house for dinner at 8:00, for example, that wouldn't mean that you'd have to arrive
before 8:00 or at 8:00 sharp. Your host probably wouldn't be offended if you arrive at 8:15 or perhaps even at 8:20.
However, since the occasion is dinner, which means that the meal has to be planned and timed, arriving much later would
probably be interpreted as a lack of respect or appreciation of your host's hospitality.
Now let's consider another situation. Imagine someone invites you to a party and tells you it's going to start at around
8:00. If you arrived at 8:00 or even 8:15, chances are you'd be one of the first people at the party. Since the occasion is
informal, you could arrive at the party later.
And here's one final point. When in doubt, be punctual: it'll certainly save you from possible embarrassing situations.
And don't be afraid to ask questions about exactly what time you're expected to show up some place.
During your stay in the United States, you'll probably notice many other social habits or cultural codes. Being open to
different ideas can only benefit you and add to your undestanding of Americans. And, as a student of a foreign
culture, it can also help you realize the importance of recognizing and respecting diversity in such a complex society as
that of the United States.
[Tradução do texto acima]
Pontualidade
Social Interaction
During your stay, watch how many Americans interact socially with each other. You'll probably notice that many of
them have a strong concept of what constitutes their personal space. in other words, they don't want another
person to get too close to them (unless of course they are romantically involved). It's not an exaggeration to say that
some Americans may actually feel unconfortable by someone being too close or by someone (even a friend) touching
them.
You may also find that the occasions in which embracing, hugging, kissing and
touching become acceptable are different in the U.S. In some cultures, when two men
talk to each other, they stand very close together. the opposite tends to be true in
American culture where men will maintain a distance of about two or four feet. In
fact, this is one of the reasons why handshaking is popular among American
men when thay greet each other. Shaking hands helps them establish their own
personal space.
Althogh handshaking is a common part of an introduction or greeting, it may not always be present. For example, you
may find yourself in a situation in which you meet someone for the first time, but he/she doesn't shake your hand. Instead
he/she only acknowledges your presence with a smile and a nod. Don't think that he/she doesn't like you. Quite the
contrary, that person just has a different way ofshowing respect and affection or of being friendly.
Another important point is the concept of privacy. A person who likes to spend a lot of time by himself is not necessarily
viewed as a misanthrope by many Americans. The idea of having "time for oneself" is important to many
Americans. It's common for one person to say to another: "I just want to be alone." Such a statement does not
necessarily imply that one person doesn't like the other. Nor does it imply that someone is being rejected.
[Tradução do texto acima]
O contrário tende a
cumprimentam.
*misantropo = que ou aquele que prefere a solidão, não tem vida social, não gosta da convivência com outras pessoas;
eremita, ermitão, solitário.

Inside Great Britain
Britain is the birthplace of Newton, Darwin, Shakespeare and the Beatles; home of one of the world's largest foreign
exchange market, one of the world's richest football clubs - Manchester United, the inventor of the hovercraft and the JK
Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books. From Scotland to Cornwall, Britain is full of traditions and customs. A lot of
them have very long histories. Some are funny and some are strange. But they're all interesting and are all part of the
British way of life. Throughout this section of our website you will have the chance to discover many of our customs and
traditions.
The people of Great Britain today - who are the british?
British people live in the England (the English), Scotland (the Scottish), Wales (the Welsh) or Northern Ireland (the Irish).
The British are said to be reserved in manners, dress and speech. They are famous for their politeness, self-discipline
and especially for their sense of humour. British people have a strong sense of humour which sometimes can be hard for
foreigners to understand (see, for example, Jokes in English - British Humour).
Britain is a island of mixed cultures. London has the largest non-white population of any European city and over 250
languages are spoken there.

A handshake is the most common form of greeting among the British people and is customary when you are introduced to
somebody new.
The Kiss:
It is only when you meet friends, whom you haven't seen for a long time, that you would kiss the
cheek of the opposite sex. In Britain one kiss is generally enough.
Formal Greetings:
The usual formal greeting is a 'How do you do?' and a firm handshake, but with a lighter touch
between men and women.
‘How do you do?’ is a greeting not a question and the correct response is to repeat ‘How do
you do?' You say this when shaking hands with someone:
A: "How do you do?"
B:" How do you do?"
'How are you?' is a question and the most common and polite response is "I am fine, thank you,
and you?"

