ENGLISH FOR IT PROFESSIONALS
Introduction
Information technology is a majorinfluence in most of our lives, at work and athome. There are many different careers incomputing.
There are so many business andindustrial applications for computers andmicrocomputers, it is almost impossible toimagine a world without them. Computershave become smaller, cheaper, morepowerful and more sophisticated. At thesame time, a major revolution is takingplace in communications (telephone
signals, TV transmissions, etc.).Telephone networks in all major countriesare being converted to digital signals.Because these networks use the sameinformation patterns as computers, thepossibilities opened up are almostunimaginable! Computers are used inschools, offices, factories, shops, hospitals, banks, farms, the City - every
kind of working environment. Many of usfind ourselves having to work withcomputers whether we want to or not!

8The CPU controls how fast the computer processes data , or information. We measure its9 10speed in megahertz (MHz) orgigahertz (GHz) .
11 12We measure the Random Access Memory (RAM) of the computer in megabytes (MB) .
The RAM controls the performance of the computer when it is working and moves data to and13 14from the CPU. Programs with a lot of graphics need a large RAM to run well.

2. The Internet
The Internet is a global system of1interconnected computer networks that use
the standard Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP)to serve billions of users worldwide. It is a
network of networks that consists of millions ofprivate and public, academic, business, andgovernment networks of local to global scopethat are linked by a broad array of electronicand optical networking technologies. The
2Internet carries a vast array of informationresources and services, most notably the
3inter-linked hypertext documents of theWor ld Wide Web (WWW) and the
4infrastructure to support electronic mail .
Most traditional communications media, such as telephone and television services, arereshaped or redefined using the technologiesof the Internet, giving rise to services such asVoice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and IPTV.Newspaper publishing has been reshaped
5 6 7into websites , blogging , and web feeds .The Internet has enabled or accelerated thecreation of new forms of human interactions
8through instant messaging , Internet9 10forums , and socialnetworking sites .
The origins of the Internet reach back to the1960s when the United States fundedresearch projects of its military agencies tobuild robust, fault-tolerant and distributedcomputer networks. This research and aperiod of civilian funding of a new U.S.backbone by the National Science Foundationspawned worldwide participation in thedevelopment of new networking technologiesand led to the commercialization of aninternational network in the mid 1990s, and
resulted in the following popularization ofcountless applications in virtually every aspectof modern human life. As of 2009, anestimated quarter of Earth's population uses
the services of the Internet. The Internet has no centralized governance
in either technological implementation orpolicies for access and usage; each
11constituent network sets its own standards .Only the overreaching definitions of the twoprincipal name spaces in the Internet, the
12Internet Protocol address space and the13Domain Name System , are directed by a
maintainer organization, the Internet
Corporation for Assigned Names andN u m b e r s ( I C A N N ) . T h e t e c h n i c a lunderpinning and standardization of the coreprotocols (IPv4 and IPv6) is an activity of theInternet Engineering Task Force (IETF), anon-profit organization of loosely-affiliatedinternational participants thatanyone may associate with byc o n t r i b u t i n g t e c h n i c a lexpertise.

An Internet email addresshas a user name, the atsymbol (@), and a domain name. The user name is the name you choose. The domain has two parts separated by a dot (.). Thefirst part is the network that receives the email and the second is the top-level domain (TLD),which shows the type of organization, such as commercial (.com) or educational (.edu).
Sometimes the TLD is a country code, such as .cz (Czech Republic).
To use email aclient computerneeds an email program to connect to a networkserver. The program can be stand-alone, e.g. Outlook Express, or Web-based, e.g. Yahoo!.Stand-aloneprograms let you compose email offline, but with Web-basedprograms youmust beonline.
Email uses two kinds of mail servers: an SMTP server, which deals with outgoingemailand a POP3 server, which deals with incomingemail. SMTP stands for Simple Mail TransferProtocol; POP stands for Post Office Protocol.
If you sendan email to a friend in the same domain as you, your SMTP server simply
sends it to the POP3 server in your domain, which adds it to your friends inbox. If your friendhas a different domain name, your SMTP server finds your friends SMTP server using aDomain Name Service (DNS). When your friends SMTP server receivesthe email, it sendsyour email to its POP3 server, which adds it to your friends inbox.
