Job Description: Gear Testing
Topic Description:
Experimental safeguarding of gear designs
in terms of load carrying capacity, excitation
behaviour and efficiency is obligatory for
most cases of transmissions developing.
The work developed in the area of gear
testing is focused on the application and
optimization of testing methods.
Besides the key aspect of analysing the
influence of manufacturing-related
properties on the running behaviour, the
determined values are used to validate
calculation models for load carrying
capacity and excitation behaviour.
In order to meet future requirements,
existing testing concepts of load carrying
capacity and acoustics are continuously
developed.
With this opportunity, the student will be
able to not only gain an insight into the work
as an engineer but also gain
comprehensive knowledge in the field of
gear testing. The possibility of the
development of bachelor thesis is also
given, in experimental and simulative fields.
Data de início: 16.01.2019
Requirements:
- Good knowledge in English
- Good team work and communication skills
- Motivation and commitment
- Enjoy experimental work

Topic
For modern power transmissions,
gear mesh excitations are of great in-
terest and significantly influence the
excitation behavior of the overall sys-
tem through interactions with shafts
and bearings.
On the other hand, the transmission
ratio increases due to the higher
speed of electric motors in the auto-
motive sector. This means that plane-
tary gearboxes are used more often.
An increase in power density leads to
higher elastic deformations in opera-
tion due to the higher transmitted
power while the gear concept and the
dynamic misalignment of transmission
components on the system behavior
must be simulated at an early stage of
development. In the field of dynamic
system simulation, multi body simula-
tion (MBS) is of great importance.
Existing dynamic simulation methods
usually describe the tooth contact on
the basis of analytical equations or
consider only the degree of rotational
freedom, which leads to uncertainties
in the simulation results. Misalign-
ments are therefore either simplified
or not taken into account.
In the context of this topic simulation
models will be built. The results will be
compared with test bench investiga-
tions and the simulation method will
be validated. In addition, further de-
velopments of the method will be
driven forward.
Requirements:
- Fluent in English
- Motivation and commitment
- Studies in mechanical engineering,
CES or computer science
- Interest in programming work
- First experiences in MBS welcome
- Team skills
We offer:
– Free and independent work with a
good working atmosphere in a
highly motivated team
– Worldwide contact to a large num-
ber of companies
– Intensive support and training in the
area of subject
– Possibility to write a Bachelor the-
sis

The group 'Gear Manufacturing Tech-nology' deals with the manufacturing processes for the manufacture of gears as well as with application-spe-cific design. Innovative processes, process optimization and improved calculation methods enable gears to be manufactured more efficiently and with less use of resources.
We offer
▪ good working atmosphere
▪ modern machines
▪ contact to a large number of compa-nies
▪ excursions and team-building activities
We work very closely with well-known companies in the field of gear and transmission technology. These in-clude the automotive industry as well as manufacturers of gear cutting ma-chines and tools as well as manufac-turers of wind turbines.
Requirements
▪ fluent in English
▪ motivation and commitment
▪ independency and responsibility
▪ interest in to experimental work
▪ team player
The majority of the projects take place in cooperation with the industry.