Londres possui
a maior população não-branca dentre qualquer cidade européia,
homens e mulheres.
"How do you do?" é um cumprimento, uma forma de dizer oi, e não uma pergunta, e a resposta correta á "How do you
do?".
A: "How do you do?"
B:" How do you do?"
"How are you?"
responder é "I am fine, thank you, and you?" (Estou bem, obrigado, e você?).
Eating Etiquette - What should I do or not do when I am eating in Britain?
The British generally pay a lot of attention to good table manners. Even young children are expected to eat properly with
knife and fork. They eat most of their food with cutlery. The foods they don't eat with a knife, fork or spoon include
sandwiches, crisps, corn on the cob and fruits.
The British eat continental style, with fork in the left hand and the knife in the right (or the other way round if the you are
left handed). At the top of your plate will be a dessert spoon and dessert fork.
If you are eating at a formal dinner party, you will come across many knives and forks. Start with the utensils on the
outside and work your way inward with each subsequent course.

pequenas comam adequadamente usando garfo e faca.
canhoto/a).
Things you should do: (Coisas que você deve fazer:)
- If you cannot eat a certain type of food or have some special needs, tell your host several
days before the dinner party.
- If you are a guest, it is polite to wait until your host starts eating or indicates you should
do so. It shows consideration.
- Always chew and swallow all the food in your mouth before taking more or taking a
drink.
- You may eat chicken and pizza with your fingers if you are at a barbecue, finger buffet or
very informal setting. Otherwise always use a knife and fork.[Você pode comer frango e
Caso contrário, sempre utilize garfo e faca.]¹
- Always say thank you when served something. It shows appreciation.(Sempre agradeça
quando for servido por alguém. Isso demonstra apreço.)
- When eating rolls, break off a piece of bread before buttering. Eating it whole looks
tacky.
demonstra desleixo.)
- On formal dining occasions it is good manners to take some butter from the butter dish
with your bread knife and put it on your side plate (for the roll). Then butter pieces of the
roll using this butter. This prevents the butter in the dish getting full of bread crumbs as it is
passed around.
- When you have finished eating, and to let others know that you have,
place your knife and fork together, with the prongs (tines) on the fork facing upwards, on
your plate.
- In a restaurant, it is normal to pay for your food by putting your money on the plate the bill
comes on.
Things you should not do: (Coisas que você não deve fazer:)
- Never lick or put your knife in your mouth. (Nunca lamba ou coloque sua faca na
boca.)
- It is impolite to start eating before everyone has been served unless your host says
that you don't need to wait.
esperar.)
- Never chew with your mouth open. No one wants to see food being chewed or
hearing it being chomped on. (Nunca mastigue de boca aberta. Ninguém gosta de
ver ou ouvir comida sendo mastigada.)
- It is impolite to have your elbows on the table while you are eating.
- Don't reach over someone's plate for something, ask for the item to be
passed.
- Never talk with food in your mouth. (Nunca fale de boca cheia.)
- It is impolite to put too much food in your mouth. (É falta de educação colocar
muita comida na boca.)
- Never use your fingers to push food onto your spoon or fork.
- It is impolite to slurp your food or eat noisily. (É falta de educação beber ou comer
fazendo barulho.)
- Never blow your nose on a napkin (serviette). Napkins are for dabbing your lips
and only for that. (Nunca assoe o nariz no guardanapo.
- Never take food from your neighbours plate. (Nunca pegue comida do prato do
vizinho.)
- Never pick food out of your teeth with your fingernails. (Nunca tire comida dos
dentes com as unhas.)
Social Customs
British Punctuality:
British people place considerable value on punctuality. If you agree to meet friends at three o'clock, you can bet that
they'll be there just after three. Since Britons are so time conscious, the pace of life may seem very rushed. In Britain,
people make great effort to arrive on time. It is often considered impolite to arrive even a few minutes late. If you are
unable to keep an appointment, it is expected that you call the person you are meeting. Some general tips follow:
You should arrive:
- At the exact time specified – for dinner, lunch, or appointments with professors,
doctors and other professionals.
- Any time during the hours specified for teas, receptions and cocktail parties.
- A few minutes early: for public meetings, plays, concerts, movies, sporting events,
classes, church services and weddings.
If you are invited to someone's house for dinner at half past seven, they will expect
you to be there on the dot. An invitation might state "7.30 for 8", in which case you
should arrive no later than 7.50. However, if an invitation says "sharp", you must
arrive in plenty of time.
Invitations:
“Drop in anytime” and “come see me soon” are idioms often used in social settings but seldom meant to be taken literally.
It is wise to telephone before visiting someone at home. If you receive a written invitation to an event that says “RSVP”,
you should respond to let the person who sent the invitation know whether or not you plan to attend.
Never accept an invitation unless you really plan to go. You may refuse by saying, “Thank you for inviting me, but I will
not be able to come.” If, after accepting, you are unable to attend, be sure to tell those expecting you as far in advance
as possible that you will not be there.
Although it is not necessarily expected that you give a gift to your host, it is considered
polite to do so, especially if you have been invited for a meal. Flowers, chocolate or a
small gift are all appropriate. A thank-you note or telephone call after the visit is also
considered polite and is an appropriate means to express your appreciation for the
invitation.
Dress:
Everyday dress is appropriate for most visits to peoples' homes. You may want to dress
more formally when attending a holiday dinner or cultural event, such as a concert or
theatre performance.

Costumes Sociais
Você pode recusá-lo dizendo “Thank you for inviting
me, but I will not be able to come.”
Etiquette and manners
Acceptable Behaviour in England:
The British are said to be reserved in manners, dress and speech. They are famous for their politeness, self-discipline
and especially for their sense of humour. Basic politeness (please, thank you, excuse me) is expected.
Terms of Endearment - Names the british may call you:
You may be called by many different 'affectionate' names, according to which part of the Britain you are visiting. Do not be
offended, this is quite normal. For example, you may be called dear, dearie, flower, love, chick, chuck, me duck, me
duckie, mate, guv, son, ma'am, madam, miss, sir, or treacle, according to your sex, age and location.
Manners are Important!- DOs and DON'TS (Taboos) in England
Dos - In England...
Do stand in line: In England people like to form orderly queues (standing in line) and
wait patiently for their turn (e.g. boarding a bus). It is usual to queue when required, and
expected that you will take your correct turn and not push in front. 'Queue jumping' is
frowned upon.
Do take your hat off when you go indoors (men only): It is impolite for men to wear hats indoors especially in churches.
Nowadays, it is becoming more common to see men wearing hats indoors. However, this is still seen as being impolite,
especially to the older generations.
Do say "Excuse Me": If someone is blocking your way and you would like them to move, say excuse me and they will
move out of your way.
Do say "Please" and "Thank you": It is very good manners to say "please" and "thank you". It is considered rude if you
don't. You will notice in England that people say 'thank you' a lot.
Do cover your mouth: When yawning or coughing always cover your mouth with your hand.
Do shakehands: When you are first introduced to someone, shake their right hand with your own right hand.
Do say sorry: If you accidentally bump into someone, say 'sorry'. They probably will too, even if it was your fault! This is
a habit and can be seen as very amusing by an 'outsider'.
Do Smile: A smiling face is a welcoming face.
Do open doors for other people: Men and women both hold open the door for each other. It depends
on who goes through the door first.
Dont's - In England...
Do not greet people with a kiss: They only kiss people who are close friends and relatives.
Avoid talking loudly in public.
Do not ask a lady her age: It is considered impolite to ask a lady her age
Do not pick your nose in public: British are disgusted by this. If your nostrils need de-bugging, use a handkerchief.
Avoid doing gestures such as backslapping and hugging: This is only done among close friends.

Etiqueta e modos
Furar a fila é mal visto.
Public Houses (pubs)
What is a pub?
The word pub is short for public house. There are over 60,000 pubs in the
United Kingdom (53,000 in England and Wales, 5,200 in Scotland and 1,600
in Northern Ireland). One of the oldest pubs,Fighting Cocks in St. Albans,
Herts, is located in a building that dates back to the eleventh century.
Pubs are popular social meeting places:
Pubs are an important part of British life. People talk, eat, drink, meet their
friends and relax there.
Pubs often have two bars, one usually quieter than the other, many have a
garden where people can sit in the summer. Children can go in pub gardens
with their parents.
Groups of friends normally buy 'rounds' of drinks, where the person whose
turn it is will buy drinks for all the members of the group. It is sometimes
difficult to get served when pubs are busy: people do not queue, but the bar
staff will usually try to serve those who have been waiting the longest at the
bar. If you spill a stranger's drink by accident, it is good manners (and prudent)
to offer to buy another drink.
Customs:
Customs in British pubs differ from those in American bars. In Britain, you must go to the bar to order drinks and food and
pay for your purchase immediately, there is no table service. Bartenders are called "landlords" and "barmaids" and they
do not expect frequent tipping. To tip a landlord or barmaid, it is customary to tell him to "would you like a drink
yourself?"
Licensing Laws:
The legal age to purchase alcohol is 18. People aged 16 and 17, with the licensee's permission, may consume only 1
glass of wine, beer or cider with a table meal in specific areas of the premises, providing they're with an adult and the
adult orders it (England & Wales only, Scotland no adult required to be present).
It is illegal to sell alcohol to someone who already appears drunk. You may not buy alcohol for a drunk person on licensed
premises. All off-sales* are advised to ask for photographic ID if the person looks under 21. Purchasing alcohol on behalf
of a minor will result in an £80 on-the-spot fine.
Fourteen-year-olds may enter a pub unaccompanied by an adult if they order a meal. Children may enter a pub with their
parents until 9 p.m., which lets families enjoy reasonably priced pub meals together, and allows pubs to continue in their
traditional roles as community centers.

amigos e relaxam.
esperando no bar.
perguntando "would you like a drink yourself?"
British Beer:
Most pubs belong to a brewery (a company which makes beer) but sell many different kinds of beer, some on tap (from a
big container under the bar) and some in bottles. The most popular kind of British beer is bitter, which is dark and served
at room temperature (not hot, not cold). British beer is brewed from malt and hops.
More popular today though is Lager, which is lighter in colour and served cold. Guinness, a very dark, creamy kind of
beer called a stout, is made in Ireland and is popular all over Britain.
In the West of England, cider made from apples, is very popular. Like wine, it is described as sweet or dry, but is drunk in
beer glasses and can be stronger than beer.
Beers are served in "pints"¹ for a large glass and "halves"² for a smaller one.
Other Beers served:
Most pubs offer a complete range of beers, local and imported, with German, Belgian and French beers being in demand.
Pubs sell soft drinks as well as alcohol:
Although most people think pubs are places where people drink alcohol, pubs in fact sell soft drinks (non alcoholic) drinks
too.
Pub Food:
Nearly all pubs sell pub lunches. One of these is the Ploughman's Lunch which is a great wedge of Cheddar cheese,
some bread, some pickle, and an onion. Other typical pub foods are scampi ³ (kind and chips (fried potatoes), pie and
chips, and chicken and chips.
Pub Names
Pubs have traditional names which date back over 600 years. Some
typical names are The Chequers, The White Swan, The Crown, The
King's Arms, The Red Lion and The White Horse. People often refer
to the pub by its name when giving directions: turn left at the Rose
and Crown. There is usually a sign outside the pub showing the
pub's name with a picture.
Vocabulary:
¹ pint = a unit for measuring liquids, one-eighth of a gallon (in Britain, 0.57 litre; in the United States, 0.47 litre) a pint of
milk/beer. Quartilho.
² half = half a pint, especially of beer (metade)
³ Scampi = a culinary term that is alternately used for a species of lobster or a method of preparing seafood.

Driving in Great Britain
In Britain, people drive on the left-hand side of the road, so the steering wheel is on the right. However the pedals are
in the same position as in left-handed cars, with the accelerator (gas pedal) on the right. The gears and almost always the
handbrake (parking brake) is operated with the left hand. Most cars in Britain are manual cars i.e have a gear stick.
The minimum age for driving
a car in the UK is 17.
Roads:
There are some 225,000 miles (362,000 km) of roads in Britain. Many of the roads are built on
the old roads laid down by the Romans centuries ago.
Roads in Britain range from wide modern motorways down to narrow country lanes usually
bordered by hedges, stone walls, grassy banks or ditches. Cities and towns tend to have
compact streets because they date back to well before cars were invented, and were certainly
not planned for large lorries (trucks).
In Britain, the three main roads are "M" roads, "A" roads, and "B" roads:
- "M" roads are like American freeways. They are known as motorways and are fast roads.
They have three or four lanes.
- "A" roads are not controlled-access*: they range from two-lane divided highways ("dual carraigeways") down to one-lane
roads. They are the main routes between towns.
- "B" roads are the smaller of the three. They may be in the open or have impenetrable foliage right up to the road. Road
markings (curves, etc.) may be sparse.
*A limited-access road or controlled-access road is a road to which access
from adjacent properties is limited in some way. It can mean anything from a
city street to which the maintaining authority limits driveway access to a
freeway (or other equivalent terms). The precise definition of these terms
varies by jurisdiction. Often, on these kinds of road low-speed vehicles and
non-motorized uses including pedestrians, bicycles, and horses, are not
permitted.

Estradas:
